Damage was done by 3QT: Hardwick

FIGURING out why it took until the last quarter to unleash its best football will dominate the early stages of Richmond's week, rather than dwelling on what might have been.

Coach Damien Hardwick was in a dark mood after watching Fremantle's David Mundy slot an after-the-siren winner to hand his Tigers a third loss in a row and second straight by under a goal.

Brandon Ellis gave Richmond the lead with 21 seconds to go – and sent the Tiger army into raptures – when he kicked its fifth unanswered major in the final term, before Mundy's clincher.

The Tigers' 5-0 start is now a distant memory, with Hardwick's side slumping to seventh spot off the two-point defeat, ahead of a trip to Spotless Stadium to face Greater Western Sydney on Saturday.

Richmond was unlucky not to be closer than the 30-point three-quarter time deficit, given Josh Caddy's goal on the siren was disallowed because of Jack Riewoldt's goal-line block on Joel Hamling.

But Hardwick refused to contemplate hypotheticals, preferring to focus on his players' "pretty poor" first three quarters.

"I couldn't really tell (if the free kick was there). I think we see about 50 goal-line shepherds a game, don't we? Not many of them get paid," Hardwick said.

"But it's probably taking away from the result, really. Fremantle were by bar the better side today. If we had have stolen that game, it was probably a disservice to them, in theory.

"Once again, it's one of those sliding door things. We've got to play better than what we did today."

All Australian defender Alex Rance was the Tigers' sole standout for most of the day until Dustin Martin and Shaun Grigg lifted their ratings with excellent fourth-quarter showings.

An 18-4 inside-50 differential in the final term enabled Richmond to win that statistic 53-45, and it edged the Dockers in contested possessions (138-133), but was badly beaten on the outside.

Bradley Hill and Michael Walters contributed heavily to the visitors' 102 uncontested marks – a number that alarmed Hardwick – and uncontested possession dominance (269-220).

"It's very hard to have a player run with a guy like Brad Hill, who goes from one side of the ground to the other, and they give him the ball at every opportunity," Hardwick said.

"I thought our physicality on him wasn't quite to the level we spoke about before the game and Walters, I thought, had a game out of the blue."

Hardwick was disappointed with his players' intensity and hardness around the contest – in spite of winning the contested ball – but offered some faint praise for their torrid stuff.

"It was over to them, really, (in the last quarter)," he said.

"You throw a few magnets around, but particularly it comes down to your players and what sort of effort and exuberance they want to bring.

"To their credit, they fought their way back into the contest. They didn't get the result, obviously, but we can't play that style of footy.

"For three quarters, I thought we were well down on the way we should have and could have played."

Walters had a game out of the blue? The guys tears us a new one or at least threatens too every time we play them. Was watching the game without sound on my phone for the first half, was like watching a game of keeping off, just couldn't stop them putting 10-15 short passes in a row together zig zagging all over th ground. Very very frustrating.

Stop being so diplomatic towards those scumbag umps. Every week he gives them the benefit of the doubt and look where being nice gets us, give it to the cheats with both barrels, hell if he did that the supporters would probably start a go find me to help pay the fine. Call a spade a spade and ask for a please stuffen explain for the first 8 rounds!

Damien Hardwick press conference

CHRIS CAVANAGH,
Herald Sun
15 May 2017

A SHELL-SHOCKED Richmond coach Damien Hardwick says team changes are coming after his side slipped to a third-straight loss against Fremantle on Sunday at the MCG.

The Tigers entered the game knowing a strong win would see them sitting third on the ladder at the completion of the round but lacked intensity and hunger for most of the day, evidenced by the 21 tackles they laid during the middle two quarters.

The home side slipped as much as 33 points behind in a low-scoring affair after kicking just five goals to three-quarter time before five unanswered goals in a sharp final term saw them hit the front with 21 seconds left on the clock.

But the Dockers won the following centre clearance through Lachie Neale and David Mundy marked in the forward pocket before going back to kick a goal after the siren which won the game.

“I thought our first three quarters were pretty poor,” Hardwick said.

“We didn’t play anywhere near as well as we would have liked, didn’t defend it particularly well and you look at the last 20 seconds and there are some things that we could have done better in that situation, too, but the damage was done in the first three quarters really where we played a pretty poor brand of footy to be honest.”

Hardwick declined to expand on what went wrong in the final seconds, saying only: “They marked it”.

The two-point defeat for the Tigers followed a five-point loss to Western Bulldogs a week earlier and Richmond (5-3) now has a six-day break before tackling Greater Western Sydney (6-2) at Spotless Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Hardwick said tweaks would be made to the side as it tries to wrestle back the momentum that it had after five wins to start the season.

“We’ve got a few decisions to make,” Hardwick said.

“Some boys played well in the VFL squad so we’ll made some changes and take a good side up there and try and get the four points.”

Hardwick was dejected at the loss but mindful that a victory would have been an injustice to Fremantle.

"Fremantle were by far the better side if we had have stolen that game it was probably a disservice to them in theory," Hardwick said.

"Our first three quarters were pretty poor, we didn't play anywhere near what we would have liked, didn't defend it particularly well and you look at the last 20 seconds and there were things we could have done better in that situation too. But the damage was done in the first thee quarters where we played a pretty poor brand of footy."

Richmond had just eight tackles in the third quarter and lacked effort around the ball as Fremantle kicked four goals to nothing for the term.

"I thought we fumbled all day. Once again you fumble they get to tackle, you don't and the ball goes the other way.

"I think we won the contested ball but it was a hollow victory really I thought it painted over a few cracks of our hardness around the contest which was disappointing."

400 touches at 78% to Freo.
70 more effective possessions
50 more uncontested
34 of them marks

Says it all really.

Lazy and stupid.
"The money might have been better. But, at the end of the day, Richmond showed faith in me. It's only fair that now we're 18th on the ladder, I show the faith back in the club and do everything I can to put them in front. In the end, I'm stoked I made the decision to stay. I f***ing love this club”

The Damage was done at the selection table Dimwit

We were in trouble from the moment Batchelor, C Ellis Elton, Castagna and Houli lined up in the ones rather than Lloyd, Miles, Bolton, Menadue and Garth

If those 5 played we win that game

This was a match we were expected to win. On paper we had the better side. It was our home ground. We lost it because of the lack of effort by the team as a whole and by poor coaching. We should never have let Freo get such a lead at three quarter time. The fact that they were allowed to get such a lead is really concerning. Any analysis of the team's performance by the team should be focused on their efforts throughout the game and why they allowed themselves to get into such a position at third quarter time.
