Alternative to compo picks
« on: September 06, 2018, 09:44:03 AM »
All this talk of compo picks is driving me crazy.

Unsure exactly how it would work but how about the bottom 3 teams get an extended salary cap.
18th gets an extra 2 mill, 17th a mill and 16th 500k.

Anyone see any merit in this or could it cause problems with players getting overpaid?

Then money would need to be available for subsequent years?
Good players going to lower ranked clubs via compo picks creates an issue in holding the player at the end of their tenure either through players wanting success or chasing $.

No need to give the bottom clubs extra salary cap, they already have enough money to entice/retain players from a financial standpoint.

The thing that stops them being able to do so is players not wanting to go to/stay at bottom teams which the clubs need to deal with themselves by nailing their draft picks and facilitating good culture and development.

If anything compo picks should be scrapped and free agents are free to move to whatever club they choose without their current club receiving anything.

One thing i would like to see is players that are under contract and request a trade being able to be traded to whatever team their current club get the best deal for without needing the players permission like how it is in american sports. This is the area where clubs are being hard done by in regards to player movement and where some power needs to be given back to the clubs rather than all given to the players.

IMV the problem stems from the TPP rule of all clubs needing to pay a minimum 95% (or is now 100% under the latest CBA?) of the salary cap. It was implemented originally by the AFL in the mid-90s to finish off Fitzroy and so is totally irrelevant nowdays.

If bottom clubs could pay their list based on what it's worth talent wise and output (no. of wins & ladder finish) then they would have a million or two spare under the salary cap to go out and poach players from the top clubs that are at the cap limit. Giving the bottom clubs extra salary cap space would achieve a similar aim but really you're then rewarding existing poor list management and failing to address underlying inept club boards and administrations (eg: Carlton, St Kilda & Gold Coast). A number of these clubs are in debt up to their eyeballs so they aren't in a viable position to pay even more to their playing list even if allowed by the AFL.

8 years ago journos were writing we were the worst team since Fitzroy. We lost picks like all clubs to GCS and GWS and we now find

ourselves a powerhouse. It takes professionalism, good people, great execution of strategy on and off field. Thats why these other clubs
are no good. St Kilda for example has never been any good and they never will. Its not in their DNA.

Just pee off GWS & Gold Coast and redistribute their talent instead..... :shh
