Rate a Tiger's year - Dustin Martin?
« on: October 12, 2018, 04:07:19 AM »
Dusty is next. A fair bit of debate about how to rate his year after his freakish record-breaking 2017.

Martin played all but one game (missed the loss to Port in R12) in his ninth season of AFL to take his career tally to 201. His 2018 though will be mostly remembered for the speculation surrounding the severity of his 'corky' going into the Preliminary Final. His AFL fantasy ranking for that final was his 4th worst since 2013.

Season highlights
25 disposals, 7 tackles, 5 goals (vs Adelaide R2, 2018)
26 disposals, 10 marks, 4 goals (vs Essendon R22, 2018)
33 disposals, 4 marks, 4 tackles, 1 goal (vs Bulldogs R23, 2018)
30 disposals, 6 marks, 3 tackles, 2 goals (vs Adelaide R16, 2018)
26 disposals, 4 marks, 6 tackles (vs Geelong R20, 2018)

AFL rankings in 2018

Another top 3 - his 7th of 9 seasons.
We needed him fully fit and firing in the prelim but his record says it all
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

It's interesting to see how harshly Dusty is judged by some sections of the media and also fans although I do suspect some of those fans are more interested in the super coach points Dusty can deliver for them rather than his actual performance in relation to his role for the team.   I recently stumbled across an old radio interview done pre-draft in 2009 and it was apparent even then how humble and team orientated Martin was and still is today.

Despite most saying he started the season slowly, I thought he had a great start before picking up some kind of injury possibly around the Melbourne game from memory.  The club was managing whatever that injury was (hip/groin/knee?) and Martin was still able to play the role required although it was obviously to me his explosive power was impacted.  That last part of the season looked like full steam ahead until that corky - sucky timing all round really  :(

Who knows if we will ever see another season like 2017 and it's unfair to judge 2018 against that incredible benchmark especially because the improvement in the overall team meant individual match winners were less likely to be needed.  Still for a midfielder to be ranked 1st in total centre clearances, 1st in total inside 50's, 1st in total score involvements, 5th in total goal assists and kick over 30 goals himself in a season some feel was disappointing, well I'd be happy to be disappointed every year.   :)

Agreed.

If this was any other player I'd give them an 8-10.

Because it's Dusty and I know he is a God...part of me rates him at a 6-7/10.

Credit to him for setting the bar so ridiculously high. Fingers crossed 2017 wasn't a one-off and he can do another couple of seasons like that.

But man let me tell you I will be so happy to tell my kids I saw this guy play one day in the future. Bloke will have a highlights reel for the ages...
