Become premiers on the Sunshine Coast, Tigers to return Sunshine Coast

mysunshinecoast.com.au
7 October 2017

It appears the Sunshine Coast’s ideal weather conditions and excellent sport and training facilities are one of the keys to winning a premiership title.

Just ask the Richmond Tigers (AFL), Melbourne Storm (NRL), Sunshine Coast Lightning (Suncorp Super Netball) and New Zealand’s Southern Steel (ANZ Premiership netball) who all held their pre-season training camps in the region and went on to win national competitions in 2017.

And the Tigers loved it so much at the start of this season that they’ve already booked in for a return visit to kick off 2018.

Mayor Mark Jamieson said it was fantastic to see the teams who chose our region for their pre-season training camps come away with the silverware in their competitions.

“All four of these great teams have benefitted from our excellent sporting facilities, ideal weather conditions and an all-round great environment for players to build up their fitness levels and teamwork,” Mayor Jamieson said.

“With world-class training venues at Maroochydore, the Sunshine Coast Stadium and the only Australian Institute of Sport accredited facility at the University of the Sunshine Coast, our region is fast being recognised as one of Australia’s premier sports training destinations.

“This year, our region has also welcomed the Australian women’s cricket team and the Australian Diamonds netball team and the first of our pre-Commonwealth Games visitors from Wales and Scotland.

“We are delighted we can continue to roll out the welcome mat for a range of national and international sporting teams and being one of the key ingredients in their recipe for success.”

Richmond Tigers general manager of football Neil Balme said the new AFL premiers would be back on the Sunshine Coast in the New Year.

“The Sunshine Coast provides excellent training facilities, great weather and a fantastic environment for our team to build their fitness as we lead into the start of the AFL season,” Mr Balme said.

“We’ve certainly seen great results this year following our first year of pre-season training here, and we’re already looking to come back in January again to start our premiership defence.”

By beating Adelaide in the AFL grand final last weekend, Richmond joined a prestigious list of teams who have chosen the Sunshine Coast for their pre-season training camp and gone on to win the premiership, with the last five AFL premiers – Hawthorn (2013-15) and Western Bulldogs (2016) - also choosing the region as their pre-season training base.

Tourism, Sport and Major Events Portfolio Cr Jason O’Pray said the Sunshine Coast offers a great range of high-calibre training facilities for a wide range of sports.

“The training facilities we have in this region cater for more than 32 sports disciplines,” Cr O’Pray said.

“We’ve been working hard to build strong relationships with a number of sporting clubs over the past few years and we’re pleased to see these teams achieve sporting success.

“The economic and social benefits these pre-season camps bring our community are enormous, with the industry contributing more than $440 million in economic activity each year.

“Sport is an important part of our lifestyle, and it goes to show our sunshine and facilities really are second to none.

“Sunshine Coast Council is now actively recruiting for 2018 champions, so if you want to be in with a chance of winning next year’s national title, we recommend you book your pre-season training camp early, before your competitors do.”

Funny they don't mention the Crows 3 day trip there during the bye week. Suppose no one brags about losers. :shh

Just hope the club publicity and merchandising staff are gearing up for a HUGE Queensland visit.
There'll be a LOT of Richmond supporters wanting to celebrate (and buy premiership merchandise and memberships for 2018).
Could pay for the whole trip just with quality merchandise.

Richmond Tigers bring the winning cup to Coast fans

Sunshine Coast Daily
18 January 2018

Premiership title holders, Richmond Tigers will be returning to the Sunshine Coast for a second time and will bring a special piece of silverware to show-off too.

The Tigers will hit the Maroochydore Multi Sports Complex for a pre-season training camp next week, bringing with them the 2017 premiership cup.

Richmond coach, Damien Hardwick said fans can view the prized piece of silverware at their community open session on Monday, January 22.

"We're excited to be returning to the Sunshine Coast for a second time for our pre-season training camp,” Hardwick said.

"We're bringing with us the 2017 premiership cup, which we're excited to share with our members and fans.”

Supporters can see the team in action with training starting at 9.15am and then get up close and personal with the cup from 11.30am following the team's training session at the Maroochydore Multi Sports Complex.

Tourism, Sport and Major Events Portfolio Cr Jason O'Pray said it was great to have Richmond returning for a second year prior to the 2018 season.

"Our region seems to have become a winning formula for professional football teams, with the last five AFL premiership winners all holding pre-season training camps on the Sunshine Coast,” Cr O'Pray said.

