Nankervis is "the most undisciplined player in the game": Cornes (SEN)

TIGERS CO-CAPTAIN “THE MOST UNDISCIPLINED PLAYER IN THE GAME”

By Alex Zaia
SEN
21 July 2022

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick isn’t happy with the “harsh” treatment co-captain Toby Nankervis is receiving from the umpires.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Hardwick revealed the Tigers have contacted the AFL umpiring department over some of the free kicks paid against the ruckman.

Nankervis has conceded a league-high 49 free kicks this season, including six in last week’s upset loss to North Melbourne.

While Kane Cornes agrees that too many tiggy touchwood free kicks are paid in ruck contests, he says Nankervis only has himself to blame due to his poor discipline.

Cornes accused Hardwick of “whinging” and labelled Nankervis “the most undisciplined player in the game”.

“Surely some responsibility needs to go back on Nankervis. Is he the only ruckman that is harshly dealt with?” Cornes told SEN Breakfast.

“Certainly some of the free kicks Nankervis gives away aren’t just in the ruck contest, he’s one of the crudest tacklers in the competition.

“Clearly it’s costing them in big moments. It’s fine when you’re winning premierships and everything is going well and you are playing on the edge, but when you lose two games essentially by the last kick and you look at one player who’s given six free kicks away, he’s given away some big 50-metre penalties throughout the year and you’re on the cusp of missing the eight, then you look at it a little bit closer.

“The responsibility’s got to go back on Nankervis – I think he’s the most undisciplined player in the game, and that’s not just from ruck free kicks.

“If Damien Hardwick was honest here, and clearly I don’t have a breakdown of all the 49 free kicks he’s given away, but a lot of them aren’t from ruck contests, a lot of them are for crude tackles.

“Do we need more whinging from Hardwick again? It feels like Richmond are whinging about something all the time.

“Great if you’ve spoken to the umpire department, terrific, that’s what you should be doing, but does he need to tell everyone that they’ve spoken to the umpiring department, or should that be done behind closed doors? I don’t think we need to be alerted to that.

“He’s had a crack at a few things over the journey, Damien Hardwick, and this just feels like another whinge to me.”

Barrett's view of why Dimma said what he said.

* Important must win season defining game on Friday night after stuffing up the past two matches.
* Nankervis is up against Sean Darcy.
* Nankervis does everything in his power at every contest to push the boundaries on what is and isn't acceptable. Elbows, arms and feet flying everywhere. It's intimidating! There's no rule in the game that says the free kick count has to be equal. 22 frees for and 49 frees against. Go watch Nankervis play.
* It's a reflection of how Dimma played himself. He's a combative person.

From Barrett's Sliding Doors column:

IF ...
Dimma actually took a proper look at the way big Nank plays ...

THEN ...
he wouldn't be sooking it up to the AFL about a perceived bias in free kicks paid against his ruckman. He's also probably privately whinging, again, about having to play another game at Marvel Stadium, on Friday night against Fremantle.

Tell Barrett to go and watch the free kicks (and report) paid against nank last week and get him to explain what the indiscretion was.

IF ...

Damien Barrett had been better treated by his mother

THEN ...

He wouldn't be doing a job that is one or two steps above prostitution.

I thought Nank was extremely poor again. Hasn’t been a great fortnight for the tough guy and looks to be on one leg.
Can’t buy a mark either   :banghead

Very very disappointing

Yep ball went through his fingers repeatedly.

Not sure if he's right but given the forward time he had you'd think his knee is stuffed. Couldn't get off the ground. One hit out to half time.

Might have to go Soldo alone as the only strengths Nank has over him are looking greatly diminished at the moment.

Spotlight on Nank

All eyes were on Toby Nankervis’ treatment by the umpires, after Damien Hardwick shone the spotlight on the way he is officiated in the lead-up to Friday night’s contest. After giving away a game-high six free kicks, being reported and not receiving a single whistle his way against North Melbourne last weekend, Hardwick described Nankervis’ treatment as harsh and was hoping for a better result against the Dockers after Tigers officials took their gripes to the League’s umpiring department. The spotlight, however, stayed well away from Nankervis from both a frees-against and impact point of view as he prominently featured as a makeshift key forward instead of his natural role in the ruck - with the returning Ivan Soldo taking on the lion’s share of ruck minutes.

10 disposals (2k, 8h, 6c, 3u, 30% eff.)
1 contested mark
3 F50 tackles
1 inside 50
10 hitouts
66 metres gained
1 score involvement
74% time on ground

Gotta agree on this week had little influence but sheesh we all know he was injured from the week before.
Despite the frees against nm i thought he was  good.

Maybe it might have been smarter to rest Nankervis and bring in both Ryan and Soldo but hindsight is a marvelous thing.

Knee clearly bothering him. Can't jump and elevate.

Should rest him and just play Soldo + Balta back and relief.

Lynch back hopefully, Miller or Gibcus could be tried forward.
