Trading into the second round
« on: July 12, 2017, 07:29:11 PM »
What are people's opinions about trading out a player to get into the second round of the draft for insurance to land Naish or for a second lowish pick to nab another tall option. For example:

Shane Edwards for a pick in the 20s
Lennon for a pick in the 20s (if he s not going to get a game then may as well trade)
Ellis
Grigg

Thoughts?

Add Miles to the list for the same reason you mentioned Lennon.

None of the players mentioned would achieve a 2nd rounder, the exception being Ellis if this seasons form continues.

Would have to trade an Astbury type.

We need a massive clean out IMO.
Way to many players that have no "potential" improvement in them.
FTO!

I'd trade Titch, BEllis, CEllis, Lennon, Houli, Grigg, Conca, Miles (8)

I'd delist Maric, Hunt, Hampson, Batchelor, Townsend, Griffiths, Lloyd, Morris, Elton. (9)

Get in a couple of FA (Reid and Casboult) and trade for Jake Lever and then draft kids.

Our best 22 would still be a finals side while we develop the kids on our list and the new crop.

Unfortunately this may not be the year to have a massive clean out.
It's a very skinny draft that dosn't extend much past the first round.
In saying that players like Miles should fetch better than average picks, I wouldn't be surprised if we could get a high to mid 2nd round pic for a B.Ellis or Miles.
Aside from that I just don't think we have much more offer.
I think you'll see us go hard for free agents, use one of our two first round pics in a trade and only take 3 picks to the draft.
I very much doubt we'll make any more than 5 changes tops (of course all this may change if Dusty leaves!)
Watch this space..........

Trade......Miles (2nd round pick)
Delist.....Townsend, Elton, Hunt
Retire.....Maric

Why would anyone trade for Miles  because he not in the top 10 money earners and will be uncontracted at years end.  North Melb. could pick him up as an uncontracted player in the preseason draft.

The side is only 2 wins above 11th spot. It's good to be currently top 4 yet there lots of room to improve.    :pray

I would like to keep miles if possible. Good depth

Why would anyone trade for Miles  because he not in the top 10 money earners and will be uncontracted at years end.  North Melb. could pick him up as an uncontracted player in the preseason draft.

Furthermore, excluding his contractual situation for the moment, if we can't fit Miles into our team, why would we expect he is worth a second round pick anyway?

I don't see Miles being kept out of the team because their are better players now getting a game ahead of him on the depth chart and he has played well enough at VFL level, so I can't see an unknown injury being the reason. I am not convinced that our midfield this year as a unit has really developed to any great extent. I feel that Cotchin and Martin have lifted their games to new levels and Nankervis had given us a real ruck option for the first time since Maric was killing it, and this has compensated for a lack of midfield depth (we'd be stuffed if any of these guys got injured).

So who gives us a second round pick for him? Second round picks for teams outside the 8 are still likely to be in the 20-30 range, so they have a fair bit of value, and if Miles can't crack a game with us what would he offer another current  top 8 side that would be worth a late second rounder?

The only real option I can see is that another top 8 side needs some cap space and is looking for some cheap cover, which I think Miles would be. But the two teams that would seem to be struggling with cap space at the moment are Sydney and us (assuming Dusty re-signs). I believe Miles has been linked with Sydney, but I still don't see many teams coughing up a second rounder for depth. And if that was the case, we'd be silly to trade him anyway because we potentially have a similar problem.

Unless we can royally screw them over, we should NEVER deal with the Scum Cheats ever again.  :banghead
