Rebel Richmond group approve Balme appointment

The rebel Richmond AFL group ‘Focus on Footy’ says it approves of the club’s appointment of Neil Balme as the new Head of Football.

Despite the decision, the rebel group, headlined by Richmond premiership players Bryan Wood and Bruce Monteath, continue the push for a takeover of the Richmond board.

“We applaud the Richmond Football Club’s decision to appoint Neil Balme,” Dr. Martin Hiscock, President-designate of the Focus on Footy ticket said.

“He is back at Tigerland where we said we wanted him.”

Balme played nine seasons for the Tigers in the 1970s, for a total of 159 games.

He coached Melbourne for four years in the mid-90s before taking over as Football Operations Manager at Collingwood in 1998.

“We believe the installment of Neil as General Manager. Like the CEO of Football role we envisaged, is one of the key initiatives that will resurrect Richmond.”

“We spoke to him several times last week and understand why he has chosen the path of least resistance.

“The Board’s choice of Neil and their plans for him are a carbon copy of one component of our Focus on Footy Plan. They may not be talking to us, but they’re certainly listening!”

While the group was delighted with the appointment, Hiscock continued to criticise the board for what he said was a total lack of accountability for such a mediocre season.

“Balme’s appointment is yet another predictable example of a Board motivated by self-preservation.

“On the footballers’ night of nights, the Club’s B&F last week, Damien Hardwick chose to blame the players and coaches: “The coaching staff and players take full responsibility,” he said.

“We say the blame ultimately rests with the Club’s Board. Success and failure always starts at the top.”

Sure they were already speaking to Neil Balme before the challenge  :snidegrin :shh
Never said they spoke to Balme but with the current board under threat they have felt they needed to get Balme to keep current/ potential/ perceived challengers at bay.

Yeh I wasn't speaking to you but fwiw, I agree.
No worries, I apologise.

I get the distinct impression that we at shifting Dan Richardson under Neil Balme to be re-trained as a GM of Football, Hartley is being shifted under Richardson to see out the final year of his contract, they've moved the recruiting guy in to replace FJ but kept his part time?

Still smacks of nepotism and not holding people accountable.

Hartley should never have been on a contract, based on his record should be sacked, as should FJ as should Dan Richardson.

Balme has simply inherited passengers which isn't going to help his impact.

Couldn't agree with this more.

Great news at the end of a very negative season.. Can't help but agree that we've created jobs for plebs who shouldn't be there because we either want to save money, not be seen as 'eating your own' or can't make tough calls.

Positive is that Balme will run the show.
Go Tigers!

Fantastic news. Neil is a wonderful appointment as he is one of the most experienced administrators and football managers in the business.

Hopefully he will bring in the right people to take over key coaching positions that are now vacant at the club. The players now have someone that they know will guide them in the right direction too and must be chuffed.

Kudos to the RFC.

It's about time we had some good news!

Welcome home Neil, great news.
He won't suffer fools and we can expect smart logical football decisions more often than not.

Great political move by benny and peg.  Just when the heat was increasing they pull the rabbit out of a hat.  The same rabbit that should have been pulled years ago but they were confident in themselves and in the L plater that they didn’t need Balme.  Reactive as always and needed things to turn to poo before they realised serious change was required.  The masses will rejoice in the streets now and then board can go back to sleep.
Does anyone have half an idea on anything?

Didn't want to come to us back then. Not sure if it was the money or just not the right timing.

Spoke to Balme about 8-10 years ago while he was at Geelong. He said that everybody always asked him about the Tigers. He said they were a basket case but he still had a soft spot for them. You could see it in his eyes even then that there was a connection that would never extinguish. Fantastic story that he'll finish his career where it started. :thumbsup
