How would having the majority of our games played in a timeslot that gets very little national free to air coverage benefit sponsorship and membership growth?

Well, our CEO recently noted that a draft fixture is circulated and then negotiated.

Predictable timeslot, at our home ground, at family friendly time and usually FTA covered.  I think that'd help rather than hinder our fan engagement, attendances and corporate relationships.  I've taken plenty of clients to the footy over time and it's always easier to get them to a day game than a Saturday night.

Our fixturing for 2017 is, as the Club admits, disappointing.  I know winning gives us the greatest leverage but I'd rather we make that time our own wherever possible.  We don't have much of a home ground advantage, so getting games played at a non-prime but still preferable time and location means we can make the best of our situation.  Build it up.  Make it ours.

for the most part, i like what simon has put forward. but this concerns me.

Simon it seems as if on this matter you are only looking whithin your own little bubble.

When corporations hand over money to sporting clubs they want exposure, and as much as possible.

your notion would give our club the least free to air tv exposure of all the clubs, or pretty damn close to it. So how do you sell that to potential sponsors?

it would alienate a large number of supporters, and members who pay out their hard earned while not being in a position to actually get to many games. Your idea of vastly reducing the amount of richmond games they get to see on TV could very well mean they say stuff it, if the club actively reduces the games i can watch, then i will actively reduce my money flow into their coffers.

How is saturday arvo a family friendly time? maybe for some;

what about the families that are involved in local footy?

Is this idea one that you have actually researched and considered all parties it will affect, or is it something based on what suits you and your circles?

what about the families who like to do other things as well as football on the weekend?

what about the families that don't live in melbourne?

Hi and thanks for the feedback.

First.  Sponsorship value isn't just eyeballs x rate.  Witness us being the most watched and attended H&A team in 2015 but not having the corporate support of others with far less "exposure".

I'd support playing times that suit most, both in number and supporter category.  Saturday afternoons or Sunday twilight?  The data is pretty clear which supporters prefer.

We'll never get all our non-marquee games at this slot, but we first played with a red footy in late June this year.  Whoever possible, request 2.10pm on a Saturday.  Your point regarding those who live out of Melbourne is well made - travelling > 1.5 hours to and from the G (as a number of fans who've been in contact with me do) makes evenings and even twilights problematic.  2.10pm means you have your morning and your evening and, yes some of this is anecdotal, but playing games regularly at our ground on a Saturday is preferred and something I do support.  Maximises pregame coverage, too.

Local footy commitments?  Well lucky we have our headline games.  And away games.

We don't have much leverage after the year we just had, but I'd at least try to make that time and place our default request.

I spoke to a LOT of people before I launched.  Almost all of them didn't know I was planning to run and many were strangers/ Tigers at the ground or on the train. Saturday afternoons was a clear preference.

1st point is valid, there is clearly much more to sponsorship income than home and away attendance. There is performance, at which we suck, and there is TV exposure. Why do you think that the friday night slot is desired? it brings TV ratings and thats what sponsors want. Its a national game and they want millions of people accrross the country to see their brand, not just the 30-50k at the 'G

are thes stats you claim in relation to a preference between saturday arvos or sunday twilight? if so thats a a misleading stat. where are they BTW?

It may be something you wont die in a ditch over, which is good because i dont think you have thought it through fully.

There will be no one timeslot that suits everyone, so having a variety of timeslots is the only valid option, some will be better for more than others and some will better from a corporate point of view than others. and I dont know how many people have contacted you that counts as lots, but what percentage is it of the 70k we have as members and hundereds of thousands of others that support the club but dont buy memberships because they cant get to games, but watch as many games on tv as they can?

I have little doubt that if you offered the other clubs to take as many Saturday arvo timeslots they would jump at it.

And from a personal point of view, if the club deliberately took action that reduced me to seeing only a handful of games that would be it for me, not just financially but of any interest.

I can vouch for this. All points are very valid. If I was told I could only attend Saturday day games and marquee games I would simply never be able to attend (do a lot of Friday and Saturday night work) except on the rare occasion if I was lucky. This would make me think, "whats the point of buying a membership" if I could only attend 1 game a year if I was lucky when I could just go up on the day and buy a ticket there. Hell I wouldn't even be able to watch many games on the TV so it'd probably disconnect from the game completely.

But I'm only one person so stuff me right? Need to look after those corporate buddies
