Dusty as a Don? Bombers keen on Tiger gun

ESSENDON is interested in Dustin Martin, and has spoken about pursuing the Richmond star via free agency.

Speaking to SEN, Bombers CEO Xavier Campbell didn't deny a report on Fox Footy that the club could join the race to lure Martin, who is set to become a restricted free agent at season's end.

North Melbourne is reportedly poised to offer Martin a huge contract worth more than $1 million per season, while St Kilda has also been linked to the out-of-contract Tigers midfielder.

"I think there's a lot of football clubs that have probably spoken about Dustin Martin and what they feel he could add to their football program," Campbell said.

"We're like most others where at list management we spend a lot of time talking about a whole range of players and what they could bring to our footy club.

"It's very preliminary stages with Dustin, and there's other players – no doubt like Dustin – they can add enormous value.

"We’re open to exploring all those ways that we can add value to our list, and we'll continue those discussions.

"We certainly haven't been to the point where it's been raised anywhere outside list management or certainly at a board level – when it gets to the free agency market, that's a pretty pivotal part of the process.

"Dustin's a super talent and he's a genuine match-winner, and we'll see what happens."

Martin's management has told Richmond the 25-year-old reigning club champion won't make a decision on his future until after the season.

Dustin Martin trade, free agency rumours: Essendon interested, North Melbourne, Richmond

KATE SALEMME,
Herald Sun
25 May 2017

ESSENDON has thrown its hat into the ring to lure Richmond star Dustin Martin.

Bombers chief executive Xavier Campbell has confirmed the club has discussed the possibility of Martin joining the club but those talks are in “preliminary stages”.

Martin is one of the hottest targets in the free agency pool this year alongside Fremantle star Nat Fyfe and is in no rush to sign a new deal with the Tigers.

“Dustin is a super talent. He’s a genuine match-winner and we’ll see what happens,” Campbell told SEN.

“We certainly haven’t been to a point where it’s been raised outside list management or at a board level and when it gets to the free agency market, that’s a pretty pivotal part of the process.

“It’s very preliminary stages with Dustin and there’s other players that no doubt, like Dustin, they could add enormous value.

“We’re open to exploring all those ways we can add value to our list and we’ll continue those discussions.”

Essendon’s interest in the 25-year-old comes after reports emerged this week North Melbourne’s list management team has been given the green light by the club’s board to table an offer to Martin.

The Kangaroos are set to be an aggressive player in the trade and free agency period, with the club also offering a mega nine-year deal to GWS young gun Josh Kelly.

Coach Brad Scott on Tuesday night wouldn’t be drawn on the possibility of luring Martin to Arden St but said his club will be aggressive in its bid to attract players from rival clubs.

“It’s a complete hypothetical,” Scott told AFL360. “I understand the speculation and the interest in it but I think it’s a little unsavoury for us to be talking directly about players who are contracted to other clubs right at the moment.

“We’ve made no secret we want to be really aggressive and bold in our approach to our list management.”

Richmond president Peggy O’Neal has said the Tigers have no issue with Martin exploring his free agency options.

Essendon put out this rumour the week before we play them in a vain attempt to unsettle the team.

So Essendon think Dusty's a good player and would like him in their team.  Is there a team in the comp who would say any different?  Just no CEO has come out and said it publicly.  Means nothing and the position is no different to what it was yesterday, last week, last month etc etc

Any club not trying to poach Dusty is crazy, says Hardwick (afl site)

Any club not trying to poach Dusty is crazy, says Hardwick

afl.com.au
25 May 2017

RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick has no problem with Essendon publically signaling its interest in Dustin Martin, saying clubs would be crazy not to explore poaching the midfielder as he approaches free agency.

Bombers' CEO Xavier Campbell this week spoke publicly about the club's interest in pursuing Martin, who is set to become a restricted free agent at the end of the season.

Campbell said talks about luring Martin to Tullamarine were at a preliminary stage internally, with the Bombers joining North Melbourne in being linked to the Tigers' club champion.

Asked if he found the Bombers' declaration of interest unsavoury ahead of Saturday night's Dreamtime clash between the clubs, Hardwick said the interest generated in free agents was what the AFL wanted.

