Tiger members retain challenge rights

CHRIS VERNUCCIO,
Herald Sun
15 December 2016

RICHMOND chief executive Brendon Gale denied last night’s annual general meeting was a “fiery” affair but members have kept the door open for future board challenges.

Tiger members last night rejected a proposal to increase the number of signatures required to call an extraordinary general meeting from 100 to about 2500 — five per cent of registered voting members.

But they gave a vote of confidence to the current board with incumbent members Emmett Dunne and Kerry Ryan re-elected.

Earlier this year rival ticket Focus on Footy ultimately failed in its attempts to call for a spill of the board.

Gale did not believe failure to change that aspect of the club’s constitution put the board on notice, saying members simply wanted to “preserve their rights”.

“Members have got a few very important right. One is they get the ability to appoint directors, decide who’s on the board. I think it’s just a sign that I think members want to preserve those rights,” Gale said on SEN radio this morning.

“I wouldn’t say it (AGM) was fiery but it was good, spirited discussion.

“Look, AGM’s are really important occasions for all member-based clubs. It’s a rich opportunity for people to come ask questions about the agenda and a range of other things.”

Members, however, did support a motion to limit board service to three terms.

Dustin Martin and Alex Rance, first and second in last season’s club awards, were awarded with life membership, along with 1985 best-and-fairest winner Trevor Poole.

Gale, meanwhile, said Trent Cotchin was a deserved Brownlow medallist.

“He had a very fine year, he’s a very fine player and very fine role model and we’re really proud of him,” Gale said.

“The circumstances were unusual, we don’t need to go over that, but we’ve only had four in our history and now we’ve got five. And he’s a very well-deserving one.”

Richmond CEO Brendon Gale denies the rejection by members to increase the percentage of numbers required to call an Extraordinary General Meeting is a sign that they are concerned about the club’s on-field direction.

In a spirited Annual General Meeting at Punt Road Oval on Wednesday night, Tigers members voted to maintain the current 100 signature threshold to call an EGM, rather than increase it to five percent of eligible voting members.

It would mean around 2500 signatures would have been required to call for one in the future.

“If that threshold was higher, it would mean you would have to present a more compelling case,” Gale told SEN Breakfast.

“Given the past few months, that was probably a little sensitive and that didn’t get up on the night.

“Members have got a few very important rights, they get the ability to appoint directors, decide who is on the board, and that’s through AGM and elections through EGM.

“I think it’s just a sign that I think members want to preserve those rights.”

Gale says the AGM put an end to what has been a challenging year and the message last night was to look ahead, with exciting new talent arriving at the club.

“One of the pleasing things about the AGM, and it would be the same for most clubs is you really do put a full stop on the year, financially and even on-field.

“It’s more looking forward, Damien (Hardwick) and Neil Balme as Head of Football briefly addressed the crowd.

“It was more about the future and addressing the new talent we’ve bought into the club, through trading and drafting, and it gives everyone a great sense of excitement and we’re very much looking forward to that.”

He says the club is very proud of Trent Cotchin receiving his 2012 Brownlow Medal on Tuesday, and praised the skipper as a ‘fine role model’.

“We’re really proud of him, a Brownlow is such an auspicious award,” Gale said.

“He had a very fine year, and he’s a very fine player and a fine role model.

“The circumstances are unusual…but we’ve only had four (Brownlow Medallist’s), and now we’ve got five and he’s a well deserving one.”

Spin spin spin again. What we really care about is how the team plays this year under Hardwick game structures. Will the game plan improve or will we play Crab embarrassing Benny Hill football again?

Hopefully things improve and we have a good year! If that happens the fans and members will turn up...

We haven't voted in many directors at all. Clubs become a bit of a joke with regard to how it's treating its suppprters recently. What happened to the 5 pillars? Did they talk about that debarcle last night?
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

Peggy did a slide show on the 5 pillows.
Extended and expanded on number 4 to include member engagement which she pointed out.

Any specifics with regard to measurable targets? Or more rhetoric?

No specifics. No measureable targets. More statements about what they are aspiring to do.

They've been aspiring for a long time now.
If only people at the club were perspiring for the cause as opposed to aspiring...
