Richmond coach Damien Hardwick raised eyebrows when he chose not to bring in a tall forward to replace Jack Riewoldt, who was sidelined by a nasty scratched cornea. It was left to ruckman Toby Nankervis to play as the sole big man up inside 50, with Hardwick backing his ever-growing mosquito fleet to get the job done. The silky Daniel Rioli hit the ground running, kicking three goals in the first quarter. Nankervis himself kicked three goals in the second term, including an unlikely snap over his shoulder on the goalline that surprised the man himself. Shai Bolton and Dan Butler harassed beautifully at ground level, Jason Castanga kicked three as well, while Josh Caddy was good at times coming out of the goal-square against his former side. Dustin Martin and Kane Lambert rounded out the seven smalls in a victory for the little guys.

I thought it worked well - although let's not forget it was against GC.  Nank looked dangerous, Caddy did to although both wasted easy opportunities and the small fellas were as lively as ever. Was good to see Nank play predominantly fwd and Soldo taking most of the ruck duties

Why was it Hardwick's decision not to bring in cover for Jack? I thought we had a selection committee for this type of stuff.

Sure Dimma would have a reasonable say in things as coach, but surely it wasn't just his call?

The Tigers can kick goals without Jack

It's not the way Damien Hardwick would like to find out, but Jack Riewoldt's freakish eye injury gave the Tigers coach a rare chance to see how his forward line would function without the star marksman. The last time Richmond lined up without Riewoldt was round 23, 2013 and the 28-year-old has missed just one match since 2010. Minus Steven May, Rory Thompson and Kade Kolodjashnij, the Suns' defence might not have been the stiffest opposition, but Richmond showed some variation that might open a few more doors come September – and make them a little less predictable. From 45 inside 50s they took 17 marks and generated 28 scoring shots – good efficiency in anyone's language. Toby Nankervis provided a decent target in Riewoldt's absence, while Jason Castagna, Josh Caddy and silky Daniel Rioli (three goals each) were all marking threats in the forward 50. Riewoldt is expected back next week, but the Tigers now have a host of mobile targets their midfield can hit up. - Michael Whiting

we kicked just 14 goals against the 15th placed team missing half their team who were down to just one on the bench if ever you were going to kick 20 plus goals in a match this should have been it but hey lets all be happy with 14.

Nankervis move did not work  and yeah i know he kicked three goals all pretty well opportunistic  he took just one mark for the game although he did compete in the air and helped the little blokes in this way.
Whats disappointing is GCS had just the two tall defenders both 19y olds and the tallest at 191cm and all we got was 1 uncontested mark out of Nankervis.
Had 11 touches and 6 of them were clangers if it was not for that purple patch in the second quarter his game would have been awful.
To make matters worse Soldo is no where near as effective in the ruck as Toby or when the ball hits the ground  and he is Hampson like in possesions marks etc.

Was going to lambast the standard again but fmd i went to the Eagles and Brisbane game on sunday,  Free tickets  the only reason, and what a lamentable standard  to have to sit through.
Will never go to another game again  where the tigers are not playing. What was amasing is the delusion of wce supporters applauding what was in reality mediocrity at just about its worst.  Yep they won by 70 odd points but they are not winning anything with that standard of play.  So i thought id leave us alone on that front this week.

Okay at the risk of copping crap perhaps didnt work is the wrong way to say it but when you look at the opposition and who he was up against  goals aside which all happened in a very short period he was  well not disappointing but pretty average  imo.

I ask myself what could have happened if riewoldt had played you would back him him in for a minimum 5 goals  and plenty of marks againt what gcs offered up.
Nankervis  was up against babys  and short skinny  ones at that for kpps, and he didnt take a contested mark.If he was a good fwd he should have had a field day.

People are content because it was a win but very few are asking what should have been or could have been with just a little more structure.Plus no one is asking what we lose when he is not in the ruck.
A good team would have belted that mob off the park us well while we were clearly better we bumbled our way to another medicre win.

Small forward line wins big

The Tigers utilised a vast rotation in attack without spearhead Jack Riewoldt for the second straight week, and made Hawthorn regularly look silly in the meantime. They had 11 marks inside 50 by half-time and 20 by the final siren – after 17 in total last week – spread across 14 players, with Josh Caddy (four), Corey Ellis, Toby Nankervis and Anthony Miles (two each) the multiples. Caddy, who was outstanding, Dustin Martin and even Trent Cotchin had stints as the deepest forward and each kicked goals while playing that role. Richmond's famed pressure across the ground and ability to run hard in numbers helped its forwards' cause, leaving the Hawks often unsuccessfully scrambling to cover their opponents. There are still sceptics on whether the reliance on small forwards around Riewoldt will stand up in the finals, but there is little reason to suggest not on the evidence so far.

say what you want, its working and watching it live today we didnt actually look like we missed jack at all. (not that I dont want him back!) just saying.. Its good to know we can penetrate a very good defensive structure without a gun key fwd.
