In the end, the old adage that a good big man always beats a good little man is true...Its also true that you should always pick blokes that can play. Mitch Clark can play- Everyone who looked at last years draft new he was a star in the making...but as usual we didnt pick what was ours to be taken. But as I said at the start...Oakley Nicholls must be some sort of player. He must be...otherwise why would Miller not pick Clark instead. I look forward to the explanation from the club and the people who made the decision.
You know a lot more about this than I ever will RT, but even I was surprised when we passed on KPP the last 2 drafts.
I know X isn’t all that rapt with Meyer, because of his attitude and stuff, but even if it is true that he doesn’t want to be here, we haven’t lost on that pick. And the way most Clubs tend to look at these things is that you pick the best player available. Should things not work out for any reason, and a player wants to go home, or whatever, then you have some bargaining power, which I’m sure you know anyway. I hope Meyer stays, because he seems all class, but if it turns out that he wants to go home then we can at least expect a round 1 draft pick for him. From that perspective, we wouldn’t seem to have lost anything.
What you’re talking about is different to Meyer’s situation, but with these young players you really cannot judge them properly till they’ve been in the system at least 3-4 seasons. Sometimes you can just tell with some players whether they will make it or not, but Travis Johnstone, for examples, was a bit maligned before he got going. Now he seems to have matured a bit and developed some consistency in his game. But it took him a few seasons to do that.
In a way, I think it can help make some players to maybe have to work hard to get a game and then play consistent footy. If it all happens too easily and all at once for some of them, maybe they don’t appreciate the opportunity they have. If they’re resilient and good enough, they’ll make it. If we start worrying about who we should’ve picked up and so on then we’ll never be happy.
You win some, you lose some and if things don’t work out for some players then someone else will take their place. That’s the way it’s always been and will always be, I guess.