"He's a good player. He's always going to get linked [to other clubs] … we're reasonably placed with where it's at," the coach said.

"He's been a good player for a long period of time and any club that's not speaking to him is crazy as far as I'm concerned.

"From my point of view it's what the AFL wants. They want it front and centre, they want their brand on the back page of papers.

"Dustin's an outstanding player so he's going to create this sort of attention. It's just part and parcel of the industry we're in."

Hardwick said talks between Martin's management and Richmond's list management team, led by Dan Richardson, were ongoing and the club was comfortable with its position.

Influential Essendon coterie figure has close links to Dustin Martin and the Bombers are interested

MICHAEL WARNER,
Herald Sun
25 May 2017

THE man who lured dual Geelong premiership coach Mark “Bomber” Thompson back to Essendon has close links to superstar Richmond free agent Dustin Martin.

Wealthy property developer and influential Essendon coterie figure Mark Casey - the brother of former Tigers president Clinton Casey — is a friend and confidant of Martin.

Casey brokered the deal that saw Thompson sensationally quit as Cats coach in October 2010 and return to Essendon as a senior assistant under James Hird.

Third favourite for this year’s Brownlow Medal behind Geelong’s Patrick Dangerfield and Adelaide’s Rory Sloane, Martin has previously turned to Casey for advice in property deals.

Bombers chief executive Xavier Campbell confirmed on Wednesday his club had discussed the possibility of recruiting Martin.

“It’s very preliminary stages with Dustin ... (but) he’s a genuine matchwinner and we’ll see what happens,” Campbell said.

Essendon officials on Thursday played down their interest in Martin but Thompson warned the Tigers not to leave themselves open to a raid.

“There are some very influential people in and around Essendon that can be very hard to say no to,” Thompson told the Herald Sun.

Thompson and Essendon list boss Adrian Dodoro pocketed $6.92 million each in March after the sale of a land development scheme at Armstrong Creek, between Torquay and Geelong.

Casey, who controlled the other 51 per cent of the project, made $14 million.

Martin, 25, is managed by music industry stalwart Ralph Carr and has put off contract talks with the Tigers until the end of the season.

Asked for an update this week Carr said: “I’ve got no comment in the terrible fright that I might be misquoted”.

Martin will command more than $1 million a year on the open market but is considered likely to stay at Punt Rd if the price is right.

The powerful, goalkicking midfielder will earn a relatively modest $630,000 this season.

North Melbourne has also expressed interest in making a major play for Martin.

Richmond can increase its own offer thanks to a 20 per cent player pay rise set to be agreed by the AFL Players’ Association and the league.

A figure close to Martin said the star midfielder had backed himself in to produce a career season despite speculation on his future.

“He wants a five-year deal and if Richmond steps up to the plate he’s more than happy to stay,” the figure said on Thursday.

“His form has been outstanding and would warrant being paid like one of the top players in the league.

“But he just wants to play footy and is leaving all of this to Ralph.”

Martin finished third in last year’s Brownlow and won the Jack Dyer Medal as the Tigers’ best and fairest.

Richmond president Peggy O’Neal has declared she has no issue with Martin or his manager exploring free agency options.

“We have been quite clear that we are comfortable with Dustin and his management taking the time they need to make a decision on his future,” O’Neal said.

“The dealings throughout this process have been professional on both sides and the communications between the club and his manager Ralph Carr have been constructive.

“Free agency rules have changed the football landscape enormously. As a result, there is always significant speculation around player movement, particularly high-profile players.

“It is something that we have to get used to as uncomfortable as that can be.

“We have repeatedly said that we want Dustin to be a part of our club long-term and that is the outcome we are working towards. We remain confident that will be the case but, equally, we haven’t put any deadline on reaching an agreement.”

Casey is a former president of the Essendonians supporters group.

Lead on from that, IMO, Thompson probably had half a hand in the drug situation...

As posted in the other thread, Dusty, in an online chat with his best mate Dane Swan, has called all these media articles and talk about him going to North and Essendon as "BS" and 'fake news'

RE-SIGNING out-of-contract forward Joe Daniher should be Essendon's focus ahead of trying to lure Richmond star Dustin Martin to the club, according to coach John Worsfold.
