Time ticking on Tiger playmaker: King

By Ben Casanelia

Former Richmond assistant coach David King says Tiger playmaker Brandon Ellis has four weeks to prove his worth.

“I actually think after four weeks I’d be surprised if he’s in the best 22,” King told The Run Home.

“He’s got a month of football to show why they should keep picking this guy.

“If he wasn’t a first round selection I doubt he would have been given the opportunities he’s been given over the last 12 months.”

Ellis, drafted with the 15th overall selection in 2011, boasts a career average of 22 disposals and has played at least 21 or more games in each of the past five years since debuting in the opening round of 2012.

But King said it’s not ball winning, but distribution that will define the 23-year-olds’career.

“The game is about making quick decisions and some do it better than others, but he’s got to drastically improve,” he said.

“It’s about impact with the ball in hand, limiting turnovers and limiting putting teammates into bad positions.”

Midway through the final quarter of Richmond’s JLT series victory over Adelaide the Tiger wingman had collected 22 disposals for 120 metres gained. The average gain for that number of possessions is 350-plus.

In 2015 Ellis failed to finish top 10 in the best and fairest, despite averaging 26 disposals and playing all 23 matches. He finished seventh last year after averaging 24 touches from 22 appearances.

“He’s a player that should be stepping into a leadership role and not just being a bits and pieces player,” King said.

Ellis’s current streak of 81 consecutive matches dating back to Rd 12, 2013 leads all players at Richmond.

Richmond plays Port Adelaide on Sunday in Mount Gambier before rounding out its pre-season preparations against Collingwood in Moe.

Reading between the lines I'd say Kingy doesn't rate our little blond star.

Seriously though how do you get 22 touches and gain 150m? And that's with our new game style!!

FO Ellis, and take Houli, Hunt, Grigg and Hampson with you.

I don't think he'll ever become anything. Absolutely gutless player, no pride. So soft. All he's good for is running, his possessions are useless.

  • You have to think anyway, so why not think big? DT
I do recall B Ellis was a breakout player way back in the mists of his career.
Poor boy has been infected with Richmonditis.
The only cure is to trade him to Hawthorn.
Seems to have worked for Ty if you believe the media hype.

Put him in the middle as an inside mid and see how he goes. He'll either stay scared and be just as much of a liability or he may not have time to get scared and get a few meaningful possies as he won't have time to kick 15m backwards

This kid is one of Dimmas untouchables.  Has to be playing to the coaches instructions.  Has the attributes to be a good footballer but his career has stalled due to a shambolic game plan .

Is the game plan responsible for his constant contest shirking?

Is the game plan reasonable for his constant contest shirking?

He doesn't need to stop shirking contests to be a good player. He needs to use his running ability to get more ball and use it more effectively when he has it.
Using that tank for defensive pressure would also help.
At the moment, all his running and possessing is on the spot.
"The money might have been better. But, at the end of the day, Richmond showed faith in me. It's only fair that now we're 18th on the ladder, I show the faith back in the club and do everything I can to put them in front. In the end, I'm stoked I made the decision to stay. I f***ing love this club”
