New Tigers Prestia, Caddy and Nankervis impress in intraclub

AFL.com.au
Feb 11, 2017

RICHMOND'S list management team would have left Saturday morning's intraclub match at Punt Road thinking they might have made the right moves in the off-season.

Dion Prestia, Josh Caddy and Toby Nankervis, three of the club's major off-season acquisitions, each impressed during the 50-minute hit-out and appear likely starters in Richmond's best 22.

Prestia looked good off half-back, through the midfield and most importantly, moved freely. Knee injuries kept him to just 22 games in 2015 and 2016 for Gold Coast before his move to Richmond over the summer. He already shapes as a midfield leader for the Tigers.

Former Geelong utility Josh Caddy improved as the game went on. He played mainly in the midfield but also had stints up forward and took a lovely contested mark and kicked a goal from a difficult angle in the second term.

Nankervis was also impressive. The 22-year-old decamped from Sydney at the end of last year because of a lack of opportunity but would appear to have pole position to be the No.1 ruckman at Richmond this year.

With Shaun Hampson consigned to running the boundary on Saturday and erstwhile main ruckman Ivan Maric transitioning to coaching, the job would appear Nankervis' to lose and he looked sharp in the centre and used his mobility to get to contests and make an impact around the ground.

While it was difficult to draw too many other conclusions from the game, the Tigers did appear to move the ball more quickly and worked hard on ball transition.

Dustin Martin and Trent Cotchin eased themselves into the match, but were excellent in bursts. Martin played his usual mix through the centre and there were times when he was purposely isolated inside 50, where he was always dangerous. Jack Riewoldt featured almost exclusively inside the forward 50, but kicked three goals and had a hand in some others.

Nick Vlastuin was busy through the midfield, while Ben Lennon, Dylan Grimes, Shaun Grigg and Oleg Markov were also prominent. Daniel Rioli was quiet, but then electrified the 1500 fans in attendance with a family trademark brilliant tackle in the last of the three periods.

Ben Griffiths played forward for some of the match but was also thrown into the backline for stages.

Rookie Tyson Stengle looked comfortable at the level while developing big man Ivan Soldo rucked virtually the entire match and worked hard. He remains a bit down the pecking order at Punt Road but the Tigers believe he is making genuine progress.

Apart from Hampson, other Tigers who did not play included All Australian full-back Alex Rance, Bachar Houli, Shane Edwards and Steven Morris.

The Tigers have yet to finalise their leadership group for 2017, although there are expected to be few changes to the group headed by Cotchin last year.

Richmond opens its JLT Community Series against Adelaide at Etihad Stadium on February 24, before a trip to Mount Gambier to play Port Adelaide and then to Moe to play Collingwood.

The traditional season-opener against Carlton is at the MCG on March 23.

Other notes from first half
- B Ellis, Conca prolific
- C Ellis v sharp
- Caddy, Prestia on ball. Caddy has a goal
- Shai Bolton is fast

Richmond intra-club. Vlastuin to mids could be real, playing in guts has some big clearances + a goal #gotiges

Intra-club done. Caddy, Vlastuin standouts. Nankervis big unit. No injuries!
VIDEO: https://twitter.com/al_superfooty/status/830216229881143296

first hitout a bit scrappy, one beautiful end-to-end play for a goal

Vlastuin played there [midfield] all game apart from a stint at full-forward.

Caddy had a couple of stints up forward but mainly in the guts, I'd say 70/30.

Nankervis looked good but was mainly rucking v Ivan Soldo. Hampson was a boundary umpire.

Andrew French ‏@AFrenchy91 twitter:

The intra-club match seems to be over, played 20 / 20 / 10 minutes. Yellow team dominated. No injuries that I saw.

Highlight of the day. IVAN MARIC running like a cheetah to take the mark and slot the goal. [Ed. also added that Soldo had passed Ivan.]

Prestia  looking good mate, going in hard and keeping pace. Encouraging signs.

Graham not playing, was doing laps earlier, in the rehab group.

Josh Caddy slots the 45 metre goal from just inside the boundary. Looks in good shape.

Daniel Rioli with a HUGE take down tackle from behind on Ivan Soldo. Who’s probably twice his size.

Ben Woods ‏@TigerWooda twitter:

Rancey, Morris, Graham, Hampson getting some KMs into their legs before training. Will be interesting to see if they play

If Alex Rance can play a game of football after that running block I would be very surprised

main group has started.... these blokes still running laps ... then join main group.

Game is about to start. Rancey, Morris and Houli back into their running blocks. Looks like they won't participate

Dusty first clearance, Prestia first inside 50... I could get used to that

Vlastuin in the guts. Chops of Kamdyn's kick in... goes back and slots it

Brandon Ellis playing off HBF

Conca has had a lot of it early.. not clean though. Playing midfield

Vlastuin's pressure and tackling excites me. We were very lacking in that department last year

Anthony Miles on the bottom of his packs... nothing new here

Depressing tweet... Taylor Hunt still plays for Richmond

Skipper getting involved but he just got run down by Bolton. Kid is quick

Role reversal... Brando just took a kick out and kicked it to Vlas

Yellow team inside 50... not one player from the white team in their own half.

