Tigers' midfield boost will see Dusty move forward

AFL.com.au
19 December 2016

STAR midfielder Dustin Martin is poised to spend more time in the forward line after Richmond bolstered its centre square rotation by trading in Dion Prestia and Josh Caddy.

Martin, 25, spent most of the 2016 season on the ball and responded with a maiden berth in the All Australian team, as well as his first ever best and fairest award.

However, his nine goals was the lowest tally of his career.

Richmond forward line coach Justin Leppitsch told RSN on Monday morning the club's boosted on-ball division would allow Martin to spend more time in attack.

"That's the plan. The depth of midfield we have that can play forward, with all of those players – Caddy, Prestia, Martin and (Trent) Cotchin – that's going to be our strength this year," Leppitsch said.

"If we can harness and keep those players on the field as long as we can … that will be a tactic I'm sure we're looking at for the whole season.

"But as you know, you start the season with a tactic and how it ends is often different."

Richmond lost goalkickers Brett Deledio, who was traded to Greater Western Sydney, and Tyrone Vickery, who joined Hawthorn as a restricted free agent, at the end of the season.

Leppitsch identified stopping the opposition from scoring as a key area of focus. The Tigers missed the finals this year for the first time since 2012 and had the fourth-leakiest defence in the competition.

"There's some things defensively as a club that we're working on pretty hard, because we feel that's the biggest area of growth. I'm taking some of those responsibilities in tackling and things like that to try and hold up the opposition," he said.

Would like to see Martin doing 20-25 touches/game and jag 30-40 goals for the year, like Deledio at his best.

Did we lay a tackle in 2016? I must have missed it.

Ya gotta laugh.

So we have a problem with the forward line AKA Jack.
So we're going to play our best midfielder forward.

Another genius move from the deadheads that moved a dual Coleman winner away from goals, delisted three tall forwards, recruited none, refused to play Vlastuin midfield ahead of Hunt, consider Grimes a viable third tall defender, say Garthwaite is a key defender, recruited a bigger-bodied mid to take pressure off Cotchin and then decide Martin, the biggest, strongest and best mid should spend less time in midfield. Oh yes, and recruited a coach, who played all his AFL footy as a back, to coach the forwards and his first idea is to defend better in the forward line.

Ya gotta laugh.

Ya gotta laugh when someone genuinely has no idea what they are talking about.

Leppitsch played a LOT of football as a key forward. A LOT, the guy would have kicked near enough to 200 AFL goals.

Ya gotta laugh.

For all that the team played pretty well when Leppa was at RFC and I think the group missed him and his energy.
Let see how he goes next year but I like what he brings to the table.

If I was an opposition coach I would prefer to see Martin nowhere near the forward line, especially one out. Leppa also played exclusively as a forward as a junior and kicked 194 goals in his career. In 1996 and 1997 he kicked 45 and 50 goals. He is the ideal forwards coach knowing how to play both ends of the ground.

Leppa is happy being an assistant to an assistant masquerading as a coach.

One of the new coaches (not Leppa) wants Martin to spend more time forward this coming season. This is not to say he will play forward permanently as he is needed in the middle. Martin, Cotchin and Caddy are the perfect players to rest deep forward and I would do the same with McIntosh. Regarding the coaches, you cant have Rutten and Leppa coaching the back line together so give the club credit as they recruited a very good assistant coach in Leppa.
