Damien Hardwick praises Dustin Martin after Tigers’ win over GWS

JON RALPH,
Herald Sun
23 July 2017

DAMIEN Hardwick says his Tigers have learnt the lessons of this year’s agonising losses after climbing into the top four.

Hardwick had promised Richmond “owed them one” against Greater Western Sydney after an earlier last-gasp loss and they duly delivered.

The Tigers rebounded from a 20-point quarter time deficit, with Hardwick lauding the influence of leaders Dustin Martin, Trent Cotchin, Alex Rance and Jack Riewoldt.

Hardwick confirmed Bachar Houli will come straight back into the senior team from a stuff suspension against Gold Coast (Metricon Stadium).

But he said Ben Griffiths had dislocated his shoulder in his first minute of game time against Collingwood in the VFL.

Hardwick had been desperate to get Griffiths back into the senior team after concussion issue but the key forward faces a further stint on the sidelines and possibly surgery.

The Tigers coach said Richmond had wrested back momentum after Toby Greene’s first-quarter strike on Alex Rance saw a GWS kick at goal overturned.

Perched in the top four, the Tigers now have a launching pad to try to gain a double chance in September.

A Josh Kelly goal early in the last term saw nervous Tiger fans wonder if it might happen again but Hardwick said those losses had brought growth.

“We spoke about it on Saturday. Some of those scars you get, you come back stronger and I think that’s what we learnt,’’ he said.

“Sometimes as a side the lessons you learn are the best when you are at your worst.

“We will have a stage where those games are close again and we will have learnt some good things from that.

“We set up a little bit better, we were prepared to lose inside to make sure we managed the contest outside and it stopped our scoring a little bit but they didn’t get goals over the back.

“They got one early and it made me a little bit nervous but the players fulfilled it pretty well and I thought we held up really strongly in the end.”

Martin surely polled another three Brownlow Medal votes after 31 touches, 11 clearances and a goal.

He and Trent Cotchin were instrumental in stopping the rot in the second quarter, Hardwick lauding Martin’s consistent brilliance.

“He has been in the system for eight years not and he is a guy who has improved every year. It’s a credit to him and the work he does.

“He takes care of himself, I would love to say I have had a massive contribution to it, but he’s just a bloody good player.”

“Our intensity was a little off and then I thought in the second and third quarters we controlled proceedings. Martin and Cotchin and Alex Rance and Jack Riewoldt responded really well in the second quarter which got us going.”

Houli has just had a daughter — his second child — after spending four weeks suspended, but won’t come back through the VFL.

“He will come in. Who goes out (I am not sure). He is a pretty good player, Bachar.”

Anthony Miles injured his knee at training on Friday and will likely miss another week, with replacement Corey Ellis impressive in patches.

Harsh lessons paying off for Tigers: Dimma

THE HARSH lessons learned early in the season are starting to pay off for Richmond, coach Damien Hardwick says, after the Tigers moved into the top four with a crucial win against Greater Western Sydney on Sunday.

Consecutive losses to the Western Bulldogs (five points), Fremantle (two) and GWS (three) between rounds seven and nine threatened to derail the Tigers' season, but they could instead prove the making of a strong run to the finals.

Hardwick said they were hard lessons to learn but they could prove invaluable, with a more disciplined approach to running out games evident once they took a match-winning lead against the Giants on Sunday.

"We spoke about it on Saturday. It's like some of those scars you get, you come back stronger. I think that's what we've learned," a proud Hardwick said.

"Sometimes, as disappointing as it is, the lessons you learn are often best when you're at your worst.

"There's going to be a stage where those games become close again and we will have learnt some lessons from those. Hard at the time, but long-term (they're) invaluable."

Richmond built a 26-point lead deep in the third quarter on Sunday, but it was cut to 14 with less than five minutes to play in the final term after back-to-back goals from the Giants.

That's when the lessons learned earlier in the season came to the fore, with the Tigers avoiding a repeat of the round nine result, which saw GWS steam home with three goals in time-on.

"We probably set up a bit better and we were prepared to lose inside to manage the outside," Hardwick said when asked to compare his team's two fourth quarters against the Giants.

"That probably stemmed our scoring a little bit but we were just making sure we didn't concede goals over the back.

"I think they got one pretty early in the last which made me a little bit nervous.

"But credit where credit's the due, the players fulfilled it pretty well and I thought we held up really strongly in the end."

