Melbourne Aquarium has fulfilled a promise to name its newest penguin chick Tiger to toast Richmond's drought-breaking AFL premiership.

Richmond's 51-point grand final demolition of Adelaide brought Tigers tragics their first flag in 37 years, and with it naming rights for the first gentoo species chick born this breeding season.

The exhibition penguins originally tipped Adelaide to win in September, when they swarmed to a fish cake emblazoned with the Crows' red, blue and yellow colours.

But Richmond proved its penguin-doubters wrong, and the little creatures will be forced to live with a Tiger in their midst as a daily reminder.

The three-week-old chick is "growing nice and strong" at 916 grams after weighing a minuscule 86 grams at birth, bird manager Sarina Walsh told AAP.

"The colony is as excited as the keepers when new chicks arrive," Ms Walsh said at a special health check on Friday.

"The parents, obviously, are very excited about their little chicks, but the rest of the colony welcome chicks with open wings."

Tiger's birth on October 25 marked the seventh successive year the aquarium has bred the near-threatened species, the Antarctic's most northerly penguins.
