Rioli has been the most disappointing player on our list this year in my opinion when you take into account the potential upside.
He has gotten so far ahead of himself it's comical.
He needs to be taken down a few notches and dumping him to the reserves would do that. Hardwick thinks he is teaching him but all he is doing is teaching him the inexplicable preformances are ok. Menadue was a star last week compared to Rioli but guess who gets dropped.
If he was at the Bulldogs or Hawthorn he would have been banished a month ago.
Add that to the 2 close losses where he made crucial mistakes and his year has been one to forget.

I'm glad he has signed for another 2 years but don't let that cloud the fact he has been putrid this year.

Daniel Rioli re-signs with Richmond until the end of 2019

KATE SALEMME,
Herald Sun
15 July 2017

RICHMOND has locked away exciting small forward Daniel Rioli for a further two years.

The new deal will see the 20-year-old remain at Punt Rd until at least the end of 2019.

Rioli has come on in leaps and bounds this season and has been an integral player in the Richmond resurgence, forming part of a ‘mosquito fleet’ — alongside Dan Butler and Jason Castagna — inside forward 50 that has transformed the team’s form.

“I’m really excited to remain at Richmond for at least another two years,” Rioli said.

“I have loved this football club from day one and it was an easy decision to re-sign.”

Rioli has booted 13 goals so far this season and is averaging 10.1 disposals per game.

In his 33 career games Rioli has shown similar traits to his cousin, Hawthorn star Cyril Rioli, since making his debut in Round 1 last year.

“Daniel is an exciting, young player and he has a very bright future ahead of him,” Richmond talent manager Dan Richardson said.

“Daniel is clearly a talented footballer, but he also brings much more to our football club.

“He is passionate about sharing his culture and educating his teammates, as well as the broader football community.”

By extending his stay at the Tigers the Rioli legacy continues in yellow and black after the forward’s great uncle Maurice Rioli won two best and fairest and a Norm Smith Medal with Richmond in the 1980s.

He has gotten so far ahead of himself it's comical.

I don't think this is fair as I don't think it's the case. I think he is dead set trying and knows he's got to perform better but he just isn't able to at the moment which I think is making things worse. He used to not get much of it but when he did good things could happen. Now when he gets the ball I wait for the inevitable stuff up.

Add that to the 2 close losses where he made crucial mistakes and his year has been one to forget.

What mistakes were they? I know he came off the wing against Freo but I'm not sure if he's completely to blame for that. Yes he should have been smarter and positioned himself in a better spot but I wonder who told him to go there or if anyone told him to go otherwise. I imagine he was just a kid following instructions and no one told him otherwise. What was the other though?

Btw I agree with your last point

The other one was when he dropped a simple chest mark that eventually went out of bounce with us going forward with less than a minute to play against GWS I think it was.

Just watching the Melbourne/Adelaide game and they just mentioned Jeff Gartlet has kicked 31 goals for the year. A player they got for pick 60 odd, and most Richmond fans get excited when Rioli just gets a kick. Because his name is Rioli and because he is an early draft pick he keeps getting games when form clearly doesn't warrant it. He didn't have a kick in 3 quarters of footy last week and ended up with 2 for the game. That is just unfathomable imo.

I'm sick of this club having double standards, and we wonder why our culture is the worst in the AFL.

i personally thought garlett was a steal. It was at a time when we really needed a type like him.

I for one thought he was going to spend more time in the magoos over the first couple of years.
So based on that he's well ahead of where I thought he would be, still he has petered off and some time back in the seconds wouldn't hurt. Besides Bolton is like bashing the door down right now, maybe his turn for a bit!
Starting to get some nice depth and wrapped he has signed gunna be a gun don't worry about that.

Don't get me wrong, I like Rioli and think he will be a good player for us. I'm not sold on him being as good as his cousin but happy he has committed to the club.
I hope he comes out today and kicks a bag and then his position wouldn't need to be spoken about.

Garlett is almost 28. Rioli is 20. Garlett is a different player. He is a genuine goal sneak. I see Rioli eventually moving into the midfield, something Garlett doesn't offer. We can get at least 12 more years out of Rioli. Yes he was a steal, I agree, but there are 16 other clubs that also missed out on getting him so we are not alone.
OER. Calling it as it is since 2004.

Here we go...
Rioli was considered by us the 15 best kid in the country but you want to make excuses for him for his performances this year??
How are they different players? They both are playing the same position??
We will end up with 4 or 5 small forward that combined goal tally will be the same as a pick 60 odd??
He we never be a mid either, so don't kid yourself. He doesn't know how to get enough footy to be a mid. He is a small forward that at the moment that doesn't kick goals but even worse doesn't really even contribute other than tackling.
I compared the two last night because their rolls are the same presently, you can cloud that with whatever you like but the facts are we have a pick 15 that poo.

So I guess the other question is did we give up too much for him with pick 15 just because his name was Rioli?
Ryan Burton would be pretty handy about now.

At the age of 19-20 Garlett averaged 9.4 possessions a game and 1.2 goals. Rioli averages 10.2 disposals and 0.9 goals per game this year....
