Best form of Self defence?
« on: January 31, 2006, 08:55:54 PM »
Just trying to get people's opinion on what they think is the best form of self defence to learn.

i have never done any formal typr of training for any type of self defence but i want to start.

Having been thinking about the recent incident i went through on the weekend, i have thought many times that if i was 30 secs earlier i would have caught them in the room and it would have been on.

Being 2 on 1, i may have struggled.

So i want to give myself the best opportunity to be able to handle a situation like that. Hopefully it never eventuates but i want to be prepared all the same.

So please give me your opinion.

I am currently looking at boxing or kick boxing.

Bull - my old boss had done a range of martial arts and the one he found most useful borrowed a lot from eastern techniques but was essentially for real world situations. So there was a whole heap of grappling, hand to hand, kick boxing, fighting with staffs, 2 on 1 situations, 3 on 1 situations (for his black belt he had to fight 3 confirmed black belts one on one for 3 minutes each and then fight all three of them at once for three minutes). He had a week off work after it, but he reckons it was extremely useful training. If you like I can find out exactly what it was called.

Any one of the martial arts - but it is a lot of work - basically tries to teach you reaction without thinking. Very repetitive so takes a lot of training.

Then there is what I would prefer, and that would be the Cartman method - Nothing like a swift kick in the nuts, if your fast and accurate enough it wont matter what the person knows or has.

The best fighters I have known haven't known anything specific - They were just physcho and anything went - try and develop that mentality and your also well on your way also.

Then again in the end the best thing is to walk away - takes more guts than people will give credit for. But even a 14 year old can have half a dozen mates around the corner with knives and basically you'll be fukced. Is it worth it. And one thing I have allways said, doesn't matter how tough you are there will allways be someone tougher.

Jake that sounds a bit like Aikido?

Any Martial Arts takes a number of years to learn properly and you need excellent flexibility. That's why it's best to start when you're a kid. There are basic self-defence courses which a couple of female friends have done but they just teach
you basically to target the eyes, throat and groin so you can then run away.

Then again in the end the best thing is to walk away - takes more guts than people will give credit for. But even a 14 year old can have half a dozen mates around the corner with knives and basically you'll be stuffed. Is it worth it. And one thing I have allways said, doesn't matter how tough you are there will allways be someone tougher.

Wise advice CUB.

Since were not in America though, there are usually a fair few ex-army guys going around who are generally personal trainers/motivators but also specialise in self-defence training, i don't think they're cheap but it might be something you might want to look into!

The best form of defence is attack. Well, so I've heard.
Personally, I've always been a fast runner.  8)

A Doberman. Skitch him on the perp while you head safely in the opposite direction. That way you can walk away from a fight and still get a result.  8)

I am not looking to go around picking fights with anyone.

Its just a thought that has gone through my head that if i did walk into the room while they were still there, more than likely i would have had a crack and they probably would have also.

I hope that i am never caught in that situation but want to prepared if i am so that i can protect my wife and kids if they happen to be with me.

Boxing is a good form of exercise as well as self defence.  A good hit to the chin will put out one's lights.
