A bit rich, Dick!
You may have seen the television commercial but even if you have, we’re tipping you didn’t recognise the bloke in it. Thirty years ago you would have, though because in those days he was one of the biggest names in football. The clue is at the bottom of the Bunnings Warehouse ad – “Richard – ex-footballer”. It is of course Dick Clay, Richmond’s four times premiership player of the 1960s and ‘70s who, along with Billy Barrott [sic – wish reporters would do their research grrr] and Francis Bourke, formed the most famous footy centre line of all time. Anyway, Clay, now 60, is living a much quieter existence and for the past 12 months has been selling such items as water hoses at Bunnings’ Nunawading store. He was, however, chosen for the ad not because he is a famous name (the people making the advertisement didn’t make the connection) but was one of several employees who presented well on camera. Oh well, so much for his anonymity.
