When is the AFL rookie draft? AFL pre-season draft, order, how does it work, who can be picked?

Foxsports
27 November 2016

AFL clubs have the chance to find the next Matt Priddis, Kieren Jack or Luke Dahlhaus on Monday afternoon, when the pre-season and rookie drafts are held.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the two drafts.

WHEN ARE THEY HELD?

BOTH the 2017 Pre-Season Draft and 2017 Rookie Draft will be held on Monday 28 November from 4PM AEDT.

While held in 2016, naming conventions and scheduling of previous pre-season and rookie drafts mean they are titled as the drafts for 2017.

Neither draft will be televised, with foxfooty.com.au providing live coverage of the picks as they happen online.

HOW DO THEY WORK?

EVERY club is connected via a conference call and a computer screen that is administered from AFL headquarters.

The computer will log each selection in real time.

Clubs will be granted two minutes for each selection and will have one opportunity to ask for extra time, as per the national draft guidelines.

THE PRE-SEASON DRAFT

THE 2017 pre-season draft will start first at 4PM on Monday 28 November.

The pre-season draft is an extension of the national draft, so all players taken must go onto the club’s primary list.

However the introduction of free agency has somewhat diminished the importance of the pre-season draft. It is for uncontracted players to nominate that missed the national draft or any players who were delisted after the main draft.

It would be somewhat of a surprise if one or more players are taken in the pre-season draft.

For 2017, all clubs must have between 38 and 40 senior listed players. However the only clubs that are eligible to participate in the pre-season draft are those who are yet to fill their list with the maximum of 40 players.

Notable past pre-season selections include Kurt Tippett (2012), Bachar Houli (2011), Ben Cousins (2009), Eddie Betts (2005) and Nick Stevens (2004).

The most recent pre-season draft selection was Jason Tutt (Carlton) in the 2014 draft, while Jed Lamb (GWS) was taken in the 2013 draft.

THE ROOKIE DRAFT

BETWEEN the final pre-season draft selection and first rookie draft pick, clubs with academies or potential father-son selections have the ability to select those players, without fear of another club outbidding them. In other words, there is no bidding system.

The order for the rookie draft is the reverse of the AFL ladder at the end of the finals series.

There are different rookie categories:

— Category A rookies are primarily players who have had a traditional Australian football development

— Category B rookies are players from non-traditional recruiting backgrounds, such as former middle distance runner and current Geelong player Mark Blicavs.

Each club is permitted to recruit up to three category B rookies and between four and six category A rookies.

International, father-son or category B rookies who have already been signed (such as GWS signed and former Commonwealth Games decathlete Jake Stein), will still have their name read out with the club’s last pick of the rookie draft.

Many players have been given promises by clubs to be selected in the rookie draft, such as Ben Jarman — the son of Adelaide and Hawthorn great Darren — who the Crows will select if he is not taken in the pre-season draft, which is unlikely.

At the conclusion of the rookie draft, each club must have filled its senior and rookie list as there will be no more opportunities to sign players before the 2016 season.

WHAT TYPE OF PLAYER IS TAKEN IN THE ROOKIE DRAFT?

THERE are multiple snubbed draftees who are likely to receive rookie lifelines.

Jonty Scharenberg, the brother of Collingwood defender Matthew, was overlooked in the national draft despite being rated by some as a top 25 pick going into the night.

Mature age recruits such as Jye Bolton (Claremont, WAFL), Liam Ryan (Subiaco, WAFL), Brett Eddy (South Adelaide, SANFL) and Michael Gibbons (Williamstown, VFL) are also contenders.

Notable players from last season’s rookie draft included Tom Papley (Sydney Swans, 20 games), Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti (Essendon, 21 games) and Tom Ruggles (Geelong Cats, 18 games).

Crows Charlie Cameron (Pick 7, 2014) and Rory Laird (Pick 5, 2012), Swan Dane Rampe (Pick 37, 2013), Cat Mark Blicavs (Pick 54, 2012) and Bulldogs Luke Dahlhaus (Pick 22, 2011) and Jason Johannisen (Pick 39, 2011) are arguably the best rookie draft selections of the last few years.

Second-chance saloon: The most likely 2016 rookies

AFL.com.au
27 November 2016

HOPE is not lost for the players who missed out in Friday night's NAB AFL Draft.

The rookie and pre-season drafts will run on Monday afternoon and give more opportunities to those who were overlooked. Here are 10 possible rookies who may see their name called.

Jonty Scharenberg
Midfielder
183cm/81kg
28/8/98
Glenelg/SA

It was a bit of a surprise that Scharenberg wasn't picked in the national intake. However the inside midfielder should get a go as a rookie after a relatively consistent season at under-18 level for South Australia and in the SANFL. The younger brother of Collingwood defender Matt, Scharenberg is good in tight with his hands and can distribute the ball well out of stoppages.

Cameron Zurhaar
Forward
187cm/89kg
22/5/98
East Fremantle/WA

The West Australian may appeal as a medium forward who can clunk marks on the lead and is competitive whenever the ball is in his area. Zurhaar plays with some physicality and bounce, which makes him have an impact around the ball, and he's able to use his frame to manoeuvre himself in stoppages and get the ball going his side's way. His 'in-between' size may have been a factor in why he slipped through on Friday night.

