AFL On The Couch: Garry Lyon says ‘the Tiger cage’ is a tactic Richmond could unleash in finals

MELBOURNE great Garry Lyon says Richmond’s unique set up from kick-ins could be a potential plan the Tigers are testing for September.

The 2017 premiers unleashed a new tactic on Friday night, dubbed ‘the Tiger cage’, with Richmond players lining the boundary when Geelong scored a point.

Lyon says the Tigers set up caught the Cats off-guard, taking them nearly two quarters to work out what their opposition was doing.

“At the first three kick ins, it’s really different. They lined up around boundary,” Lyon said on Fox Footy’s On The Couch.

“They’re just making the ground really big and they went from one end of the ground to the other end very quickly in the piece.

“They adjusted Geelong and about halfway through the second quarter they made an adjustment.”

Lyon, who was commentating for SEN 1116, says it was noticeable to the naked-eye watching live at the MCG — with Richmond running out narrow three-point winners.

“It was just being at the ground, it was really noticeable how they spread along the boundary and made it big,” he said.

“The zone got out of whack ever so slightly, because they (Geelong) were looking at it (thinking) ‘that’s unusual’.”

Richmond currently are a game clear on top of the AFL ladder and with three games to go in the home and away season, Lyon suggests that ‘the Tiger cage’ is a potential tactic the club could be trialling that could be unveiled in the finals.

“I think clubs at this time of year are just going to try things between now and finals, to work out which they’re going to use and which they put in the kitbag and pull out on in a Prelim.”

Err not quite.
Every other club is still trying to qualify either for the eight or top four.
One game between fourth and tenth with GWS only half a game further in front in third.

We are two and a half games ahead of third, so we would have to lose games to 17, 11 and 14 to lose a top two (and home ground advantage) finish.

Don't think too many clubs are going to gamble with their form to trial tactics too much.
Geelong tried different tactics against us last weekend, but that can be seen as trying something different because what they usually did wasn't working.
Despite what Scott is saying, they showed they had nothing to lose.

There's a big chance we'll see new tactics from our remaining opponents for the same reason.
All good. We just use the "learning", as Hardwick put it, to keep interest up at training.
