Jack Higgins officially out for the year, will be released from hospital today. An “abnormality” he’s had since birth has caused the brain bleed. Will play again next year, which is great news!

"Without being a medico by nature, he has had an abnormality since birth, which has reared its head. It's a chance to pop up its head between the ages of 10 and 30, so obviously Jack falls into that time frame," coach Damien Hardwick said.

"He's got a group of blood vessels that aren't strong and naturally bleed. Obviously, he's had a bigger bleed that's caused the issue. He won't play again this year.

"In 4-6 weeks he'll have another scan once the blood has subsided, then he'll probably have a procedure to rectify the result.

"He'll play footy again, which is really exciting for us and great for Jack. We're rapt. Our medicos did a terrific job detecting it and sending for scans. Now we know the solution, we just have to be patient and wait till that occurs."

"Anytime you sort of hear of a brain bleed you think the worst. But it wasn’t a trauma event, it was something he’s had since he was born.

"And so for anything you hear of the significance of a brain bleed you obviously fear the worst.

"So it’s a real positive for us and a real positive for Jack."

Hardwick said the playing group was continually kept informed after Higgins was hospitalised on Tuesday night, and the lively 20-year-old was in a typically upbeat mood.

"He was meant to have no visitors in hospital, and the doc rocks up and he's got 8-10 of his mates in the room with him," Hardwick said.

"He's one of those guys – and it's what we love about this kid – you wouldn't know he's got a significant injury.   

"So he's in good spirits and he's pumped to get out of hospital today. I think he would have been driving the staff in there insane with his questions, but the great thing for us is he's on the mend."

Richmond Club Doctor, Greg Hickey has provided an update on the condition of Jack Higgins:

“Jack’s Neurosurgeon has decided the best course of action is for Jack to have surgery next week to repair the area of abnormal blood vessels responsible for the bleeding on his brain.

“Following the surgery, there will be a period of recovery and rehabilitation for some months, but we certainly expect Jack to resume playing football next season.”

Arteriovenous Malformation

Normally, arteries carry blood containing oxygen from the heart to the brain, and veins carry blood with less oxygen away from the brain and back to the heart. When an arteriovenous malformation (AVM) occurs, a tangle of blood vessels in the brain bypasses normal brain tissue and directly diverts blood from the arteries to the veins.

It's an abnormal growth of blood vessels that are clumped together. They usually have weaker walls and thus are more prone to rupturing and that leads to bleeding. Higgins had a small bleed. If it is a large bleed you can easily die, hence the need for surgery. Sometimes you can coil the AVM via radiological approaches but it looks like that they've gone for the old fashion craniotomy!

Benny Gale on 3aw just now said Higgo will have his surgery and then rest. They asked if Higgo's footy future is at risk and Benny replied Higgo is expected to make a full recovery.
