AFLPA's MVP - Dusty wins Leigh Matthews MVP trophy
« on: September 12, 2017, 03:28:11 PM »
IS THIS the year Dustin Martin celebrates September with a clean sweep of the awards season, adding the AFLPA Most Valuable Player award to his AFLCA champion gong?

Martin, the un-backable favourite for the Brownlow Medal and last week's winner – with a record 122 votes – of the coaches' association top prize, is poised to take out the players' association award on Tuesday night at Peninsula in Docklands.

Named the Leigh Matthew Trophy after its inaugural winner in 1982, the MVP is arguably held in the highest esteem by the players as the winner is determined by his peers.

2017 MOST VALUABLE PLAYER NOMINEES

RICHMOND
Trent Cotchin, Dustin Martin, Alex Rance

Of course he does, it makes the whole suspension thing for Danger a farce because he will win the Brownlow by 10 votes
"The money might have been better. But, at the end of the day, Richmond showed faith in me. It's only fair that now we're 18th on the ladder, I show the faith back in the club and do everything I can to put them in front. In the end, I'm stoked I made the decision to stay. I f***ing love this club”

2017 AFLPA MVP: Dustin Martin voted league’s best by his peers, wins Leigh Matthews Trophy

DUSTIN Martin has been declared as the AFL’s best player by his own peers, defeating Patrick Dangerfield comfortably to win the 2017 AFLPA MVP award.

The Richmond superstar (1333 votes) claimed the Leigh Matthews Trophy from defending champion Dangerfield (776 votes) and in-demand GWS youngster Josh Kelly (416 votes).

“It’s an honour to be named MVP by the guys I play with, and against every week. I’m incredibly humbled by this,” Martin said.

It was a clear statement from the players, with Martin and Dangerfield grouped together all season as Brownlow Medal co-favourites until the Geelong midfielder became ineligible via a suspension.

While the margin (557 votes) was not quite to the extent of last year, when Dangerfield finished 926 votes clear of Adelaide’s Rory Sloane (fourth in 2017 with 267 votes), it was still a handy difference.

Martin is a nearly unbackable favourite to claim his first Brownlow Medal in less than two weeks’ time.

“In a year where Dusty has dealt with a lot of off-field noise, he’s managed to not only block it out, but take his game to another level, wowing us all with his power, skill and poise under pressure,” AFLPA CEO Paul Marsh said.

“Dusty has performed at an incredibly high standard week-in-week-out this season and being named the most valuable player by his peers will no doubt be one of many awards he receives for his exceptional year.”

Sydney Swans forward Lance Franklin rounded out the top five with 215 votes after not making the top ten last year.

In MVP voting, each player votes for the three teammates he considers to have been the most valuable this season. A nomination list of 54 players across the 18 teams (three per club) is formed.

In the second round of voting, all players vote for their MVP on a 3-2-1 basis from the nominees of the other 17 clubs.

AFLPA MVP VOTING

1. Dustin Martin — 1333 votes

2. Patrick Dangerfield — 776 votes

3. Josh Kelly — 416 votes

4. Rory Sloane — 267 votes

5. Lance Franklin — 215 votes

6. Tom Mitchell — 196 votes

7. Matt Crouch — 111 votes

8. Josh Kennedy — 98 votes

9. Joe Daniher — 78 votes

10. Robbie Gray — 77 votes

I might be missing something here, but how does Joe Daniher make the top 10?

I wouldn't rate him the MVP of Essendon, let alone top 10 in the league.

Martin was the main story of the night, however, and he credited little-known meditation sessions for taking his game to new heights in 2017 after revealing he had felt the strain of constant focus this season.

“I do actually have a few people that I can talk to, and I do some meditation on my day off and that helps me stay a bit relaxed,” the superstar Tiger said.

“I’ve definitely got people I can talk to that can help me through that sort of stuff.

“It has been (important). It has been pretty stressful, even though I might not show it. I’m glad all that stuff is out of the way and I’m just excited for the next couple of weeks.”

Richmond will play the winner of this Saturday night’s semi-final between Greater Western Sydney and West Coast, although the midfield bull is unlikely to watch much.

“I don’t watch too much football,” he smiled. “But I might watch a quarter.”

Martin delivered a 28-disposal best-afield performance against Geelong on Friday night, just days after immigration minister Peter Dutton created a new law that would keep his father Shane — who was deported to New Zealand in March 2016 for his links to the Rebels motorcycle club — from re-entering the country.

Shane Martin told the Herald Sun from New Zealand after last night’s vote count that he could not be prouder of his son.

“I couldn’t be any happier for Dustin,” he said.

“Through bad news last week, he just rises above it again.”

The man himself credited the unity of the playing group for Richmond taking the next step and last Friday night winning its first final since 2001.

“Our connection has been a lot better, we’ve been enjoying it and just embracing it,” he said.

“I think for example on Friday night, everyone played their role and that’s what I’m most proud of — everyone is chipping in.

“We’ve become a lot closer and it’s great.”

The “humbled” 26-year-old said the season that now sees him as the shortest-ever Brownlow Medal favourite in history has left him pinching himself at times.

“I guess it’s a little bit surreal sometimes, and you’ve got to pinch yourself,” he said.

He said coach Damien Hardwick has encouraged the players to embrace the next 10 days before they play off for a Grand Final spot, which would be its first in 35 years.

Martin said it is a world away from Round 23 of last season when the Tigers fell 113 points short of Sydney.

“It’s awesome,” he said.

“Compared to where we were last year, it’s just really awesome.

“Richmond is rocking. I was driving down the street (yesterday) and there was black and yellow everywhere. It’s great.”