Oscar Junker

Midfielder
191cm/84kg
23/1/98
Western Jets/Vic Metro

Junker had gathered some interest from clubs as a late selection in the national draft so it would seem unlikely he doesn't get a go on Monday at the rookie intake. The tall left-footed midfielder is a nice size and can use the ball strongly through the midfield and across the wings. He played one game for Vic Metro at the championships but his best form came in patches for the Jets at TAC Cup level. He would be a good choice as a rookie.

Sam Walker
Defender
185cm/79kg
16/3/98
Glenelg/SA

Walker was pretty unlucky not to get a go on Friday night given some of his form throughout 2016. The All Australian defender from South Australia was a consistent stopper this year and also showed some dash at times out of defence. He was linked to some clubs as a possible second-round selection so it was a surprise he did not find a home, but he would seem a good chance to get a lifeline on Monday.

Hamish Brayshaw

Midfielder
186cm/85kg
9/2/98
Sandringham Dragons/Vic Metro

Unfortunately injury didn't help Brayshaw's cause this season. He injured his foot at the start of the year and then played with a crack in the foot towards the end of the season. He led the Sandringham Dragons to their flag win, and is a tough and combative midfielder with upside. He can also go forward and kick goals, a little like his brother Angus, the Melbourne midfielder. Brayshaw had surgery at the end of the season to fix his foot so if he gets a chance will be starting off a little later.

Matt Guelfi

Midfielder
183cm/77kg
14/8/97
Claremont/WA

Guelfi is an inside midfielder who has a real attack on the contest. He's aggressive and tough, and enjoyed a strong start to the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships for Western Australia. He can perhaps lack that breakaway speed and pace, which may be a reason he did not get a chance on a senior list, but as a rookie he would be able to come in and play a role reasonably early. He is also a year older than most draftees having played as a 19-year-old this season.

Kym LeBois
Small forward
173cm/68kg
25/5/98
North Adelaide/SA

LeBois has some excellent bloodlines, being the nephew of former AFL players Gavin Wanganeen and Alwyn and Aaron Davey. He plays a little similar to Alwyn as a small forward who can dart around the packs and make something out of nothing. He has a good step out of trouble that opens up space and he's generally damaging around goal when he gets a chance. His size has worked against him, but he should have done enough to get a chance as a rookie.

Mitchell Hinge
Defender
187cm/79kg
26/6/98
Glenelg/SA

In the eyes of some recruiters Hinge was one of the most unlucky players to not get a shot. His size and athleticism as a rebounding, intercepting half-back caught the eye at times through the year. He is a good mark overhead and can be trusted to kick-start things out of defence by foot.

Zach Sproule
Tall forward/defender
196cm/89kg
12/4/98
Murray Bushrangers/NSW-ACT

The GWS academy product didn't get a chance via the national draft but may appeal as a rookie selection. Sproule's best attribute is that he can play at either end, and he is also an excellent long-distance runner so is able to move up and down the ground. Sproule is a nice, long kick for goal when stationed in attack but may be best suited to defence in a negating role. The Giants nominated him as an academy pick but did not take him at the draft.

Tony Olango
Ruckman
197cm/82kg
2/9/98
St Marys/NT

Tim English and Sean Darcy were the only pure ruckmen to get a shot on Friday, showing that clubs tend to prefer to trade for rucks or take them as rookies if they can. That may open the door for Olango to get a shot after showing great athleticism and improvement across the year. The NT prospect is a strong leap and has added some muscle to his frame, plus he is quite good with the ball in his hands at avoiding traffic and being solid by foot.

Zach Sproule fits that bill.

Is perilously close to 200cm, do you know if he has stopped growing?

He fits the "almost over 200cm" profile so hopefully they do their due diligence

Word on Sproule is that he suffers from a severe lack of intensity - to the point that he even makes Vickery look like a competitive beast...which if true, basically makes him another Jayden Post...

I reckon we take Scharenburg if he's there at our pick (will be very surprised)

Not doubting that as he was overlooked in the ND but who's word?
Watched him in the curtain raiser at the G and wouldn't have said he lacked intensity let alone severely.

The possibility of physical and mental collapse is now very real. No sympathy for the Devil, keep that in mind. Buy the ticket, take the ride.

Being from Albury, NSW, he also fits the "going home" factor.

Brayshaw for mine, quality individual and a good size, has been through the Sandringham Dragons system so knows what is what

I would actually take Jake Barrett from GWS. He has been killing it in the NEAFL over the last couple of years. Bigger, stronger and faster than Miles.

I think he is the best player available IMHO.

we might as well take Bling back too seeing he has been killing in the NEAFL...but on the serious side, Raf Clarke should  be able to give us all the good oil on gthe NEAFL and if we should target someone.

Xavier Richards likely to go to Essendon.

Geelong and Adelaide are set to secure father-sons Sam Simpson and Ben Jarman respectively.

---------------------------------------------

A raft of halfback flankers are available on Monday. Mitch Hinge, Sam Walker, Bailey Morrish and Jack Henry should all find their ways onto a league list.

Oscar McInerney, 22, is the standout ruck prospect. The 204cm Montrose lad won the league medal in the VFL reserves, playing for Melbourne’s affiliate Casey Scorpions.

Hamish Brayshaw, the brother of Melbourne hard nut Angus, is also a chance to find a home.

GWS academy prospect Zach Sproule will appeal as a 196cm swingman.

Kym LeBois shapes as the most promising small forward. The Ceduna kid is the nephew of 1993 Brownlow Medallist Gavin Wanganeen as well as brothers Alwyn and Aaron Davey.

LeBois plays in the Davey mould but stands only 173cm.