Hardwick praised the performance of his superstar midfielder Dustin Martin, who had double figure clearances (11) and inside 50s (10) for the second straight week to go with his 31 possessions (17 contested).

Martin lifted after a quiet four-possession first quarter, turning the game in his team's favour with the support of captain Trent Cotchin (27 possessions and seven tackles).

The coach was also pleased with young midfielder Corey Ellis, who earned a late call-up to cover Anthony Miles (knee) and showed class with his nine possessions and three inside 50s.

The Tigers were hopeful Miles would only miss one or two matches after suffering a minor medial ligament strain at training on Friday.

Ben Griffiths will also return to the injury list after suffering a dislocated shoulder in the VFL, continuing a luckless run for the big man, who has suffered extensive concussion issues this season.

"It's disappointing because I watched him last week and he looks a class above VFL level," Hardwick said.

"You start to get him back in your side and his magnet starts to make its way to your board and then this happens.

"I hope for the sake of Ben it's not too serious, but I'll touch base with him later tonight. He's an important player for our group."

Hardwick said half-back Bachar Houli will come straight into the 22 to face Gold Coast next Saturday night at Metricon Stadium after serving a four-match suspension.

Richmond face selection squeeze with Bachar Houli return says Tigers coach Damien Hardwick

Daniel Cherny
The Age 24 July 2017

Richmond are back in the top four and facing a selection squeeze ahead of their meeting with Gold Coast at Metricon Stadium next Saturday night after a stirring come-from-behind win against a flagging Greater Western Sydney at a wet MCG on Sunday.

The Tigers though can almost taste a return to the September action after they overcame a goalless first quarter to kick nine of the 12 majors from that point, securing a 19-point win.

The victory came on the back of another stellar showing from Brownlow medal fancy Dustin Martin, who finished with 31 disposals, 11 clearances and a goal. Tigers captain Trent Cotchin, gun backman Alex Rance and key forward Jack Riewoldt were also lauded by coach Damien Hardwick for their work in turning the tide following Richmond's slow start.

"It was certainly not a game we'll go and get back out of the archives, but from an intensity and effort [point of view] I thought it was terrific," Hardwick said.

"I was really impressed with Trent and Dustin and Alex and Jack. Those guys responded really well in the second quarter which got us going.

"We played a really good side today, and we managed to scrap home, which is really impressive."

Hardwick also suggested that the Tigers had learnt from their capitulation against the Giants earlier in the season in which they coughed up a 31-point third quarter lead to lose in the dying seconds. "Some of those scars you get, you come back stronger," he said.

"I think that's what we've learnt. Sometimes as disappointing as it is, the lessons that you learn are often best when you're at your worst."

Despite his side being contention to finish in the top four for the first time since 2001, Hardwick would not get carried away.

"I'm really impressed with our players and where they're at. But we've still got a long journey in front of us I feel," he said.

Tigers are set to welcome back defender Bachar Houli next weekend following his four-match suspension for striking Carlton's Jed Lamb, but the coach was coy about who may make way from the winning combination.

"It's early to say, but he's an important player to us, he's an elite half-back stuff, so he will come back in," Hardwick said.

"Who goes out is probably the difficult thing, we've got some players that have played really well in those roles."

Hardwick added that Houli had handled his much-publicised absence well. "He's very low-maintenance, he's terrific to have around the place."

The Tigers coach also believes fringe on-baller Anthony Miles would miss no more than a fortnight after being a late withdrawal from Sunday's game because of a knee issue. The weekend was soured slightly for the top-four ascendents by a dislocated shoulder suffered by forward Ben Griffiths while playing in the VFL on Sunday. The big man - who had only recently returned from concussion - is set to be assessed.

I actually disagree.

"We probably set up a bit better and we were prepared to lose inside to manage the outside," Hardwick said when asked to compare his team's two fourth quarters against the Giants.

"That probably stemmed our scoring a little bit but we were just making sure we didn't concede goals over the back."

I think by going into "save the game" mode we could have been run over at the end. I still wonder at disbelief why if we play a sensational brand of football for 2nd/3rd quarter you would completely abandon it and "make sure you don't concede." I want to see us win by 10 goals damn it.

same, I just dont understand the logic. We pantsed them 42 inside 50's to 15 in the 2nd and 3rd qtrs, absolutely smashed them! why would we go away from that?