"The high quality sporting facilities we have in our region, along with great weather conditions, provides a fantastic combination for professional sporting teams to prepare ahead of the start of their competition.

"These camps also provide our community with great economic and social benefits by contributing to the Sunshine Coast becoming known as a high-quality sporting destination and adding to the $440 million per year in economic activity the comes from the sports economy.”

Richmond keen for pre-season Coast trip

Tom Threadingham
Sunshine Coast Daily
21 January 2018

AFL: Pre-season training on the Sunshine Coast formed just one of the many 'building blocks' towards a premiership title for the Richmond Tigers last year, and they'll soon return to local turf on the hunt for similar success.

The Tigers will roar into hot and humid conditions at the Maroochydore Multi-sport Complex on Monday, determined to not only build strength, but bonds among the playing group, according to assistant coach Andrew McQualter.

He was among the group that visited the Coast last year, and believed the trip had played an important role in the club's premiership success.

"It just helped in terms of the season full stop and we go up there and we get to spend a week together and it creates a good bond and connection with the group,” he said.

"Spending the whole week in each other's pockets forces you to build and develop relationships with people so it's a building block for that for sure.”

Richmond will hit the Coast for their third week of preseason training following the festive break.

McQualter said the Tigers' training regime on the Coast would remain normal, but hoped it would break the "monotony” of the usual schedule with the Coast's weather to also add a degree of difficulty for the squad.

"We really enjoyed it (last year) and we basically moved everything we do in Melbourne up to Queensland for a week and did the exact same training program,” he said. "It's a good time of the year to get away and it breaks up the preseason a little bit and when we were up there (last year) we had access to great facilities and we are keen to use them again.

"It's obviously really challenging for the guys to come up and train in the humidity up there (too) so that was part of the reason we wanted to come up there as well.”

He said the "whole list” of players would make the trip, with the club's youth set to push hard at the camp as they vie for a spot in the squad.

"I think that's one of the great things about our club,” he said.

"Our VFL team was playing really good footy at the end of last year and there were a lot of good players playing in the VFL and that's translated over into the pre-season.

"There's lots of good competition and there's going to be a good challenge for spots when the games come around.”

Fans can see the team in action at 9.15am on Monday at the Maroochydore Multi Sports Complex and then get a closer look at the cup from 11.30am.

Tigers head back to where it all began

RICHMOND has departed for a six-day training camp on the Sunshine Coast, repeating the program that played a critical role in its 2017 premiership.

The Tigers travelled to Queensland for a brutal training camp last pre-season, using that week-long trip to also launch the 'triple H' sessions that players have credited as a centrepiece of their success.

The triple H sessions saw players share life stories of their hardships, highlights and heroes, from January on the Sunshine Coast through to September.

Football manager Neil Balme said the ground made during last year's camp had inspired the Tigers to repeat it as the pre-season moves into a new phase ahead of the JLT Community Series in five weeks.

"They're virtually the same … it's one day shorter, but very similar in concept and idea," Balme told AFL.com.au.

"We had a good experience there last year, so we thought we'd try it again.

"It's a nice place to go, but it's just to get them together for that whole period, so you can do some work in the evenings and the players get used to each other.

"There will be a reasonable element of that, working together and figuring out what our purpose is."

The Tigers departed on Sunday and will return next Friday, holding training sessions in Mooloolaba and Maroochydore.

An open training session will be held at the Maroochydore Multisports Complex at 9.15am on Monday.

Tigers get tough

The Tigers main training group has launched what will be the toughest week of its pre-season.

Richmond has travelled north for a gruelling five-day training group that was a key plank in its premiership success last season, moving into match-play for the first time on Monday.

Physical performance manager Peter Burge said the pre-season had been building towards this week as the players prepare for pre-season games, starting for some with AFLX on February 17.

"Our third week of training in January is generally our hardest week we that have in all pre-season," Burge told the club's website.

"Today (Monday) was the first of the main sessions that we do, [and it] was pretty tough.

"The drills are fairly similar to what we've done the last few weeks – very physical drills – and it's progressed each week.

"The times of our drills have lengthened and the physicality of our drills has been high the last couple of weeks … we've just progressed into a little bit of match play for the first time today."

Burge said the Tigers had stationed their pre-season camp in January to break up the post-Christmas block of training and mentally refresh the players at an important point of the summer.
