Will be soon. There is training planned for this Saturday but it may just be a  (big) running session and may not be at PRO. Soon there will be "full scale match sims" on Saturday mornings including VFL guys.

Tigers to get early look at young stars as prized top draft pick sets sights on prime time debut

Ed Bourke
Foxsports
January 23rd, 2025

Richmond No. 1 pick Sam Lalor is eyeing a prime time AFL debut against Carlton in Round 1 as the Tigers prepare to blood most of their bumper 2024 draft class next month.

Lalor said Taj Hotton, who is recovering from an ACL injury suffered last year, was the only Richmond draftee who had not spent most of the new year in full training.

The Tigers are poised to take on a dramatic new look when they travel to Perth to face West Coast in their first practice match on February 17.

Lalor, fellow strong-bodied midfielder Josh Smillie, key forwards Jonty Faull and Harry Armstrong and defender Luke Trainor are all in the frame for selection against either the Eagles or Collingwood in the Charity Shield game at Ikon Park on February 26.

The fitness level of the draft crop is a welcome boost for last year’s wooden spooners, who have gaps to fill all over the ground after the departures of premiership players Shai Bolton, Daniel Rioli, Liam Baker and Jack Graham to other clubs and the retirements of Dustin Martin, Dylan Grimes and Marlion Pickett.

Another void to fill was created by Noah Balta’s club-imposed ban for the December 30 incident that led to him being charged with assault.

Balta’s absence for at least the first four weeks of the season could bring Trainor or another tall draftee straight into the senior side, as Josh Gibcus and Tylar Young continue to recover from ACL injuries suffered last year.

“Pretty much everyone (from the draft class) has been full training, except Taj (Hotton), who’s obviously done his ACL,” Lalor said.

“A couple of us have been in and out, but we’re all feeling pretty good. We’re working well together, and we’re just enjoying each other’s company.”

Richmond compete in intra-club match

Richmond competed in a pre-season hit-out at the Swinburne Centre on Friday morning.

Teams were split into Yellow and Black, with VFL Tigers (Mutaz El Nour, Tom McKenzie, Harry Scott, Tom McCarthy, Nick Girolami, Liam George and Sam Toner) also featuring in the match.

Tom Lynch was potent early, registering two scoring shots in the opening five minutes, including the first goal of the morning.

The 32-year-old finished with two goals.

Luke Trainor showed promising signs as an intercept defender, while Harry Armstrong hit the scoreboard up forward.

Samson Ryan made a strong start to the match with a couple of marks inside 50 and finished with two majors.

Also hitting the scoreboard was defender Nick Vlastuin.

Vlastuin was one of the Tigers’ best on the day, as was Tim Taranto, who was prominent in the midfield, finishing with three goals.

Jacob Blight was strong in defence, reigning in some strong intercept marks.

Sam Lalor showcased his power out of the midfield with some exciting bursts.

Also performing strongly in the midfield was Jack Ross.

“The boys turned up today and we had a really good hit-out,” Ross said.

“We just wanted to simplify the game. We’ve been training really hard on a few offensive and defensive patterns and trying to play a little bit faster throughout the middle of the ground.”

Spending his time playing inside midfield on Friday morning, Ross said “I feel like I'm tracking in the right direction.”

“The last couple of years I’ve kind of floated in and out (between) inside midfield and a bit of wing,” he said.

“This year I'd like to play a little bit more inside, but also with the flexibility going outside and a little bit forward as well.

Ross labelled the performance of Lalor on Friday morning as “really exciting.”

“He’s a big bull…I think the Richmond army are going to love him,” Ross said.

“He’s powerful, can go forward and play inside (midfield), but he just wants to learn…he asks lots of questions and I love playing with him.”

Cameras capture Richmond teammates Jayden Short and Rhyan Mansell in physical altercation

By Harrison Reid

A pair of Richmond players have settled their differences after a heated tussle with each other at training on Monday.

Rhyan Mansell and premiership defender Jayden Short were entangled in a wrestle after Short clipped Mansell high in a previous contest.

Mansell took his frustration out on the 2020 best and fairest, who was pinned on the ground underneath his younger teammate before 21-year-old Sam Banks came over to separate the two.

There was a moment of angst before the pair both moved on.

Some Richmond fans might say they appreciate the aggression within the team as they try to lift themselves off the bottom of the ladder.

RICHMOND

Role changes and who’s ‘tearing up the track’:

Tom Lynch said Rhyan Mansell has “taken his training standards to another level” this pre-season, dubbing him someone to watch amid an impressive stint, and it was a similar situation last pre-season in terms of being tipped for big things. He played a career-best 21 games last season for 21 goals, but the best might be yet to come. In terms of position changes, Jacob Koschitzke failed to make a lasting impression as a forward in his debut Richmond season last year, and the Tigers’ coaching panel has since made the call to trial him in defence. The former Hawthorn key forward has played in the back half this pre-season during match simulation and given Noah Balta’s absence for the first four games due to suspension, and pending the short-term health of Josh Gibcus, Koschitzke will be in the frame for early-season senior action as a defender. Kaleb Smith and Sam Banks are among the possibilities to replace the departed Daniel Rioli across half-back.

AFL training report - January 31

AFL Media's Sarah Black provides a report from Richmond's training session on Friday.

Richmond spearhead Tom Lynch "can't take a trick", placed into concussion protocols after a collision in the Tigers' match simulation on Friday.

The 32-year-old has played just eight games in the past two seasons, but has been training well this summer.

In his scheduled press conference, assistant coach Steve Morris was unable to provide much clarity about Lynch's timeline to return, given the immediacy of the incident.

"'Lynchy' can't take a trick, he's entered concussion protocols. He's had an outstanding probably eight weeks of training, he's firing on all cylinders," Morris said.

"I found myself on the bump bag – unfortunately – a few times and just he's just training with some real purpose. So it's a bit of a speed bump for him, but he's in really good nick and hope to see him back in the really near future."

Dion Prestia completed one-third of the hitout before running laps, and is on a managed load this pre-season given his extensive history of soft tissue injuries. Nick Vlastuin and Kane McAuliffe also completed two-thirds of the scrimmage.

Mid-season recruit Jacob Blight left the field in considerable pain, holding his right shoulder, but Morris said it appeared he has escaped damage.

Noah Balta only trained in the gym, providing Category B rookie Ollie Hayes-Brown plenty of time up forward, after Jacob Koschitzke was switched to defence.

Jacob Bauer played up forward in the As, at one stage booting a set-shot goal from 55-60m.

"He's tracking all right. We've asked him to really dig in into his training over the last little bit and what I've seen is a guy who's really committed to earning the trust of his teammates," Morris said of Balta.

"He's put everything out on the table over the last few weeks, doing extra sessions and he knows that he's got to get himself red-hot fit.

"He's a really important player to our team and our club and I think he's doing a really good job at the moment under the circumstances he's facing."

Rising half-forward Seth Campbell racked up plenty of midfield minutes in the "A" team, alongside Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper, while Samson Ryan, Thomson Dow, Tom Brown, James Trezise and Tyler Sonsie were in the "B" side.

Sam Banks provided plenty of dash out of defence, while No.1 pick Sam Lalor appeared to be spending more time forward with occasional midfield stints in the "As", as did Rhyan Mansell.
