AFLW stars embrace 'underdog' status of Richmond expansion side

Anthony Colangelo
The Age
26 Nov 2015

On a historic evening at one of the country's most historic sporting clubs, as their AFLW side gathered for their first ever full pre-season training session at Punt Road Oval, two of Richmond's star recruits were relishing being the underdogs for once.

Sabrina Frederick and Katie Brennan are used to having pressure on their shoulders heading into AFLW seasons - Frederick at Brisbane playing in two grand finals and Brennan at the Western Bulldogs as captain - but with expansion side Richmond, a premiership is not such a heavy focus in their inaugural season.

That change of emphasis or expectation seems to have renewed the vigour within Frederick and Brennan, two of the league's best players, who became Tigers in the off-season.

"Anything is possible," Brennan said. "We go in as the underdogs and the unknown so over the next few weeks we will figure out what success means to us and we have certainly got an amazing blueprint at this club … we certainly are inspired by that."

Frederick added: "It’s always a challenge. We are both competitors and I am sure the rest of the team would say the same. It’s just nice to be in a different position and go back to the start, where the basics are, and just put in the work for your team and really work hard.

"It is kind of nice being on this side [as underdogs] and hopefully we can get some real results out of it."

Richmond's football boss Neil Balme said the club had been enhanced by the injection of fresh faces.

"This is a change, it is different," Balme said. "It’s silly to say men and women are different but their attitude to footy is different. They’re so positive, so grateful for the opportunity to play.

"We are very excited about it.

"The men have been around forever. And what we all need to do in our specific roles is allow the women to have the advantage of the experience we have had, so they don’t have to learn it all over again."

Brennan and Frederick said they felt at ease within the club, and that they had everything they needed to improve their football individually, and play well as a team.

"We are not here to make up the numbers, we are here to compete. But just having fun doing so, the Richmond way of playing football is so fun," Frederick said.

Tigers could have AFLW games moved

Anna Harrington
AAP
26 Nov 2019

Amid an era of success that has seen Richmond's fanbase skyrocket to new levels, the AFL powerhouse may have to move two scheduled AFLW games away from Punt Road.

Richmond will open the AFLW season with a home game against the Blues at Carlton's Ikon Park to maximise attendance, but are scheduled to play the Kangaroos and Brisbane at their far smaller traditional home in round three and round seven respectively.

At Richmond's inaugural AFLW training session on Monday night, football boss Neil Balme said the Tigers were in discussion with the AFL over whether Punt Road would be able to host games.

"That's a genuine challenge, because we're not really set up for big crowds," Balme said.

"That'll be something we're actually talking to the AFL now about as to whether we can really play games here or not.

"We're programmed to have a couple but we're really looking at that to make sure we can provide what they think we can provide."

Balme emphasised Punt Road's foremost role these days was as a training ground, rather than as a match venue.

"We'd love to play some games here but I'm not sure whether that will happen or not," he said.

The Tigers recruited hard ahead of their first season - poaching Western Bulldogs pair Katie Brennan and Monique Conti, along with snaring former Brisbane ruck/forward Sabrina Frederick.

"Anything's possible," Brennan said.

"I think we go in as underdogs and the unknowns so I think over the next few weeks we'll figure out what success means to us.

"We've certainly got an amazing blueprint from this club and what the AFL boys, the VFL boys and our wheelchair team have been able to achieve this year and we certainly are inspired by that and will put in a lot of work to be able to get there."

Molan aims to learn from Richmond's stars in bid for midfield spot

Anthony Colangelo
The Age
7 December 2019

“It was an interesting task [playing on Brennan] I had never played on someone in that way but I had to find a different way to beat her because she was a lot stronger than me physically but It was a good tussle.”

The Ballarat-born-and-bred former basketballer also remembers her first experience of playing against Richmond's formidable recruit from the Brisbane Lions, Sabrina Frederick.

"The first time we [VFLW Bulldogs] played them [VFLW Tigers] during the year I went to pick up the ball and she was bee-lining straight at me, she bumped me but barely touched me and I was knocked over anyways. I am looking forward to playing with her," Molan said.

So what does Molan, primarily a midfielder who can also play forward, hope to learn from Richmond's stars and their coaching group then?

“Over the next few weeks before round one I want to get a lot stronger in the gym and improve my aerobic fitness so I can hopefully run out games in the midfield as well as just develop the craft with the awesome midfield group and the staff around that," she said.

"So hopefully cement a spot in there for round one but we will just have to see what happens.

“I have always been described as quite a versatile player having backline experience and lately as a forward so I would be happy to play wherever the coaches want me. I just want to be out on the field with the girls."

Molan completed her VCE this year and is waiting on her results. She will take a gap year to focus on footy and part-time work but hopes to one day study exercise science and maybe become a teacher or a coach.

She coached her school's junior footy team for the last three years with one of her best friends and has moved from Ballarat to Richmond for the AFLW season.

“It’s pretty incredible being here," she said. "Moving down to Richmond recently the night before the first official training session. My host family live in Richmond, it’s crazy like everyone is a mad Richmond supporter around here, including them, their door is painted like a Richmond jumper and nearby there’s a mural of Cotch [Trent Cotchin] and Damien Hardwick holding the premiership cup on the back of their garage.

“It was hard leaving [her family in Ballarat for the first time] but I’ll go back on weekends and whenever I get a chance and see my three younger brothers.

“There were a few tears. I got a hug from my brothers which usually doesn’t happen."

She became a midfielder at the Greater Western Victoria Rebels when coach Rhys Cair asked her to move out of the backline. Ballarat's influence will remain close for her first season at the top level with her former under-12s basketball coach Laura Bailey also playing at Richmond.

“She has checked up on me the whole way through and kept seeing how I was during the draft and speaking to me to see how I was which was really great," Molan said.
