Liam Baker – 8
An excellent game from the hard-nut defender, throwing everything at the Cats (including an errant arm at Joel Selwood). His pressure was immense, forcing his opponents into mistakes. Worked hard both ways to finish with 14 disposals and four inside-50s

Liam Baker

The dashing Tiger was lively early in the game as he showed his ability to break the lines and withstand the pressure from the Cats forwards. His efficiency moving forward was a highlight.

Thought he was our best, especially in the first half when it was tight.

Excellent hands, quick, brave, and disposal is so clean.

Easily a 7 for me. One of our best for the finals series actually. True gun small defender.

Watching it again, as others have said, Baker's clean hands really stood out especially early on when most others were fumbling in the slippery conditions. Deceptively strong over the ball & well balanced for a small bloke.

Agree, note Selwood pushed his face into the ground in the last quarter, a typical Selwood action IMO, if it had been Lynch on Selwood we would still be hearing about it

Jack said a few things last night about this bloke, and he was glowing with praise.

Shorty, Graham too but the biggest praise was for Baker

Sam Mitchell type.

Im not sure which recruiter found this guy but he deserves a pay rise

FJ does it again :clapping
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

Apparently hit a trigger last season that has seen his current contract extended for 1 year so no longer out of contract at the end of the season  :thumbsup

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"I DIDN'T THINK I HAD A DEFENSIVE BONE IN MY BODY": BAKER'S SURPRISE AT SUCCESS OF SWITCH

By Nathan John
SEN
26 March 2021

Liam Baker has been a vital cog in back-to-back Richmond premierships, but says he is still coming to grips with his positional change.

Baker was drafted at the end of 2017 as a forward who could rotate through the midfield, but midway through the 2019 season he made the switch to the backline.

The West Australian told SEN Breakfast he couldn’t have foreseen the move.

“No way. I’ve said it before, I didn’t think I had a defensive bone in my body,” Baker laughed.

“Dimma (coach Damien Hardwick) is the genius, it was his idea.

“He got me down there and it’s worked moreso than when I was in the forward line, so happy days.”

The 23-year-old identified his ground game as a factor in the switch with Hardwick having believed his willingness to get his hands dirty could suit the frenetic tempo Richmond dictate.

“He always said ‘We’ll try you at half-back somewhere along the line,’” Baker recalled.

“I didn’t really believe him, but one day I ended up back there in a VFL game, (and) a couple of weeks later I was in the AFL team.

“I’m loving it down there, it’s worked out well.”

Baker will have to adjust again this season, with the heightened pace of the game permitting backlines less time to set up.

“It’s a different game now,” he explained.

“It’s a mindset thing. We’re going to get more goals kicked on us this season than we have in previous years, so you can’t be getting too angry. You’ve just got to accept it.

“I think we're still structured well and our defence of previous years will hold up again.”

Baker last year hit a trigger in his contract for an extra season, locking him in at Tigerland until the end of 2022.

He has played 43 games since he arrived from WAFL club Subiaco, having missed just one in the Tigers’ successful premiership defence.

“I don’t want to be anywhere else, (so) I’m pretty stoked to get one more year," Baker said.

With Vlas coming back, we should be able to retain names in this high half forward role at the expense of one of the smalls. Can tackle and pressure as good as any of them and is much better at delivering it inside 50.
