Back from training. Perfect day outside.

Absent:
Dusty (personal)

Rehab:
Prestia (hammy): 200m runs along the outer boundary. Moving at a decent pace given it wasn't a bad hammy.
Vlastuin (hammy): Still a fair way off by the look it. Mostly jogging also along the boundary but not at any pace.
Riewoldt (thumb): Left the track before I got to training. Pics showed he walked a lap or two.

Main group:
A few drills today focussed on centre work and contesting. No real surprise there after the Carlton game and with us facing another strong midfield in GWS.

Drills today were:
- line drills: squad split into their lines to work on separate things.
- Tackling & handball keepings off in close.
- Pinball (my name for it): Players would run with the ball and bounce off about 3 blokes holding paddings.
- "Craft and technique": just 4-vs-4 centre contesting work and centre clearances (rucks & mids only)
- Match play
- Circle work: Defensive clearance, switching and transition.

Lines:

Backs: Grimes, Tarrant, Short, D.Rioli, Gibcus, Brown, Mansell, Broad, Ralphsmith, Miller, Biggie.

Rucks/Mids: Ross, Cotchin, Edwards, Soldo, Caddy, Nankervis, RCD, Dow, Bolton, McIntosh, Graham, Martyn, Parker, Sonsie, Stack, Pickett.

Forwards: Baker, Castagna, Lynch, Balta, Lambert, Ryan, Cumberland, Banks, Clarke, M.Rioli.

Balta - trained with the forwards so as Dimma said that's where he is playing on Sunday.

Bolton - did the full session ... phew!

Lambert - did the full session by the look of it but in the match play played as a half-forward. So no centre and heavy contesting work yet.

Dan Rioli - a watch and see. He should still play as he completed the training session with the main group but a couple of times during the session he spent time with a trainer and about 5 mins in the rehab group.

Maurice Rioli - I've been critical of his ability to kick over distance accurately but his three around the body shots from 40m all went through the middle.

Stack - trained well today. Very clean.

Any questions .... just fire away?
Given Ross has been named in the middle (where he should always be) was he training there & if so how did he go?

Yep, from what I saw when they did the centre work drill and match play Ross was one of those rotated through the centre square. He wasn't one of the first starting 4 in the drill though. He stood aside with Sonsie and I've forgotten who else (Parker?) waiting for his turn. They oddly in the match play had Will Martyn on a wing instead which didn't make sense either because he's an inside mid and not a wingman as well. Anyway, Ross did win one clearance that I recall when he gave off to RCD and then received back by hand running out of the front of the stoppage (the old one-two). They stopped the drill as soon as a ball was won and out of the centre circle so it was hard to judge how he went in terms of clean clearances and finding targets inside F50. The drill was more about centre-bounce "craft and technique" if that makes sense. Hopefully with Kmac and Pickett named on each wing Ross will be pushed back into the middle against GWS.

Rather see Pickett go on ball & Ralphsmith play on the opposite wing to McIntosh.... :shh

Interestingly Grimes is in the pic. So he must have pulled up sore at training today  :huh.

1 for our track watchers, has it looked like we are in a "hard training phase" & if so could that be a reason for us running out of legs?

Nah wouldn't say so, JR. We have only one main session per week now that the season has started and individual player workloads are managed. My criticism of our training is at times the skill level is ordinary and not it's picked up. The last main session prior to our season opener was very sloppy. It was a bit better prior to round 2 but still not a high standard (I didn't see last week's session before the Saints game). As the old saying goes you play the way you train.

I do question our fitness and conditioning since Rob Inness left but we also use up excess energy because we're wasteful. Every little fumble and missed open target under no physical pressure (and dumb ill-disciplined free kick) is so costly especially with the more open game under these new rules. It kills our momentum and you've got to work so much harder as it opens us up on defensive transition and you've got to win the ball back all over again in the back half rather than having a clean easy possession and you're off into attack to score.
