I’ve never rated Tigers list: ShawJAY CLARK
Herald Sun
30 July 2016COLLINGWOOD premiership captain Tony Shaw says Richmond must launch into a total rebuild of its patchy list.
In one of the most forthright assessments of the Tigers’ position amid a failed season, Shaw said Richmond must start over and “regenerate their list”.
Shaw said Richmond’s squad was full of players “who are just goers”.
“They have got to start again now,” Shaw said.
“It’s cruel, but they have got to go.”
After three consecutive finals appearances, Richmond has gone backwards this season with only seven wins, tied with Collingwood.
They are four wins outside the eight.
Shaw spared coach Damien Hardwick criticism, declaring the coach’s position should be safe for next season.
Shaw said the list was the key problem at Punt Rd, with the club set to pump more money into its recruiting department to correct some talent identification shortfalls.
“I think this man (Hardwick) has done a fairly good job,” Shaw said on 3AW.
“I have never rated their list to a level that a lot of other people have.
“I think he had got a lot out of a lot of players who are just goers.
“They played for him and that’s all coaches want.
“They really have got to regenerate their list again now.”
Hardwick has said this year the list was the best it’s been in his tenure as Tigers’ coach. He is contracted until the end of 2018.
Free agent Tyrone Vickery and No.6 draft pick Reece Conca face uncertain futures while stars Brett Deledio and Alex Rance would only be moved on if they attracted a spectacular trade offering.
Another first-round pick, Brandon Ellis has also stagnated this year.
Despite averaging 23 possessions a game in 17 matches this season, he is ranked 218th in the AFL’s official player ratings, formulated by Champion Data.
Brisbane champion Jonathan Brown said in his exclusive Herald Sun column today that Vickery, Conca and Ellis “should be traded to help the Tigers back into the early rounds of the draft”.