Brandon Ellis still doesn't have a left foot... but Caddy manages to plus a nice mark and slot it

Astbury had been good

Vlas and Miles the standouts so far

Looks like Dusty may have dislocated a finger. Soldiers on though

Fast ball movement by both teams. Play of the day there started with a great hit by Conca to Brando. Then Lennon to Jack (goal)

Vlas has been at every centrebounce

Caddy has been great. Two loose ball gets in about 39 seconds

Conca seriously has it on a string. Corey Ellis doing some nice, clean things

Prestia just shrugged a Vlas tackle right in front of me and it was hot

I don't remember Ben Griffiths touching th footy yet. This will be my biggest worry going into the season

Vlas BOG... slots his second

Len Bennon takes a nice mark and slots it

Some quick ball movement and a nice hit by Lloyd leads to Kamdyn running into an open goal. Bolton and Dusty involved

This Garthwaite kid has been solid in defence. Grigg getting busy

Corey Ellis can kick a football. Overall the skills have been pretty sharp

Jack working hard. Spots up Brando who slots one from 45

Conca' had a great game... but out in open space again and he can't find a target.

My votes:
5. Vlastuin
4. Brando
3. Caddy
2. Miles
1. Prestia
Stiff: Conca

Huge grab on the wing from Sam Lloyd. Kamdyn lining up for his second... left it short

Good footy there. Brando searching kick to Corey, hands to Cotchin who finds maric with his left. Goal. Coast to coast in 15 seconds

My boy Taylor Hunt just banged one in!

Rioli overran the ball... followed up with a perfect tackle on Bachelor,,, BALLLLLL

Big Nank has been good. Cotch and Dusty in a one on one on the flank. Free kick cotch. Plays on quick. Goal to Drummond

I've honestly been really impressed with the ball movement. Guys not afraid to look inside and pull the trigger

I think the game is actually finished now!

CHF is still a major concern for me regardless. Don't know if Griff is the man for it

The new recruits were good. Saw more heart from Nank in three quarters than I ever did from Ty in 7 years

Caddy was a genuine steal. Surely Geelong had cap issues if they were willing to give him up so cheap.

Caddy, Prestia shine in Tiger colours (Herald-Sun)

Caddy, Prestia shine in Tiger colours

Chris Cavanagh,
Herald Sun
Feb 12, 2017

HUNDREDS of long-suffering Richmond fans got out of bed early yesterday morning in the hope of seeing three things from the Tigers’ intra-club hitout at Punt Rd Oval.

They hoped to see strong performances from new recruits Josh Caddy, Dion Prestia and Toby Nankervis.

They wanted to see a more free-flowing and attacking game plan after the stagnant and frustrating play that plagued Richmond’s 2016 campaign.

And just 13 days out from the club’s first pre-season match against Adelaide, they were praying for no injures.

Tick. Tick. Tick.

Caddy was the standout from the 50 minutes of match play, finding plenty of the ball through the midfield and showing his class with a long goal from outside 50m on the boundary line.

In his first competitive hitout since having knee surgery last July, Prestia moved well and also won his fair share of the footy on managed match time.

Nankervis also performed strongly in the ruck, the former Sydney Swan having quickly become a favourite of coach Damien Hardwick and looking set to assume duties as the club’s No.1 ruckman this year.

Richmond midfielder Kane Lambert said the trio of recruits had all fitted in well.

“To see Nanks and Prestia and Caddy as well out on the park and see what they’ve got to offer, we’re really excited about what they can bring to this footy club,” Lambert said.

“(Nankervis has) been great. You don’t want to be on the opposition side because he’ll go right through you, Toby. But that’s what we want. He brings aggression and I think he’s going to bring a touch of class as well.”

While the intra-club match was played with a less-congested 16-a-side format, the ball moved quickly from end-to-end in a stark contrast to Richmond’s game last year.

Lambert said there had been some focus on moving the ball quicker over the off-season.

“We’re always trying to change a few different things from last year but obviously the footy’s pretty hot out there, the boys want to get their hands on it,” he said.

“So it probably was a bit too offensive but we’ll work on that throughout the year.”

A slimmed-down Nick Vlastuin played the match in the midfield as he prepares for a shift out of defence this year while Jack Riewoldt was lively in the forward line.

pffft, unless he actally learns how to play football, him being our best option is another way of saying we are in a world of pain
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
Nor are your ways my ways,” says the Lord.

“For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
So are my ways higher than your ways,
And my thoughts than your thoughts."

Thanks One eyed for posting those reports.

We need blokes like Conca and Vlastuin to really come to the party this year if we are to improve on a really disappointing 2016.
