Btw forgot to say there were at least 100 people watching training today (bandwagoners  ;D ) including two groups of schoolkids on excursion. Hey why didn't my school have excursions to watch the Tiges?! Ripped off! :rollin

Teacher: "Your assignment today kiddies is on Tigers".
Kids: "At the zoo?"
Teacher: "Nah, Punt Rd"  :thumbsup

LOL @ the teachers justifying this to the Education Department.

how did chaffey go?

Trained with the main group and got through the whole session. Looked to be moving freely during the drills and showed no sign of the calf injury that has kept him out since coming back from OP. He played on Hyde in the scratch match and Hyde would have had far more of the ball through the midfield. Paul Armstrong said on Club Corner on Monday night that Chaff would play some proportion of a game at Coburg this weekend. They haven't decided yet if that'll be for Coburg seniors or their reserves.

Only a short report today as I only saw the last half hour. It would have gone for 2 hours as they were scheduled to start at 11am and they finished around 1pm.

Only about 25 blokes completed the session. The rehab group must have gone inside by the time I arrived.

Present: Newman, Raines, Simmonds, Chaffey, Joel, Knobel, Polo, Pettifer, Paddy, Rodan, Limbach, Tuck, Meyer, Jackson, Cogs, Patto, Krak, JON, Blingers, Tivs, Clever, White, McGuane, Foley, Humm and Howat.

Absent: Gas, Lids, Browny, Roach, Staff, Richo, Sugar (watched from the race in casuals), Razor, Schulz, Hyde, Hartigan, Thursty, Casserly, Kellaway, Moore and Graham.

The last half an hour was on the run goalkicking practice. The squad was split into three groups with one in the square and the other two on opposite HFFs. The ball would be kicked out from the square to someone on 50 who would then handball to a teammate running towards goal. The player running towards goal had to get around an opponent and have a shot at goal from a range of about 30-45m.

Pretty disappointing and Wallace said so himself afterwards. He told Sugar who was standing in the race in casuals that it was good training session apart from the last part. The boys did the goalkicking drill in two goes and the first time they kicked 7 from 17 shots and the second time only 13 from 25. The conditions today were good too. Bright sunshine and only a gentle breeze. So there were no excuses for missing. I couldn't single anyone out individually as it seemed everyone missed at least one. Lack of penetration and balance and not kicking through the ball properly would be my main reasons why shots were missed.

On reflection, MT, was there anything from last week that you noticed would have led to how we played on the weekend?
And, if so, should Adelaide sack their forward scout?  :shh

I only saw the last half hour of training last Wednesday Moi and they were working on running goals - run inside 50, dodge around an opponent then take a ping. It was different to the norm in itself and Newman's goal on the weekend was the drill in practice, but there was no keepings off. The keeping off drills must have been done before I arrived.

Training today went for about an hour and 45 minutes starting at 11am. All the squad was in attendance except for Thursfied while only Graham, doing handball drills on bourndary, was not with the main group. Btw Tommy Hafey was there today watching training :thumbsup.

Lots and lots of 1-on-1 stuff today which was good to see as other clubs have found this is way to stop Geelong - man them up and put them under pressure.

The first couple of tasks were straight line short distance drills. The squad was split into four smal groups by the members fence and matched-up 1-on-1. Each player had to first accelerate, lead and mark over a 10-15m distance under pressure from his man behind him. This was followed by picking a rolled ball off the ground under pressure and handballing off. Wheadon kept barking instructions to the "defender" to not go easy on any fumbles by the guy in front. Overall well done.

The whole squad then moved out to work on longer passes over 30-40m. It was basically running kick to kick but the boys were paired up as attacker and defender. The attacker would lead and mark under pressure from his opponent then run forward and pass with his pairing now acting as a teammate telling him his all clear.

The next drill was more game based 1-on-1. The squad was split into a forward line at each end of the ground and two groups of midfields in the centre that would alternate. The drill would begin at HB with the midfielders all huddled in the centre trying to lose their direct opponent. As the huddle split everyone would be man-on-man and the attacking "team" would work their way forward with short passes to leading teammates. The midfield group was roughly 6 vs 6 and every attacker was offering leads to the player with the footy. Most of the passes were forward with a couple sideways to switch the play. Out of interest there were no back passes as we saw on the weekend. On one occassion Wallace said the movement of the footy was outstanding. There were only one or two poor passes that didn't hit their target so overall once again well done.

The squad then had a scratch match. As with the drills earlier it was man-on-man all over the park and the team going forward would hold the ball up to find the right pass inside 50. I can only remember two obvious turnovers so the game was fairly clean as far as disposal went. One error by Tivs when he scrubbed a kick along the ground and the other by the Yellows up at the other of the ground which I couldn't see who it was but he should have had a running shot at goal instead of passing to a 1-on-1 contest. Lids, Richo, Sugar and Meyer stood out with Lids one time running through the midfield and passing to Richo about 45m out on an angle then receiving the pass from Richo directly in front 30 out and goaling. Cogs took a top overhead mark about 15m out and goaled.

Browny and Casserly were the only ones who didn't join in and they spent their time on the boundary doing kick to kick. Moore, JON, Limbach and Paddy rotated on and off the ground.

Teams:

Blacks:          Yellows:

1. Newman       2. Gas
3. Lids         6. Chaffey
4. Raines       8. Roach
5. Simmo       10. Stafford
11. Joel       13. Knobel
12. Richo      14. Polo
15. Pettifer   18. Rodan
16. Paddy      19. Limbach
17. Sugar      20. Hall
21. Tuck       22. Meyer
23. Jackson    29. JON
24. Cogs       30. Tambling
25. Schulz     33. Hartigan
26. Pattison   34. Hughes
27. Krakouer   38. McGuane
31. Hyde       40. Moore
32. Tivs       41. Foley
35. White      42. Humm
39. Kellaway   43. Howat

Match-ups:

Joel-Hughes
Schulz-Limbach
Chubba-Staff
Newman-Howat

Simmo-Knobel
Tuck-Humm
Tivs-Rodan
Hyde-Chaffey
Sugar-Moore on a wing
Krak-Foley
Lids-Tambo

Richo-Gas
Patto-Razor
Pettifer-Polo
Jackson-McGuane
White-Meyer

Scores: Blacks 3.0-18 (Cogs, Richo and Lids) to Yellows 1.0-6 (Hartigan)

The last drill was a 6-on-6 passing game in the centre of the ground. Each 6-team would take turns maintaining possession and moving the ball forward with any mistake immediately being classed as a turnover even if the same "side" maintained possession. There was one backward pass to switch the play but most kicks were forward to leading teammates who had run hard into space. Overall cleanly done with Tambo having a field day running and bouncing with the footy. At least twice he brushed off an opponent at HB ran to HF then dished off by either hand or foot.

And that was it except for some set-shot goalkicking to finish off. Terry told the boys it was an excellent session.

I've got some photos but not many. I'll see tonight if they are worth putting up.

Forgot to say Casserly hopes to be playing next week. Presumably with the Coburg ressies. So touchwood, if we don't get any further injuries, we may only have Thursty and Browny on the sidelines in 2 weeks time.

Not that I saw Moi. Just looking on from the race in shirt and tie, signing a couple of autographs and then walking around to chat to someone sitting down.
