“Training probably progresses now into more match-play simulation-type training,” Richmond Physical Performance Manager, Peter Burge said.

“There’s a little bit of conditioning we still need to do, because we are preparing for round one, ultimately, and the NAB Challenge is a great preparation component to that … so match-simulation, more specific drills, increasing time of training.

“The guys are doing a fair bit of hard work, our GPS numbers are increasing with that as well, so load-management becomes important for some players; it’s similar to every other year but we’re just trying to do things better this year than what we did them last year.

“Obviously there are changes to our training the coaches are implementing, but in terms of numbers in rehab and guys healthy and training, it’s looking pretty good.”

A key element of Richmond’s training schedule again this year was a pre-season training camp in northern Queensland held in Palm Cove and Cairns in mid-Decemer.

Burge indicated he can already see signs of positives gained from the camp upon the post-Christmas resumption of training.

“We’ve been up to North Queensland the last couple of years with the heat-training philosophy and we’ve put a lot of research into that and we feel we get a lot from it, and this year was no different,” he said.

“It was a fantastic camp; the guys worked extremely hard.

“The way the guys have come back from Christmas, some of the indicators we’ve looked at so far, there’s no doubt that the camp has given us a really good platform.”

Richmond’s Friday morning (January 15) training session will be open to the public with the gate out the front of the Tigerland Superstore open from 9.15am for a 9.30am start.

Richmond's Alex Rance is also back into full training after an extended off-season break in America and the Tigers are pleased with the progress of the players traded and drafted into the club with Daniel Rioli's skills standing out.

Former Carlton speedster Chris Yarran, who joined the Tigers in the trade period, is progressing well but he did not train on Friday due to illness.

Rance worked strongly having returned last week from his extended holiday to the United States, while former Blue Chris Yarran was a notable absentee, missing the session due to illness, but club officials are confident he will be back on deck quickly.

The Tigers started the pre-season with nine players in the rehab group, but that has since shrunk, with only Shaun Hampson (ankle), Taylor Hunt (knee) and Nathan Drummond (knee) being managed.

With only two players on the list aged 30 or over, Hardwick said the club had been able top get a significant amount of work into its players before pre-season matches start.

"Overall, the amount of work we've been able to get into the players from a football and running point of view, we've been very happy with," he said.

"We've had great numbers on track and the fitness of our players has gone to a high level.

"The age demographic of our list is at a point where they've played a lot of football together and I've got no doubt we’ll get better again."

Chris Yarran, whose 2015 season ended with a hamstring injury, completed his own running session on Wednesday, with ruckman Shaun Hampson also on a modified program as he returns from ankle surgery.

Midfielder Taylor Hunt is due to return to full training shortly after a minor knee complaint, while Ben Griffiths and Dylan Grimes were on light duties.

Young midfielder Nathan Drummond worked closely with fitness staff on his leg strength and ran laps as he continues his recovery from a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Draftee Daniel Rioli worked closely with half-forwards Shane Edwards and Sam Lloyd in Wednesday's session, impressing with his clean hands when crumbing the football.

The majority of the club's draftees, who will push for opportunities when the Tigers face the Dockers on February 16, are completing a smaller portion of the summer program.

So in other words, Shane Edwards & Sam Lloyd worked closely with Daniel Rioli...
