First-year draftee Ryan Garthwaite was named the Tigers' best player after a strong showing in defence, with strong support from Jake Batchelor.

This is what a lot of us Batch fans see that some clearly don't. Jakey could easily have walked away with BOG honours but he always strives to make those around him better and Garthwaite was the beneficiary of that.

If nothing else the big BG can certainly take a big clunk...

He would have fumbled that ball to the ground and landed heavily and that would have been it for the day

Team-mates in the vicinity need to be told to catch him on the way down ffs.

The VFL Report: Round 2

Richmond Development and VFL backline coach, Ryan Ferguson's summary of the AFL and VFL-listed players from Saturday’s win over Sandringham.

AFL LISTED PLAYERS

Taylor Hunt

29 disposals, 18 kicks, 5 marks, 2 tackles

Gave a lot of drive, won a lot of ball on the wing and was important to our structure and leadership. An important player for us on the day.

Corey Ellis

28 disposals, 15 contested possessions, 3 marks, 1 goal

Spent a half down back and started really strongly. Found a lot of the ball, and was clean and composed when the game was a bit chaotic. He was really good with his ball use, and continued his form when he rotated into the midfield, which was great to see.

Jacob Townsend

22 disposals, 17 contested possessions, 7 clearances, 5 tackles

He’s playing outstanding footy. Finding plenty of the ball, lots of clearances, lots of tackles, and his defensive pressure is elite.

Steven Morris

20 disposals, 3 marks, 7 contested possessions, 1 tackle

Provided a lot of experience down back, and was a cool head under pressure. Made some good decisions in a pretty chaotic game.

Tyson Stengle

20 disposals, 11 contested possessions, 3 marks, 2 goals

Lively as always. Racked plenty of disposals up early and was able to find some space and kick a couple of goals. He was a potent threat in the forward line with Shai.

Jake Batchelor

18 disposals, 5 marks, 5 tackles, 7 contested possessions

Another general in our backline. Structured our play, set up our defence and was able to repel plenty of ball.

Ryan Garthwaite

18 disposals, 5 marks, 5 tackles, 4 spoils

Played a breakout game. Had a huge impact with his intercept marks, and his desperation, contest work and fight was outstanding.

Callum Moore

18 disposals, 9 contested possessions, 5 marks, 4 spoils

Cal was used at both ends, so it’s good to know we have that up our sleeve. He started strongly in the forward line, took some contested marks, and when we had a few injuries and needed to plug a hole in the backline, he went on to one of Sandringham’s key forwards and did a tremendous job.

Ben Lennon

11 disposals, 4 marks, 6 inside 50s, 1 goal

Didn’t dominate like he has in previous weeks, but when the game was on the line, took one of the best marks you’ll see going back with the flight. His goal steadied the ship and put some daylight between Sandringham and us in the last quarter when we needed it.

Shai Bolton

10 disposals, 6 contested possessions, 1 mark, 2 goals

Not a huge disposal count, but was very lively. Put on lots of pressure, was hard to contain with our other small forwards. He was a great asset to us in his first game for the club.

Ivan Maric (9 disposals, 23 hitouts, 2 tackles, 1 mark) and Ivan Soldo (8 disposals, 18 hitouts, 4 marks, 1 clearance)

Our two ruckmen worked in tandem and provided a really good contest in the ruck. Their use around the ground and their marking ability helped steady the ship.

Mabior Chol

6 disposals, 4 marks, 4 tackles, 3 goals

He didn’t have many possessions, but still had an impact on the game. He kicked goals, created more with his tackling and forward pressure, and created a contest whenever the ball went near him.

Ben Griffiths (3 disposals, 1 mark, 3 tackles) and
Nathan Drummond (2 disposals, 1 mark)

Both were taken off early with injuries. We wish them the best of luck with their recovery.

VFL LISTED PLAYERS

Sam Darley

26 disposals, 19 kicks, 5 marks, 2 clearances

Our skipper was a general down back. He provided plenty of run and rebound, and used the ball with efficiency.

Brandon Wood

23 disposals, 6 tackles, 7 clearances, 1 goal

Snuck down for a goal, and is always hard to defend. He’s a bull in there, and provided plenty of tackles.

Jake Aarts

22 disposals, 2 clearances, 4 tackles, 1 goal

Plays exactly the way that we want him to play. He’s a hard ball winner, performs team acts, still found plenty of the footy and impacted offensively. He’s in really good form at the moment.

Jacob Ballard

19 disposals, 12 contested possessions, 2 clearances, 1 goal

One of those bulls that we can rely on to win the hard ball. When he goes forward, he’s really hard to match up on, and took a few good marks, which he’s been doing week in, week out.

Daniel Coffield

16 disposals, 8 marks, 2 clearances, 5 inside-50s

Probably the best game we’ve seen him play. He excelled with his intercept marks, had plenty of disposals, used the ball well, and positioned himself really well all day.

Thomas Silvestro

14 disposals, 8 contested possessions, 4 tackles, 2 clearances

Displayed lots of hard running, and put his body on the line. Our half backs love him as he works back hard to support them, and was doing the team things that make him so valuable for us.

Jack Holden

11 disposals, 2 marks, 2 tackles, 1 clearance

It was good to see Jack get amongst it. Considering it was a fairly hectic game at times, it will be great for his experience to be a part of a game that was so intense.

Hugh Beasley

7 disposals, 2 marks, 1 tackle, 1 inside-50

Did an important job on Paddy McCartin. He was really physical, didn’t allow him to do what he wanted, and was able to spoil, repel some balls and take intercept marks.
