McGuane may be heading to the Saints

According to the Pies forum extreme B&W, Micky McGuane could be favourite to take over vacant assistant coach position at the Saints.:

I heard last night that he is favourite to get the gig ,they have interviewed 20 blokes and mcguane interviewed best they said.

It may be utter garbage but it's not the first time I've heard this despite Martin Pike being mentioned in the Age the other day.

Hope the thought of sitting next to Thomas persuades him to stay at Punt Road.

Seems this rumour about McGuane has some legs to it .

If anyone wants to work for the Tiges and Tezza, the opposition analyst coaching gig could be up for grabs soon .

I hope McGuane stays with us too but the reaility is its a full-time job versus a part-time one  . Let's hope Grant Thomas goes with Martin Pike or even better thinks of getting Spud instead .

Wallace was asked on Sport 927 about McGuane possibly becoming the new Saints assistant coach  - a caller had rang in earlier claiming it was a done deal that Mick was off to St Kilda.

Tezza said the club wouldn't stand in Mick's way as full-time jobs in coaching are hard to come by if Mick wanted to go down that path and there were no guarantees with us. Tezza also added that Micky had been great for us so far and from his perspective we want Mick to remain at Tigerland.

FORMER Collingwood premiership player Mick McGuane last night confirmed his interest in St Kilda's vacant assistant coaching position.

McGuane, who has been working with Richmond in a part-time role analysing the opposition for senior coach Terry Wallace, was recently interviewed by St Kilda senior coach Grant Thomas and his lieutenants Matt Rendell and Jason Cripps.

McGuane has been working at Richmond as an opposition analyst — what is usually known in the football industry as a "forward scout" — and, in a vote of confidence by senior coach Terry Wallace, had just been appointed head of the Tigers' scouting, responsible for coordinating research on all 16 clubs.

David Wheadon, who had been in charge of opposition analysis, has moved into a development role.

McGuane confirmed that Wallace had given him permission to pursue the St Kilda job, on the grounds that it was a full-time position because, despite his promotion, he would be only part-time at Richmond in 2006.

McGuane is one of a dozen or so candidates to have been interviewed by the Saints, who have cast a wide net after losing Terry Daniher and club legend Nathan Burke from last year's panel. Daniher has since joined Carlton.

Quadruple premiership player Martin Pike, like McGuane a figure known for off-field misdemeanors as much as his footballing feats, also has been interviewed for the Saints' position. The Saints are hiring only one assistant coach to replace Daniher and Burke.

McGuane has been keen to break into assistant coaching ranks for some time, having served an apprenticeship in local football with Gisborne, which he coached to consecutive premierships, and Tasmanian club Burnie, which he guided through a season undefeated.

"You just go and work hard," he said, asked how he had sought to overcome past perceptions. "When you're getting results like that — I only lost about nine games in four years — you're doing something right."

Sports Tonight says the Saints assistant job is down to three - McGuane, Pike and a pretty successful bush coach called Jason Mifsud who comes from the same area as Grant Thomas apparently. The segment was pushing up Mifsud. Let's hope Thomas goes with him as we'd then hold onto McGuane.

Mifsud got the job with the Saints but they also appointed McGuane aswell.

What a bummer, they had said they would only appoint on person after losing 2 coaches. They must have been pretty impressed with McGuane also to put on 2 more assistant coaches

Disappointed with the announcement to be honest.

I wonder what we are going to do now ??? Seeing the Chief opposition analyst post at tigerland is currently only part time

Disappointing news . Then again GT's ordinary history with assistant coaches might mean McGuane could be back with us next year.

I wonder if David Wheadon will return to this role of opposition analyst now or we'll find someone new perhaps even someone close to OER lol.

I'd be happy to be the forward scout. Being in Adelaide I can't get to many games but I could write up an assessment each week based on the deep insights one can gain from football journalists.

"Club XYZ has lots of players rotating through the midfield. They have a forward line that likes to score goals and a backline that likes to stop goals being scored. Sometimes their setup works and sometimes it doesn't. I recommend we focus on trying to have a higher score than the other team by the end of the game."

I'll charge $100 per game.

... That experience resulted in his first step back to AFL through an unpaid part-time role as forward scout analysing opposition sides for Richmond coach Terry Wallace last year.

He impressed to the extent that this year the club found some money and offered him an expanded role, but it was still only part-time. He accepted but when the full-time offer at Moorabbin emerged Wallace was supportive of the move.

"He is terrific, he really is," Wallace said. "He has got a real sound understanding of not just the personnel — which I reckon can sometimes be pretty easy — but it is the trends of the game, it is where the game is going, it is structures and set-ups, being able to see things that only a few people in the game can see.

"I went and had a coffee with him because I didn't know him — it wasn't a mate's job last year. It was in the back of my mind about his reputation as well, and that's why I went to speak to him. But what I love about people is we are not all the Michael Vosses, James Hirds of the world that do everything perfectly well. I love the people that have been able to change along the way and he has."
