Richmond’s final training session before MCG showdown with GWS attracts thousands of fans

Sophie Smith,
Herald Sun

THOUSANDS of Tigers faithful took the day off work and school to watch an open training session at Punt Rd on Friday.

Mascots greeted fans as they sprawled around the ground in hot anticipation of the session and Saturday’s preliminary final against Greater Western Sydney, pushing forward for a closer look as the boys came out.

Men, women and children of all ages were three-deep in some places along the sideline, with motorists in passing cars tooting and shouting, ‘Go the Tigers’ as they drove past.

One boy sported a ‘Dustin Martin haircut’ as kids kicked footballs and loyal supporters became emotional talking about their club’s finals run.

Laurice Desilva, from Cranbourne, let her son skip school to see the training and hopefully get his footy signed.

“We couldn’t get tickets so we thought we’d come down,” Ms Desilva said.

“There’s a lot of people but I was expecting that. Everyone just seems happy and excited. It’s great. I love the atmosphere.

“I’ve been waiting so long for them to get into the finals so it’s very emotional for my family.”

Sports commentator David McKenzie attended with his family, all showing support.

“It’s been 35 years since we’ve made a final and 37 years since we’ve won one,” Mr McKenzie said.

“Everyone talks about it — the long-suffering Tigers fans — so it’s a surreal feeling to be deep in September.

“When you’ve grown up with it and it’s in your veins — you’ve got to embrace it.”

The somewhat pensive crowd became more vocal through the training session, some shouting as if they were at a game.

Despite the strong turnout, a handful of punters believed more would have come for the occasion that Martin was an obvious crowd favourite at.

“I thought there’d be more to be quite honest,” Stephen Peters said.

“I had to bring my granddaughter — third generation.

“They’re playing awesome at the moment.”

Bek Demicoli said she was surprised by the season the Tigers have had.

“I didn’t think we’d make it this far. We just want to support them.”

Sea of yellow and black as Richmond Tigers prepare for preliminary final

Richmond players were given a heroes' welcome from thousands of their adoring fans at Punt Road Oval on Friday.

The yellow-and-black masses were out in force to watch their beloved Tigers have a light training run before their date with destiny.

The Tigers are aiming to qualify for their first grand final in 35 years when they face Greater Western Sydney in the second preliminary final at a sold-out MCG on Saturday. If the Tigers are successful, they will break the longest active grand final drought in the AFL.

But judging by the atmosphere at the club's spiritual home on Friday, it felt as though they had already made it to that last Saturday in September.

One diehard fan, Al, flew in to Melbourne from outback Queensland to watch his Tigers.

"I've been a member for 50 years and this is fantastic. I don't think GWS have a chance. It's like going to Adelaide or Perth. Once you go there, you've got the home-crowd advantage. We've got the same thing here but we're going to have 90-odd thousand," he said.

Married Richmond supporters Cameron and Rochelle drove from Brisbane on Wednesday and arrived in Melbourne on Thursday night.

"It means a great deal to Rochelle and myself. It's a long wait, we've been faithful to the club since we've been kids," Cameron said.

He admitted he never thought he would see Richmond again feature in the penultimate weekend of the season.

"We've got five kids and all we said is we wouldn't mind the Tigers being in a grand final - even though we're not there yet - in our kids' lifetime," he said.

"Our youngest kid is now 21, so it's been a while. We've got grand kids now, too, so we've been saying the same thing for the grand kids. We had a new grandchild born three weeks ago at the start of the finals series, so I'll take that as good luck."

Rochelle, who said the main reason she married Cameron was because he was a Richmond supporter, added: "They never see their grandad without his Richmond top on."

The players were given boisterous cheers as they made their way out from the dressingroom.

In keeping with the relaxed nature amongst the playing group, and their insistence on embracing the hype, star defender Alex Rance played up to the crowd, triumphantly raising his arms as he ran down the race. But the biggest cheer was unsurprisingly reserved for Brownlow Medal favourite Dustin Martin.

One supporter felt compelled to yell out: "Dusty, you're a god!"

There was some good-natured banter amongst the fans, too.

When some support staff exited the club house, one supporter yelled: "People we don't know!"

And that was also followed by good-natured cheering in what was a very humorous moment.

Such are the excitement levels amongst the Richmond faithful that they erupted into impromptu renditions of the club's famous theme song.

