I wanted to create a separate thread regarding this. Its been a long time coming.

Every time we lose a game there seems to be an article from the club following a particular 'brand defensive' theme the day after, followed up by supposedly individual players  independent 'take' on the subject on the days to follow early in the week.

This week we have seen releases primarily quoting Dimma on 'learning', following club releases quoting Reiwoldt and Lambert on the same issue.

Are we being taken for a ride?

Do you see it as scripted?

Are other clubs going to these lengths and if not, why not?

Is the RFC treating fans with contempt?

The club seems to be putting an exorbitant amount of effort managing perceptions when disproportionate effort is being put into other areas of the club.

In the context of our membership dollars subsidising the full time jobs (there are many) in the PR department, should the Funding to our PR department be cut and diverted back into spending on the football department?

Its your right. Your say.

It's called damage control.

Maximize membership is priority one.

Someone will always fall for it... :rollin

Hate to tell you this Dooks
No damage control
Minimum increase of memberships from Round 5 onward
And footy department expenditure is capped these days by the AFL

It has to be damage control. If it isn't, then what is it?

It serves no other purpose. Placing spin on less than favourable situations is what many organizations do. That's just fact.

Not just members but sponsorship and club brand (including personell) protection.

Interestingly we take it a bit further than most clubs. To the point the club is trying to ensure fans opinions and expectations are micro-managed. Speaking to various other club supporters on this very issue, with the exception of Essendon in the past, it doesnt happen to the same extent at other clubs.

They seem to be issuing articles for the sake of meeting some target.

The articles that peeve me the most are the ones like we got this week. The ones that follow either or both of two themes.

- We will learn from this and propel them to greater heights
- the players are devastated by the loss but it will propel them to greater heights

To date this has been as effective as the North Korean nuclear arms project

Spin is such a big part of football .

How many times do you hear the coach of a powerhouse team talk up the chances of their lesser like opponent.

Almost every Paul Roos press conference during the 2000s.

Unleash the tornado

Easily the most bizarre whack OER has thrown up this year. I would have granted at least all the posters understand its total PR spin....

How dare the PR department do their jobs? We must be the only club ever to try and use PR to minimize damages after a humiliating loss. Indeed, one look at Hawthorn's current public position shows that they, like their on field department, attack problems openly and honestly and don't mislead their supporters at all with overly optimistic spin....

Great work guys  :wallywink

"The money might have been better. But, at the end of the day, Richmond showed faith in me. It's only fair that now we're 18th on the ladder, I show the faith back in the club and do everything I can to put them in front. In the end, I'm stoked I made the decision to stay. I f***ing love this club”

That's an equally bizarre post - let's just enable people to get paid to say and write bullpoo that NOONE believes in.

^^ More or less the definition of PR. What's your point?
