Could out-of-contract Tigers take pay cuts to stay?

Richmond has more quality out of contract players than any other club and it’s likely they won’t be able to keep them all.

Premiership players Bachar Houli, Shaun Grigg, Jacob Townsend and Nathan Broad [sic: already re-signed but not publicly announced], the much-improved Jayden Short [sic: just re-signed], as well as Callum Moore, Shai Bolton, Reece Conca, Sam Lloyd, Anthony Miles, Connor Menadue and Corey Ellis are all still uncontracted.

However, the Richmond leaders are showing the way with Jack Riewoldt recently re-signing and taking a pay cut, while Alex Rance signed on for much less than his market worth.

Riewoldt will remain with the club through until the end of 2021 and defender Brandon Ellis believes they’re building a culture of success over money.

“That’s the great thing about our club, if you want to stay and keep the bond and the team we’ve got, I guess you’ve got to (take less money),” Ellis told SEN Breakfast.

“You want to stay here for success, not play for the money, and Jack’s been a fantastic part of Richmond ever since he got here and hopefully a few boys can follow his lead.”

Other Tigers may have to take significant pay cuts if they want to remain with the reigning premiers. If not, Richmond could be an interesting team to watch come the trade period.
