The Age Real Footy Podcast: Only two teams can beat Richmond at the MCG

The Age
18 June 2018 — 3:52pm

Richmond have won 16 straight games at the MCG. When they beat Geelong at the ground on Sunday it was a year to the day of their last loss at the famous stadium (a nine point defeat to Sydney in round 13, 2017).

It looks quite likely that Richmond will have a home qualifying final and even more likely that, given their MCG record, they will play a home preliminary final.

Win that and it's an MCG grand final and a chance to go back-to-back for the Tigers. Basically, if someone other than Richmond wants to win the premiership they need to beat Damien Hardwick's men at the MCG. But who can?

Well, our Real Footy Podcast panel of Michael Gleeson, Jake Niall and Geelong Brownlow medallist and premiership star Jimmy Bartel thinks there might be two teams that can.

They said Sydney and Melbourne (if they find that consistency to play at their best).

Not Sydney. They only barely beat Hawthorn there this year and they've been pantsed in finals at the MCG before.

I would say Melbourne or even North (if both teams bring out their best) could be a threat. Also we don't know how good the Eagles are at the MCG considering they've only played Carlton there this year.

Eagles will also get the opportunity to play the Hawks at the G this year.
I've also heard a couple of times now that the dimensions of their new ground are very similar to the G, so I personally think it wont bother them too much.
A lot of talk from media and supporters about their inability to win at the G and I know that's warranted from seasons gone but I always expect the unexpected.

Sydney beat us at the MCG last year and have a habit of playing well away from home. Would not underestimate them.

Sydney beat us ( just ) last year before we became the monster we are today .

We blew that game missing easy shots at crucial times .

Even then - Sydney looked shell shocked for almost a half .

Reckon the Sydney challenge is something this team will embrace and will love .

Anyone could beat us if we had a bad day. The Saints game was a little too close for comfort, I actually thought we would lose.

The only two team I reckon can beat us at the MCG are Collingwood and Melbourne.

They have very good ruckmen and very solid midfields.

With their list, Melbourne really should become a real premiership chance in the next few years.

Hardwick said Melbourne have the best list in the league at the mid year review.
