Hoodoos and hoodoos in the making - Richmond losing streaks
« on: January 12, 2017, 08:16:37 PM »
Which teams do Richmond have a notable losing streak against? Will they continue due to another year of misery? Are we in the midst of becoming other teams bunnies?? Do we have any bunnies ourselves ?

Courtesy of some quick research via Footywire for discussion.

Hoodoos -

1. Geelong - last win round 9, 2006. 0 wins, 12 losses (2007-2016)
The very definition of a football hoodoo. This hoodoo will be most familiar with tiger fans. You have to go back 14 games and 11 years to round 9, 2006 when we last won against Geelong. That's pre-iPhone days. Prior to this we hadn't beaten the Cats since 2000 so that's just 1 win this century. Additionally, we have only beaten Geelong at home once since 1990.

2. North - Last (real) win - round 5, 2011. 3 wins, 12 losses, 1 draw (2007-2016)
Putting aside the shambles where North rested their players in round 23 2015, the kangas have won the last 7 in a row against us.  And by often heavy margins. This includes the Elim final loss in 2015. Bunnies we are.

Hoodoos in the making?

1.  Bulldogs - last win - round 13, 2013, 3 wins, 8 losses, 1 draw (2007-2016).
Richmond have lost the last three years in a row to the premiers. Given the current state that of lists it's a likelihood it will be 4 years straight. In addition, apart from a run of three wins in 2012-13, Richmond hadn't beaten the Bulldogs since round 3 2005. In the last 10 years we have a terrible winning record of just 25%.

2. Melbourne - last win round 8, 2013. 5 wins  7 losses (2009-2016)
We've also lost three years in a row to the Dee's and lost so many games we were favourites to win. Considering how rubbish melbournes list has been pre 2015, it's a terrible record. And who can ever forget the Hafey tribute game?

3. Adelaide - our last win over the crows was in 2014 and have an inferior winning record over the last decade.
4. West coast - our last win over the eagles was in 2014.
3. Hawthorn - surprisingly we've lost 3 of the last 4 and a measly 33% winning record since 2007.
5. Port - beat us twice last year and murdered us in that elimination final. We also only have a 40% winning record against port since 2007.
5. Gold Coast - 3 wins 3 losses (2011-2016). Considering how young and unsuccessful their list has been, it's a poor set of numbers for Richmond. The Suns fancy there chances against our mentally weak squibs like no other team. Will things get worse against the GC?
6. Gws - after winning the first 5 in a row, Gws belted us last year. Watch this space.
7. St.kilda - Richmond didn't beat the saints between 2006 and 2011. Following an unbeaten run against the saints from 2012 to 2015, the saints beat us last year and our lists are seemingly heading in two different directions.

Hoodoos in the making over other teams?

1. Carlton - after losing 10 of 11 games from 2006 to 2013, Richmond has won the last 4 games in a row against the Blues.
2. Collingwood - A previous hoodoo which we broke in 2015 after years of losses. We've won 3 of the last 4.
3. Sydney - despite last years belting, we've won 6 out of 11 against the swans including 3 of the last
four. Will it continue next year?

Richmond bunnies

1. Brisbane - last win against Richmond - 2009. We've won the last 9 in a row against The Lions.
2. Essendon - we've won the last 5 in a row against the Dons and since 2007 we've won 12 and lost 7 against the Dons. Then again, who hasn't.

This hoodoo could be stretched all the way back to 1981. You listen to older Geelong fans and former players and officials from that era and they are still bitter about 1967, 1980 and even the 1969 SF flogging. It's almost as if the past 36 years is payback in their eyes.

2. North - Last (real) win - round 5, 2011. 3 wins, 12 losses, 1 draw (2007-2016)

The most infuriating hoodoo as they clearly pump themselves up for our game (they usually are coming off a loss and then lose the week after  ::) ) while we continually bring no intensity despite the pathetic record we have against the Roos. You would think just once we'd turn up angry seeking revenge but nup our mental softness is there for all to see  ::). We also continually fall for the Roos' sucker-punch counterattack gameplan where they flood back to clog our forward half and we continually play into their hands by blindly turning the ball over to these loose North defenders and they then just run it up the other end to an open goal. It happens every year :banghead.

As for the rest of the hoodoos (eg: Melbourne and Bulldogs before Beveridge arrived), we pretty much get beaten in contested footy out of the middle, so we're always on the back foot trying to set up attacks from defence with opposition numbers ahead of us. It turns these games into low scoring scraps where we try to play catch up but always fall short by a couple of kicks. The inability to adapt and change things that aren't working on gameday has been a major weakness of our coaching staff under Dimma and of our onfield leaders. We're like old vinyl records that get stuck in one groove and can't get out of it  :P.

Our hoodoo is that we are the experts in false dawns...any hope is blown away by the game that is suppose to redefine us as a real deal contender and we once again become keystone cops and basically dont recover for the next 7-8 games.
