Rance to miss Tigers pre-season opener

JAY CLARK,
Herald Sun
Feb 21, 2017

RICHMOND has revealed star backman Alex Rance is managing a hamstring problem and will miss the Tigers’ pre-season opener against Adelaide.

Tigers’ football manager Neil Balme confirmed Rance was suffering hamstring tendonitis but said he was expected to ramp up his training workload soon.

Superstar teammate Dustin Martin is in line to take on the Crows at Etihad Stadium, with the Tigers also keen to unleash their three new recruits.

Balme said midfield hard-nuts Dion Prestia and Josh Caddy and former Sydney ruckman Toby Nankervis were all expected to make their Richmond debuts on Friday night.

However the Tigers will keep Rance on ice for at least another week after missing both of the club’s intra-club matches this month.

He is expected to be available for Richmond’s blockbuster Round 1 clash against Carlton at the MCG on March 23.
Alex Rance poses with Usain Bolt before the Nitro Athletic Series.

“He (Rance) has been looking after a tendonitis thing that he has had,” Balme said.

“He could play (this weekend) if it were a real (regular season) game, but he probably hasn’t done the work to do it (play) yet.

“We are just trying to get him up to speed so he doesn’t have a chronic year.”

A three-time All-Australian, Rance is one of Richmond’s most important and durable players, playing at least 18 games in each of the past six seasons.

He is widely considered the AFL’s premier key defender and has finished first and second in the best-and-fairest award in the past two years.

With Caddy and Prestia in the engine room, Richmond is confident it has the midfield strength to be more competitive this season and is expected to unveil a more aggressive game style.

The two new midfield recruits have impressed in match simulation training and will help lighten the considerable on-ball load on Trent Cotchin and help release Martin back into a midfield-forward role.

Former Gold Coast Sun Prestia was on light duties before Christmas in his recovery from knee surgery but has progressed well since then.

Balme said Prestia, Caddy and Nankervis were all up for selection to take on the Crows.

“They are all all right. We are not going to leave anyone out who is available, so I think they should all be fine (to play),” he said.

“Dion has done a little less work than the others, but he is OK.”

Rookie ruckman Ivan Soldo has been one of Richmond’s big improvers this summer and is expected to push for selection alongside fellow ruckman Nankervis against the Crows.

The 204cm Soldo is the cousin of Richmond ruckman Ivan Maric and had not played Australian Rules before he was signed by the Tigers.

Richmond’s top pick (No.29 overall) in last year’s draft Shai Bolton could miss selection on Friday night despite impressing on the training track with his pace and polish.

Here we go again...now that Lids has gone, they need to find another excuse and Rance is the chosen one.

No, he didn't.

As much as Hardwick says silly things i never once heard him use Lids' injuries as an excuse for losing.

In fact, i would have thought that having the best list since he began coaching at his disposal would have covered Lids' injuries sufficiently.

Just for you champ. I will find some more for you if you like. There are plenty
This from 2 years ago after we got our arses handed to us to the tune of 11 goals by the Dawks:
RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick was last night left to lament another week of “schoolboy errors” after his side was ripped apart by Hawthorn.

Hardwick sat his players down after yesterday’s 66-point thrashing to address the ongoing mistakes that have dragged them to a precarious 2-4 ahead of Sunday’s season-defining clash with Geelong.

He also said the absence of Brett Deledio, Alex Rance and Ivan Maric was a big reason the Tigers were struggling.

Oh, ok. So it wasnt the absence of Brett Deledio in isolation as an excuse but also Rance and Maric.

He also speaks of "ongoing mistakes" as a reason. At that stage, it was generally accepted by most that Richmond would 'struggle' without those players due to our lack of depth. Like i said, Hardwick has said some stupid things, your quote is not one of them.

GR, your trying to convince a bloke you wants to specifically recruit players that go half arsed to look at thinks rationally and logically
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
Nor are your ways my ways,” says the Lord.

“For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
So are my ways higher than your ways,
And my thoughts than your thoughts."
