Players cut down through injury
« on: March 23, 2006, 09:07:08 PM »
The rate Nick Daffy thread got me thinking a little about Richmond players whose careers have been cut short over the last 10 years or so due to injury.

The ones that come to mind for me are:

Nick Daffy (knee)
Tony Free (knee)
Scott Turner (knee)
Justin Charles (hip)
Mark Merenda (back)

thats all i can think of at this stage but all of the players listed above where VERY good players at their peak. Such a shame to not get full service from them.

Is there anyone i have missed from say around 1990 onwards?

It's arguable that it ended his career as he never did anything pre or post 95 but it's often forgotten that Stuart Wigney did his ankle (IIRC) in the same game as Richo did his knee up in Sydney. He was flying up to then at CHB and gave Carey a bath in that Monday night game. He came back late in the season to play in the finals but he never found that form again. How costly was that Sydney game - lost both our CHF and CHB in one hit :-\.

From the early 90's, Brad Gwilliam did a knee after only 4 games from memory. In that brief time he was fairly solid for us at FB.

Chris Pym's carreer was over when he did his knee

I wasn't a great fan of Merenda's - he was too much like Daffy - plenty of kicks but quality of them  :banghead.

One of three anyone or perhaps one on five ;D

Lionel "where's the doctor" Proctor. ;D Supposedly a future superstar who seemed to spend 99% of his games walking the boundary with the medical staff. :(

Lionel Proctor was an out and out DUD.

I really rated Merenda and also Charles.

In 96 Charles got 17 votes in the brownlow and Merenda 15, Voss and Hird won with 21.

That was a pretty good effort by both players. We never saw the best of Merenda and poor old Charlesy was really firing when he was done for the drugs.
