Schulz

Sarge really rose to the number 1 defender role in Gas' absence. I still think he's more a natural forward but hard to fault his effort today. Outmarked both Roughead and Franklin often, was very disciplined keeping both of them quiet and showed good poise and footy brains when he cleared the footy.

Along with Raines a rare positive from the game.

a few more positives

but 1st, sarge was fantastic, he dominated his position. raines was also pretty damn good.

other positves to note

tuck - continued on from last yr
lids - as above
bling - as teh game went on he started to feel more at home
simmonds - second half fantastic
krak - showed when on the ball he has what it takes, his last quarter efforts nearly one the game 4 u
white - showed us he will make it
hyde - see tuck
newman - see tuck
sugar - hard and tough and lead the team well, his kicking has improved on last yr, expect big things from him this yr

paddy -  timing a bit out but improved as the day went on

negatives

rodan - ok his first game back, bit harsh, but the idiot still holds the ball too long and thinks he is better than he is
hartigan - see rodan X10
roach - goodbye
richos kicking - get new shoes, even though u busted ur guts out there again, he must make teams pay

hall - goodbye
foley - needs to lift if he wants to make it
patterson - i know he is young, but he worries me, just does not seem to know where to go, what to do, is lost out there

I've been critical of the J-Man (as its so important for the club he comes good) but he impressed me tonight.

Schultzy is looked a good, solid, strong, rebounding, skillfull CHB.

Lets hope he takes the role with both hands and holds is down for the next 10 years. Potential A-Grader.

Yep impressed with Schulz, but just remember he was playing on a second year player.  Still think full forward is his best spot......or even CHF.
Does anyone have half an idea on anything?

I thought Jay was excellent :thumbsup

Even allwoing for him playing on 2nd year players (Franklin and Roughhead and he beat them both btw) he showed something that alot of blokes lacked.......

CLEAR THINKING and GOOD DECISION making and......... he hit a bloody target every time

that he did, his skilll level is exceptional! just hat we need out of a defender, too long we have relied on gas, kellaway and hall, all bad kicks to positon. jay looked at home.  what was even gr8 2 c, was he had the balls to leave his man to assist in other contests to spoil. he has a gr8 timed punch and will be a star. i like him better in defence, he runs str8 and hard , we dont need other fwds, we have enough coming through the ranks. we need a solid quick skilled defender kpp and thats jay!  and with raines we will finally have 2 defenders who can hit targets

I really think people have to start accepting Plough sees Schulz as a CHB. Not a CHF or FF.

I like him there. Looks very promising.

I've gotta agree, great effort from Shultz. Looks like he's going to be a tremendous asset for us if he can stay on the park.

There’s a feature story on Jay Schulz in this week’s Inside Football, written by Ben Casanelia.

Some bits from the article:

“All summer Schulz has been matched against Matthew Richardson in what he described as both a great learning experience and, at times, confidence drainer.

But it’s a sign the club is going to give him the time he needs to develop the skills required to be a consistent key defender.

Schulz has realistic expectations.

“At times I think I’ll be able to do it … but to do it consistetnly week-in week-out then that’s probably for next year.

You learn a totally different side to footy in defence, and to tell you the truth I quite enjoy it.

In the forward line you have to make your own magic but in defence someone else takes you to the footy.”

While Richardson’s six-goal effort in the club’s opening intra-club game put Schulz back on his haunches, his first full pre-season since joining the club has given rise to an improved year.

“I’ve trained on Richo for the last two years and it can dint your confidence at times I still find it impossible to play on him.

Despite the weight of expectation of being the club’s defensive project, Schulz says it is nothing to what he places on himself.

“I put the expectation on myself, more than Plough … does, I reckon.”

I put those expectations on myself to adapt to the position as quickly as possible because that’s the way I’m going to get better and play more senior footy.”

Schulz on:

Growing up – “I’ve just grown up a lot.  It just made me realise a heck of a lot of things and look at myself really hard.  I feel like I’m a lot older than 20.  It feels like I’ve been here for six years and while I’m still young I don’t think of myself that way any more.”

His goals – “The biggest thing for me is to have a consistent year and hold a spot on the senior side.  That will make me feel a lot better.”

Thanks for posting that. I still see Jay as a FF but if can hold down CHB for the rest of his career we should be well happy. :)
