Tigers set to name four more in Hall of Fame

Richmond will induct another four outstanding Tigerland contributors into its Hall of Fame, at the Club's 2006 Season Launch gala evening, to be held at the Plaza Ballroom, Regent Theatre on Monday, March 27.

The Tigers currently have 35 members in their Hall of Fame, under the categories of Players, Coaches and Servants. And, the Club has four people, who have been given the ultimate accolade of 'Immortal' status - Jack Dyer, Kevin Bartlett, Tommy Hafey and Francis Bourke.

Much speculation surrounds the naming of this next group of Hall of Fame inductees, with so many worthy candidates in line for selection.

At last year's Season Launch, Merv Keane, Martin Bolger and Hugh James were inducted into the Tigers' Hall of Fame, while Francis Bourke became an 'Immortal'.

Other highlights of this year's Season Launch evening include the presentation of the 2006 playing list, and an address from senior coach Terry Wallace.

The cost to attend what shapes as a terrific night of Tigerism, is $150 per head (incl. GST), and for that you'll also receive a delicious three-course meal, beverages and some fine entertainment.

For bookings, or further enquiries, please contact the Richmond Events Department on (03) 9426 4485.

Does our HOF have the same criteria as the AFL one where you have to have been retired for a few years before becoming eligible? Just wondering whether Knighter would be a show.

Others could be Alan Geddes, Gordon Strang, Billy Barrot, Ian Stewart or Geoff Raines

Immortal - Royce or Titus

I know Royce was a champion, but i think Skinny Titus should get immortal before him.

I agree with that. when I was a small boy there were three names that stood out at Richmond: Jack Dyer, Jacky Titus and Dicky Harris.

My choices:

My favourite player Billy Barrot
Three time premiership player Bryan Wood
Rainsey Senior (although it still peees me off he went to Collingwood - he was probably one of the first true professionals - went where the money was).

I know Michael Green was a great ruckman of his time, but i'm surprised he was picked ahead of the three above.

Immortal, the one and only Royce Hart, but Titus would have to be up there as well

I think those three being overlooked so far would have to do with them playing for other Clubs after Richmond. It took us 80 years to recognise our first VFL premiership captain because he originally came from Collingwood then afterwards went to Hawthorn ::).

Four into Tiger Hall of Fame
9:46:11 PM Mon 27 March, 2006
Paul Gough
Sportal for afl.com.au

Bryan Wood, a key member in three Richmond premierships in the Tigers' golden era, was one of four inductees into the club's Hall of Fame on Monday night.

The champion wingman was joined by former captain Ron Branton, former player and chairman of selectors Allan Cooke and 1920's legend Clarrie Hall in this year's four inductees as the Tigers again honoured players from different eras.

Wood is the best known of the four and was a star in the club's 1973, 74 and 80 premiership sides in an era when the club won five premierships in 13 years.

Originally recruited from Blackburn in Melbourne's eastern suburbs, Wood made an immediate impact and was the club's best first year player in 1972.

He would go on to play 209 games over the next decade and was captain in 1981, the year in which he was awarded life membership of the Tigers.

Wood, who would later go on to play in another premiership for Essendon under the coaching of his former Richmond teammate Kevin Sheedy, also represented Victoria on two occasions.

Branton was a three-time Richmond best and fairest winner - winning the award in three consecutive years (1960-62) - and wore the club's famous number 29 jumper - later worn by the club's games' record holder Kevin Bartlett - with distinction in 171 matches.

Originally recruited from Myrtleford in country Victoria, he was also captain of the Tigers from 1960-62 and was the club's best first year player in 1953 and twice leading goalkicker in 1953 and 1954.

Cooke gave the Tigers more than three decades of service on and off the field after playing the first of his 116 games in 1949.

The ruckman would play until 1958 and a decade later joined the club's match committee.

The following year in 1969 he would become Richmond's chairman of selectors, a position he would hold until 1985.

During his time in that role, the Tigers would win four premierships under the coaching of Tom Hafey and Tony Jewell.

Hall was one of the Tigers' first champion players after the club joined the league in 1908.

A rover from Prahran he played 150 games from 1912-22 and 1924 and played in the Tigers' first two VFL premierships in 1920-21.

He would later become the club's vice-president in 1935 and then helped form Richmond's past players association in 1951.

I remember watching Ronny Branton playing in his first practice match he was a standout that day and you knew He was a goer. in those days they only played intra club games.

Fantastic that Clarrie Hall got in. Next year Bill Wilson should get a go.

Has Jack Baggot got a guernsey yet in the Hall of Fame. He was seriously ripped of in the Team of the Century for mine.

Don't believe so Ramps as he's not listed on the HOF page on the RFC site.

Billy Wilson was our best rover in his time unfortunatly he had to content with such greats as Alan Ruthven (Fitzroy) and Billy Hutchinson (Essendon) who were just a class above him.
However he roved for the great Bill Morris who was arguably the greatest palmer of the ball of all time and then before his career ended to Roy Wright who ranks among our greatest ruckman.
In those days the rover as he got older and slower was relegated to the back pocket.
Now they try to trade them and if that fails they delist them. Rather sad but a fact of commercial life.
a company has no heart. just shareholders to appease.

Oh bye the way I wasn't born when Clarrie Hall played so I do not feel qualified to comment: (Mopsy)

Fortunately Bill had the sense to relegate himself to the Glenelg Football Club for 3 years (55-57) whereupon he won the best and fairest in his first year, won the Advertiser (or was it the News) Player of the Year and was even favourite for the Magarey, but came 3rd. He later returned to the RFC (coached my uncle in the 19s) and was on the committee a while (incl. for 67).

Not sure whether I ever "met" him as he died when I was 2 or 3. I obviously didn't see him play but my father, grandparents etc were regulars in the members at Punt Rd to see cousin Bill-O do his thing - which also means they saw JD and old Mopsy himself. (When I ask dad what mopsy was like he just says something like "Yeah, Mopsy, mmmm, dear me, Mopsy, mmm, bit of an anger problem".)
