27 July 2018Former Melbourne captain Garry Lyon believes Richmond midfielder Kane Lambert has had a better year than Tigers skipper Trent Cotchin.
Since being drafted in 2015, Lambert has managed to develop into a consistent ball winning midfielder and has cemented his spot in the Tigers' best 22.
In 2018, Lambert is averaging 22 disposals and 3.0 clearances, in comparison to Cotchin, who is averaging 23 disposals and 5.0 clearances.
With Cotchin and Brownlow Medallist Dustin Martin typically receiving the bulk of attention from opposition sides, Lyon believes it could be time for teams to turn their attention to Lambert.
SEN Breakfast with Garry Lyon and Tim Watson can be heard Monday-Friday 6-9am, and you can subscribe to the podcast here.
“If you’re at the ground, watch Kane Lambert closely, his work rate is just phenomenal,” Lyon said on SEN Breakfast.
“He and (Shane) Edwards who are so good, don’t get the attention that Cotchin and Martin do, I think that’s going to change.
“I think someone’s going to have to go to Lambert.
“He’s probably had a better year than Cotchin this year.
“So I wonder at some stage whether you ask the question of a player that hasn’t ever been tagged.
“We know that Cotchin will handle a tag ok, we know that Dusty handles it ok, let’s find out about Lambert.
“I think that’s the way to go.”
