Ellis must fight to win back spot in Tigers’ best 22

Richmond defensive coach Justin Leppitsch says Brandon Ellis must fight to win his spot back in the Tigers’ best 22 after Jayden Short’s emergence at Punt Road.

Short emerged as a damaging half back as Ellis was dropped in Round 6 after 111 consecutive games, then missed both finals due to form.

Leppitsch believes there is a slot in the Tigers back six for Ellis but says there is always competitive pressure for spots at Punt Road.

“He is such an important part of our team when he’s up and firing,” he said.

“Jayden Short came into the side and made his position vulnerable and made a bit of competition there and Jayden ended up taking it which left Brandon in limbo.

“So that’s the way teams evolve and it can happen when players push others out.

“He has got a real challenge personally but he is a great team man and it’s a good position to be in when you have a guy like Brandon who didn’t consistently get a game of AFL footy.”