Shivers were sent down the spine when they belted out the "yellow and black" chorus line. One can only imagine what it will sound like when close to 95,000 fans do the same thing at the MCG on Saturday.

Richmond CEO Brendon Gale received three cheers from the crowd as well in a show of gratitude for how far he and his board have taken this club after so many barren years.

The teams split their results through the season but the Tigers, fresh from a week off after thumping Geelong in the qualifying final, will begin their latest clash as a strong favourite.

Coach Damien Hardwick said his players had embraced the Tiger Army and the finals hype but warned this would not help them come game day.

"There is a big crowd but we are pretty fortunate at the Richmond footy club that we get to play in front of big crows most weeks," he said.

"This is probably a little bit different because there is going to be a pretty parochial crowd behind us. Once we cross that white line, they will give us great support but the reality is they don't get kicks, marks, handballs. Our players have to fulfil a duty to get the job done."

Hardwick said it was difficult not to feel the hype.

"It's a celebration, really. I think as coaches we probably look at it and say: 'Listen, let's not buy into it'. But the reality is, we are in the final four of a competition that has gone a hell of a long time. We are really excited to be here," he said.

"Once we get into here (the club), it's all work. I wouldn't say the fun stops. We still have a good time doing what we do but we embrace what we are and look to challenge ourselves and bring our best foot forward come Saturday afternoon."

The Giants, having joined the AFL in 2012, are likely to have only a few thousand supporters on Saturday. Giants coach Leon Cameron has maintained this is irrelevant, a point Hardwick reinforced.

"Once the players cross the line, they will come to play, the Giants. They are an incredible football side. We have to make aware that their very best football is very hard to beat. We have to make sure we come to play," he said.

Regardless of the result, there's one thing that's certain - there are bound to be tears. For the Tigers' faithful, it's hoped these are tears of joy.

Anyone know what time the final training session will be this Thursday?
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

Richmond's Punt Road open training session to be lockout on Friday

Scott Spits
The Age
September 28 2017

Now that the Tiger Army has been woken from its slumber, get ready for the onslaught.

As Richmond readies for their first grand final since 1982 with excitement building across Melbourne and the club's inner-city suburban home, Friday's open training session – the final chance for fans to watch their heroes train – is bound to be a lockout.

The grand final players will take to the famous Punt Road Oval turf from 9.45am on Friday but the venue, which hosts VFL matches, can only cater for about 5000 spectators.

After the 30-minute session, the players will take part in the annual grand final parade – along with the Adelaide contingent – through Melbourne's streets as part of the grand final eve public holiday.

Richmond president Peggy O'Neal reminded the club's supporters that parking wasn't available at Punt Road and said they should check the club's website for other information.

"If there's a lockout, there's a lockout ... we have to give precedence to security [issues] and the safety of the people coming in and those sorts of things," O'Neal said.

One of the AFL's biggest supporter bases may have been dormant at this stage of September for the past 35 years, but they are set to be unleashed for the Tigers' first grand final since they lost to Carlton all those years ago.

"We knew it was always there," O'Neal said of the Tiger Army. "And you can see people are excited when something's happening for the first time in a very long time.

"But the Tiger Army we always knew would get behind us. And the suburb of Richmond is a very exciting place to be right now.

"I'm feeling great. No nerves, just excitement."

THAT'S A WRAP FROM PUNT RD

- Chris Cavanagh
Herald-Sun
29 September 2017

RICHMOND players have had their last run through ahead of tomorrow's Grand Final in front of a large and vocal crowd at Punt Rd Oval.

Gates were locked an hour before the 9.45am session after the ground reached capacity of about 5000 people.

The 22 selected players and three emergencies for tomorrow's clash with Adelaide trained for about 30 minutes before heading to the boundary line to sign autographs.

The loudest applause was saved for recently crowned Brownlow medallist Dustin Martin, with chants of 'Dusty' ringing out around the ground.

The Tigers' song was also heard being sung in the stands throughout the morning.

Midfielder Kane Lambert, who was under an injury cloud with an ankle earlier this week, got through the light session without issue.

IIRC RR, the players' EBA allows them a 8-week holiday break. So I'm presuming the whole squad will be back into full preseason training by end of Nov/start of Dec. Usually, the 1-3 yr blokes come back first followed by the bulk of the middle-age group a few days to a week later. The older ones come back last.
