Prestia to miss Suns clash

By Richmond Media
27 April 2023

Richmond midfielder Dion Prestia will not play in Sunday’s match against Gold Coast at Marvel Stadium.

The 30-year-old will miss the game through management as the Tigers prepare for consecutive six-day breaks.

Richmond High-Performance Manager Luke Meehan said Prestia had reported soreness this week.

“Dion has been fantastic this year with his ability to present himself to play. However, given his history and the upcoming short turnarounds, we think the right decision is for him to miss Sunday’s game,” he said.

“Our indicators suggest that pushing him too far could result in us losing him for longer, so we are taking this necessary approach.”

At a recent media conference, Prestia said that his body may need rest in the coming weeks.

“It has been a pretty full-on season already, having two travels and probably going off my history and having six-day breaks- I think it is pretty smart to have a rest,” he explained.

“I think it is a smart idea to do that.”

Felt like he was just starting to get a bit of touch back and we rest him. Oh well.

He’s been as useful as a chocolate frypan this season so won’t be missed

Doesn’t like right to me.
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

The Richmond coach said star midfielder Dion Prestia would have a “welcome rest” this weekend, revealing the 30-year-old has been playing under duress following a pectoral strain on the eve of the season and a series of heavy knocks during games.

“He’s been really brave and being completely honest, he’s been playing hurt for quite some time, but we just haven’t had the numbers on the park,” Hardwick said.

“So he’s put his hand up to play and we could have quite easily not played him two or three times, but he wanted to put his hand up.

“We could push him this week, but we’d rather just take the one week … it’s a risk we’re willing to take instead of losing him for three or four.”

If he’s been hurt then play martin or Bolton in the middle? Why is he only being rested now?

Three 6 day breaks in a row is the reason given.

Maybe I'm missing something but if Prestia has been sore for a few games then why didn't rest him last week in a game we were unlikely to win (and lost anyway) and have him right for the more winnable game this week. Let's hope it doesn't backfire like it did when we stupidly 'rested' Jack against the Dogs rather than versus the Pies and lost both games :P.

If it was me:
Dees - rested Prestia
Suns - play
Eagles - play
Geel - rest (3rd six break in a row)
Ess - play
Port @ G - play
GWS - play

Focus on playing the best available team in the winnable games and we'd be 5-1-5 by the midpoint of the season and our season still alive with the troops returning.

I think the off field management of the team has been poor for a couple of seasons.
The mantra from Dimma was “take the stairs” but we have barely climbed any floors  :lol

it says a lot about all our off field departments I mean who has a player playing half banged up, especially one that is doing nothing when he plays. What kind of amaeturs are running the conditioning department letting players override them?

It also says a lot about Dimma and co and how they view guys like Ross. They would rather a banged up Prestia than a fully fit ross. On prestias numbers i would say ross would have made more impact this year, and thats saying something considering my thoughts on Ross.

I hate this resting stuff. This is done and is fine when you are top 4. Not when you are 1-1-4.

Massive? Not so sure. Prestia hasn't exactly been setting the world on fire.

Agree with others. In seasons past he would have been a massive massive loss. His form this season has been avg to say the least and he has plenty of company in that respect.

If we’re not good enough to beat the suns without him they we wouldn’t be good enough to beat them with him.
