Maric could take player-coach role

JON RALPH
Herald Sun
9th September 2016

IVAN Maric has been told by Richmond it wants to keep him at the club next year in a role combining football, leadership and coaching.

The 30-year-old played just three games this year after injury problems and the emergence of Shaun Hampson as the club’s lead ruckman.

But while Richmond is still keeping its options open ahead of what it has promised will be an aggressive trade period, he has been told he is a wanted player.

Coach Damien Hardwick loves Maric’s selflessness and leadership at a club where that has been in short supply in 2016.

The former Adelaide ruckman has also had some interest from rivals but at the least a one-year contract as a rookie could see him playing while working with the club’s young ruckmen.

The Tigers have secured the commitment of Gold Coast onballer Dion Prestia but seem likely to lost ruck/forward Ty Vickery to Hawthorn.

It means apart from Hampson and Maric the club’s ruck stocks are thin, with Maric’s cousin Ivan Soldo the only other backup.

Surely not.

A 30 year old can only manage 3 senior games this year but we are willing to keep him for another.

We are keeping him for his selflessness. Bit of a contradiction I would have thought.

They should move on half the list.

Can't we just stick him on the VFL list instead....or is he still hoping to get games?

Meanwhile there will probably be blokes like Downie & Nankervis going cheap and the likes of Darcy Cameron & Tom Goodwin sitting in the state leagues.....

Deledio said he had spoken to ruckman Ivan Maric yesterday about his future.

Maric, who will be 31 in January, played just three games for the Tigers in 2016 and has attracted interest from Collingwood.

“He’s got that decision to make,” Deledio said.

“He’s been offered a position at Richmond but he also wants to make sure he’s a chance to play some senior footy.

“What I love about Ivvy is he’s still got that fight and desire to perform at the highest level, and he wants to still give it everything he’s got to play with Richmond going forward.”

Would take Maric any day of the week

However would also consider getting Mark Lee out of retirement

Buckley said on 360 last night that all the stories about them going after old players wasn't true but then contradicted himself by basically saying they had plenty of kids and needed some experience...so go figure....

Really can't stand listening to him on that show, I like Chris Scott cos he actually treats people with respect rather than talking down to them (despite what Dooks believes, I do rate him as a coach).  Buckley looksd own on everyone.
