Stuff me sideways, after last night, I just hope someone teaches him just the tiniest bit of composure. He should make defenders crap themselves when he has the ball or when they have it. At the moment, they way he is going, they most probably breath a sigh of relief when either scenario happens.
On the flip, looks super fit.
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

I expect that he might play a few games at the start of the season, then we will not see him again.

Too many options coming through for Butler to be in the best 22.

And people reckon (myself included) that Bellis is soft. Butler makes him look like the statue of David.

Has been much better at match sims. He will be in the the starting 22 if fit all year. Bookmark it. Extremely important to us. Was a huge reason for our drop off at the end of last year.

His tackling and pressure off the ball remains top notch.

His on the ball work has looked horrendous. Looks scared and indecisive.

It's called The Butler Bounce Away.

Have always said if you merge Georgie and Butler, you get a gun. Though lately Butler's efforts with ball in hand are starting to make me doubt that... :shh But I am sure he will come good once there is more pressure on his spot  :shh :shh

Coming of a major injury people forget his 2017 was all class and has those moments of pure skill.

I know that

1. a lot of people rate him and point to his off the ball work, pressure etc.
2. I just don't like the way he plays and am probably over critical

but still, I can't warm to him being an important part of the team.

I guess I am just a hater, but I really don't see it with Butler. He looks terrified when he gets the ball, or a poor decision making, or something that I just can put my finger on.

Laying a tackle is good, pressure is good. Good on him. Doesn't have anything to do with putting his head over the footy though.

Have always stressed the importance of tackling but it takes nowhere near the amount of courage to lay a tackle as it does to absorb one let alone risk collision in a contest... anyone who's ever played the game should know that... :shh

TBH Y+BBlood, I have never rated tackles as a good measure of whether a player is soft or not.

There are plenty of players who get high tackle numbers who simply sweat on the opposition player winning the ball, then nail him when he gets it. I'd rather see them win the ball in the first place in the contest, or at least be prepared to make the contest when the ball is in dispute.

I don't think Butler does make the contest. As Assange said, it is called the Butler bounce away. He looks like he shies away from contact when the ball needs to be won. Even worse, when he does get to the contest he often looks to me like he is more focussed on the impending possibility of contact rather than the ball itself. A hard player to me goes straight at the footy focussing on that and little else.

Look, I over analyse things. He is a skillful player and the evidence would suggest that the coaches rate him highly and that he does what they ask him to do because quite simply, he keeps getting games. So what I see may well be him playing to instructions. And if that is what the coaches want, I'll back that in. It is kind of hard to argue against a flag.

Agree with most of that. I also think he doesn't want to injure himself in these practice matches as he has just got back from injury. He is only slight too, nothing like the build of Brandon who should be imposing himself physically a lot more with the body and experience he has.

As long as he is putting on tackling pressure and providing goal creating options, he is playing his role. My point is what role is Ellis playing? Nothing at the moment.... :shh

Your point was Butler laying tackles indicates he's not as soft as we think, we disagree. :shh

Correct. I didn't say he wasn't soft - just not as soft as you personally might think he is. He does his job and hence is in the team. Ellis on the other hand is both soft and hasn't been performing his role and is thus in the VFL...... :shh :shh :shh
