THE RICHMOND PLAYER WHO OPPOSITIONS WOULD BE "PHYSICALLY SCARED OF"

By Laurence Rosen
SEN
17 July 2021

Richmond ruckman Toby Nankervis made his return from injury in his side’s win over Brisbane on Friday night, playing his first game since Round 11.

The hugely influential big man had 22 touches, four marks, four tackles as well as 25 hit outs, highlighting his importance to the Tigers.

Nick Dal Santo said he was “tackling to hurt people” during the game, saying his physical approach was something his teammate “fed off”.

“I thought he had intent with his application at the ruck contest and particularly around the ground," he said on SEN's Crunch Time.

“He was tackling to hurt people and probably pushed things a little bit – we have to be careful with the sling tackle – but he was the big presence that the other players fed off on Friday night.”

Former Richmond assistant coach Justin Leppitsch said Nankervis was one of only a few players in the AFL who oppositions would be “physically scared of”, saying he was critical to the way Damien Hardwick’s side plays.

“He always touches a line in (the physicality) part of the game," he said.

“They need him to get up and going, he’s not the tap ruckman that most teams have in the competition, he’s the follow up guy.

“There’s not many players in the competition you can be physically scared of anymore, but I think he’s one of them.”

Key Tiger Toby Nankervis compared to Giants enforcer Shane Mumford (SEN)

KEY TIGER COMPARED TO GIANTS ENFORCER

By Alex Zaia
SEN
20 July 2021

Hawthorn great Dermott Brereton absolutely loves what Richmond ruckman Toby Nankervis brings to the table.

The triple premiership Tiger made an instant impact in his return against Brisbane on Friday night – a match Richmond simply had to win to revive their finals hopes.

Nankervis collected 22 disposals – including a game-high 18 contested – to go with 25 hit-outs, 10 intercepts and seven clearances, with his physicality in the air and on the ground making him one of Richmond’s most important players.

Speaking on SEN’s Bob and Andy, Brereton compared Nankervis’ “nasty” nature to GWS enforcer Shane Mumford.

“It is close to my heart, and I reckon it’s fantastic, good on them. It’s hard to do now,” the five-time premiership Hawk said.

“The Tigers had eight snide acts. I probably shouldn’t call them snide … shifty, nasty, careless - Toby had three of them.

“There was one in the first quarter where big Oscar (McInerney) sensed the ball was dropping a bit short so Toby went for the spoil, recognised he couldn’t get to the spoil, so he just flushed him in the back of the head with a spoiling arm.

“It was a good old solid ear massage. I thought, ‘That’s been lacking at the Tigers’, while Toby Nankervis has been out.

“He’s the new Shane Mumford. He’s accidentally, purposely clumsy. He’s a touch nasty and he’s aware of his size.

“He does play to that old ethos of, ‘Let them know I’m around’.”

Nankervis was key in Richmond’s 20-point win over the Lions as the reigning premiers moved back into the top eight ahead of a clash against Geelong on Sunday.

Didn't notice said ear massage. Might take a look.

It's very true though and exactly why we love him. The dangerous tackle was BS though.

Jonathan Brown praised Nank after half-time for being an old-school ruckman that threw his body around at stoppages and tackled to hurt in an effort to stop North's dominance in the clearances. Nank had 5 tackles for the game which was the second most.

Bargain buys

Michael Whiting
afl.com.au

AFL.com.au has combed back over the past 12 years – since a miserly six players were exchanged during the 2008 trade period – to find the best 'value' pick-ups.

Who are the diamonds in the rough who changed clubs for little expense and went on to flourish at a new home?

2016 - Toby Nankervis

Lightly used by Sydney – playing just 12 games – the young ruckman was moved to Richmond for pick No.46. Nankervis quickly entrenched himself in the Tigers' line-up, winning premierships in 2017, 2019 and 2020. He's played 86 games in the yellow and black, is still just 27 years of age and is arguably one of their most important players.

RANKING AND ANALYSING THE 10 BEST DEPTH RUCK TRADES SINCE 2010

By Nic Negrepontis
SEN
14 October 2021

1. Toby Nankervis (Sydney to Richmond at end of 2016)

On paper, Jacobs has had the best season of any traded depth ruckman, but Toby Nankervis takes the top spot for different reasons. After 12 games at the Swans in three years, Nankervis moved to Richmond in 2017 and became a central figure in their drought-breaking premiership.

He helped define the club’s hard edge and gave them a reliable ruckman across what would become a triple-premiership dynasty. He has played 91 games in the yellow and black and at 27 still has years left to add to that, even if his body has let him down in recent seasons.

...

5. Ivan Maric (Adelaide to Richmond at end of 2011)

Ivan Maric sits in the middle at no.5, which is fitting because his presence in the AFL helped shape the top two members of this list. Maric lost his role as the Adelaide starter in 2011, but was exactly what Richmond needed when he joined the following season.

His toughness and cult presence carried the team for four seasons, before injuries finally caught up with him. However, there’s no questioning the impact he had, and still does have, at Tigerland.
