Richmond defender Alex Rance in hot water following potential eye gouge

Star Richmond defender Alex Rance could be in trouble following a suspected eye-gouge in the Tigers’ qualifying final win over Hawthorn.

Rance was involved in a scuffle with Hawks small forward Paul Puopolo when Puopolo pushed the All-Australian defender’s head into the turf.

The Tigers star then responded by shoving his hands into the vicinity of Puopolo’s eye.

However, following the game Collingwood president Eddie McGuire suggested that Rance has nothing to worry about.

If he eye gouged then Poopoo would have retaliated or at least squinted. Nothing wrong with trying to push off someone that has your head pinned down with their elbow. That they’re not talking about that in the first place just shows how much they love a good witch hunt against anything Richmond.

Nothing to see here. MRO has cleared it.

Contact between Hawthorn's Paul Puopolo and Richmond's Alex Rance towards each other during the second quarter of Friday's match was assessed. After viewing all available vision, it was determined that while Puopolo made contact to Rance's neck/face area with his forearm, the force used was below that required for a charge to be laid, when considering he was also being impacted by other players at the time. As Rance was on the ground with the Hawthorn player's weight on him, it was the view that he was seeking to push the player off him and that his actions were not unreasonable in the circumstances.
