Damien Hardwick will have to be paid out $1 million if Richmond decides to sack him

MICHAEL WARNER
Herald Sun
August 2, 2016

SACKING Damien Hardwick would cost Richmond at least $1 million.

Hardwick’s contract, extended for two more years in March, does not include get out clauses.

If the club chose to move on the seven-year coach it would be forced to pay out close to the full value of his contract.

Hardwick earns about $600,000 a season.

At least two Richmond assistant coaches were on Monday told their positions could not be guaranteed next year.

The Tigers are conducting a sweeping review of the club’s entire operation in the wake of a disastrous seven-win season.

Accountancy firm Ernst & Young is helping lead the audit.

Club director Rod Dalton is a senior partner at Ernst & Young but the club’s board is facing calls for its own major overhaul.

The Tigers honoured a commitment by all clubs for assistant coaches to be made aware of their contract status for next season by August 1.

It allows the game’s 180 assistant coaches time to seek opportunity elsewhere.

Richmond’s recruiting and list management departments are also being scrutinised, while up to 16 players remain uncontracted.

Tigers chief executive Brendon Gale declared on Sunday that Hardwick, 43, would coach in 2017.

Richmond skipper Trent Cotchin said Hardwick had a great relationship with the players.

“Absolutely, there is no question about that and there never will be,” Cotchin said.

“To be honest from a personal point of view I couldn’t care less what people are talking about outside of our four walls.

“Obviously, it wasn’t that good on the weekend ... there’s obviously a lot of work for us to do.

“The challenge for us is that we still have four weeks of the season to turn it around.

“Dimma is a fantastic person and he will wear most of it on his shoulders because that’s the kind of person he is. But the reality is we need to be better as a playing group.”

Richmond plays Collingwood, Geelong, St Kilda and Sydney in the last four rounds.

You're done too Trent. Stop spinning rubbish, stop your mrs on social media, stop the stupid sledging when game isn't one, stop going missing in finals when it matters.

  • Too weird to live, and too rare to die.
Just when you think it can't get any worse, $600,000 for this garbage?
WTF signed off on that?

1 mill is money well spent all things considered.

FTF should still have bit left surely.
The possibility of physical and mental collapse is now very real. No sympathy for the Devil, keep that in mind. Buy the ticket, take the ride.

That's nice, an accounting audit. That makes me feel better.

It will be the best 1 million dollars we should never have had to spend. Thanks Peggy, Brendan and Dan..  However, this money needs to be spent. Why? Because the supporters know Damien is no good and aren't buying the RFC spin anymore. If the club thinks the supporters will back it up again with 70k in members they are terribly wrong. So if we don't spend the 1 million dollars to get rid of him then the club will possibly lose 2 mil in membership and attendance.

If this club started to journey map the average Richmond supporters right now they would discover we are all about done!!!

The club will keep him and any lost membership they will fudge 3 game membership figures to ease the chaos.

Well WP, are you ready to apologise?

Lol the right track.

Surely they are smart enough to put a clause in to a proven finals failure  coach about performance.

Details for the members please.

Seriously, Dooks are you that naive to think they haven't?

I get that it doesn't suit a purpose to assume they haven't but it is more likely than unlikely that they have got performance clauses. Actually I'd back it in

And do you really think a board is going to tell us the full details of an employment contract? No board is going to do that and nor should they

I don't  agree with the extension don't believe it was necessary, certainly not 2 years but give them a little bit of credit that all "i"s are dotted and "t"s are crossed

And before anyone suggest i accept mediocrity, i don't. But a decisions been made, let the games begin

You don't know any of that. Are you that naive to think they have?

You'd back it in others wouldn't.  The club has a history (recent) of stunning decisions,  you can give them the benefit of the doubt. Not me.

A decision has been made let's 'all move on'. Yeah.

You don't accept mediocrity but you put yourself in a certain perceived position by being indirect and certainly posting in that direction. At minimum an each way bet is the view of a confused fan.

Been waiting for this  :lol

If the article is correct then yep I was wrong. For now I will take the article on face value; so I got it wrong

And it becomes a bigger millstone than the actually extension. Would have expected there would be a payout if he was sacked but can't believe (if the article is correct) that they didn't have a anything
